Title: Harriet Devereux m William Elton Barnes
Post by: Pheno on Monday 24 February 25 12:38 GMT (UK)
I have two conflicting Ancestry hints but only one image available to check.

The marriage of these two is recorded at St. Mary, Tewkesbury as on 9 April 1837 in England Select Marriages.

In Gloucestershire, England, Church of England Marriages the same marriage is recorded at the same church as 5 July 1840, image available.

As far as I can see their first child Harriet Devereux Barnes was born c. Oct 1840 (1841 census) and baptised at St. Mary on Dec 31st 1840.

I think Harriet Devereux herself was baptised on 3 Apr 1820 as Debarux so she was aged about 17 at the date of the first record.

If the marriage had not gone ahead due to the fact that she was a minor would the record not have been deleted?

Family search appear to have three Parish mariages for the couple
9 April 1837
31 May 1840
5 July 1840

However there is also a GRO Ref as well
Sep 1840 Tewkesbury 11 519

The marriage certificate will confirm the date of the marriage.

Thanks.  The certificate is for the 5 July 1840 which ties in with the Sep qtr gro registration so I think this is the actual date of marriage.

I was really wondering why the other records exist if no marriages actually took place then.

Any theories?

Thanks, Pheno

I did wonder if it was familysearch listing banns as marriages, you never know with some of their datasets.

Guess that could be true of the 31 May 1840 date on family search Rosie but the 1837 date is surely far too early for it to be a banns publication date.

The 1837 could have been the first calling of banns and no more followed as someone objected  :-\

Banns were called 26th March
                                 2nd April and 9 april. In 1837.

In 1840   17  / 24.  / 31 of May.

That's the answer then it appears.

The first date of 9 Apr 1837 is the 3rd calling of banns for a marriage that actually didn't take place, perhaps cos she was a minor.  I suppose this date remains in the register, therefore able to be incorrectly recorded as an actual marriage, because the banns were called even though there was no subsequent marriage.

The second date of 31 May 1840 is the 3rd calling of banns prior to their second go at marriage, which actually took place on 5 July 1840.

Thanks to all for sleuthing,  Pheno
