Title: No sound on laptop
Post by: wilcoxon on Sunday 23 February 25 16:38 GMT (UK)
I have been given an Asus laptop, the previous owner is no longer around sadly.
I have  never had a laptop before so it`s a learning curve.
I can`t get any sound, tried Messenger video call and playing stuff on Facebook etc, even though as far as I can see speakers are on full volume , but no sound. I have tried all the settings that I feel comfortable doing but still no joy.
The microphone works because I tried a Google voice search.
Does anyone have an idea what the problem may be.
Thanks

If the volume control showing on the Taskbar, if it is double click on it to open it up to see what it shows.

Do check if a key combination is required to adjust the volume.

If you have a pair of headphones connect them up and see if there is any sound from them.

If there is still no sound looks in the Settings specifically for Sounds, with an Asus you can have multiple options for the sound system to use, if you see a few work through each.

Assuming this is a device running Windows, what edition of Windows is it on? Has it received the last couple of monthly updates?

I've seen a few reports online of some issues with sound following installation of the January update but that may be a coincidence and unrelated. Unfortunately there was no published fix either.

It's Windows 10, it seems to have been installed 25 January.

Some laptops have a MANUAL switch or volume control. Check the manual
Failing that, update the sound drivers, and reboot.

I had something similar with the micrphone when we started using Zoom during lockdown.  Tried all sorts - thinking back I uninstalled and reinstalled Zoom and mucked about with various settings - it did work with a separate mike and eventually worked as it should.
Thinking on the same lines,  have you tried earbuds / head phones?   Does the laptop have bluetooth - could you utilise that until the speaker problem is solved?

Do you have a speaker symbol showing on the taskbar at all?
[Mine is next to battery condition, and showing with an x]
x signifying sound off!

You might need to change where the sound comes out of, the previous owner may have had it connected via HDMI to TV or monitor etc.
Right click the speaker symbol on the bottom tool bar.
Select 'Sound settings'
Where it says Output choose where to play sound - Click the button that is the laptop name.
Slide the volume bar up to 100.

See if that works. Good luck.

thanks for your patience everyone. I have checked everything I can see but still no luck. I am now wondering if it may be the driver but am not confident enough to try sorting that out myself.
It`s taken me ages just to get the thing set up  ;D

Well I went for it, uninstalled and downloaded Realtek again. according to my laptop everything is working properly. But still no sound. Is there some little thing I am missing, some key I don`t know about, it`s so annoying  :(

See if you can find the original specifications/instructions for your exact model of laptop online. My elderly HP laptop had a diagram showing all the various sockets round the edges (that I don't use) and all the keyboard combinations that substitute for the missing function buttons. It also has a pair of very useful buttons with tiny lights on them at the top  of the keyboard -Wifi on/off and sound on/off. Yours might have something similar?

As far as I can see Wilcoxon has not yet tried plugging in some wired earpieces. If a wire has dropped off the internal speakers then external speakers or headphones will probably still work. Wired earpieces  are given away with practically every phone or similar gadget so Wilcoxon must have some in some draw or such. I've got probably half a dozen I've never used.
Apart from playing back music etc are there no alert beeps or such?

Wilcoxon said the Windows 10 was installed in January.

This previous thread mentions that someone lost their sound after a Windows update. Cured by changing from some Realtec driver to some generic Windows one i think.

Thanks . Every thing sound related is shown as working properly.

After a lot of fiddling and far**ng around I have sound, but only through headphones.
I tried the instructions below but there is no option to change output. It's set up for external speakers.
Its only showing that  one option. I tried disabling it and that didn't work.

Type and search [Sound settings] in the Windows search bar①, and then click [Open]②. In Sound settings, you are able to choose the Output device③ (such as internal speakers, external speakers, or headset) and the Input device④ (such as internal microphone, external microphone, or earphone).

When you were checking the settings did you have the headphones plugged into the laptop. When they are plugged in the option for internal speakers will be disabled automatically.
Or maybe your laptop does not have internal speakers but that would be very odd.

Headphones were not plugged in. Even then there is no other option to choose from,  only  one  showing.
There is a feature to test them and it works.
There are 2 grills under the front of the laptop which I presume are speakers.
I'm struggling to find a manual for this model.

On the 23rd February I asked you to try plugging in a set of headphone.

Only now have you done so but you may be getting somewhere.

Connect up a HDMI cable from your laptop to your TV, with both powered down, turn them both on and see if sound from the laptop is coming out of the TV.  If not, go into settings and then sounds where there should be both laptop speakers and the make of your TV showing in the Output section.  Select TV and try again.

Report back on what you find

Hi, a couple of questions.
Can you advise which model of ASU’s laptop you have? This may enable us to give some more specific advice.
Secondly you say external speakers is the only option shown. Have you got anything plugged in to the laptop? Monitor, TV, any thing at all? It sounds like it thinks you do and is trying to use it.

Nothing at all plugged in.
Will have to check model tomorrow.  I can't attach images to my posts because of RC settings,  it's a long story.

I did try headphones before but they  didn't work,  it's only today that they worked, I have no idea why.
I was going round and round with checking settings etc . What happened I don't know.

Hi,

I too have been looking at the ASUS Web Site.

This seems to be possibly one of these long and painful investigations that have no solution.

Before I get in to suggestions, you comment,

There is a feature to test them and it works.
It is not clear whether you mean the speakers or the headphones, can you clarify?

After much searching I found the R410UA on the ASUS web site.
It seems to be fairly elderly 2019 and the support section only gives Windows 10 drivers, with a fairly elderly V6.xx Realtek Driver.
There seem to be quite a few people having issues over the years with ASUS sound on laptops.
One specifically mentioned when upgrading from Windows 10 to 11.

That being said, ASUS do seem to have a fairly good stepwise diagnostic process on their web site, and a couple of Apps that automate the driver update process and also suggest reaching out to them if this does not work. Have you tried reaching out to them?

If you are not comfortable with diving in to the guts of Windows drivers and the Bios then I would suggest doing as Biggles50 suggests and taking it to a local specialist.
However, it may be a quick fix but this is the kind of investigation I can quite see taking several hours, and may be insoluble.
You don’t seem to be alone with this issue, it could be Microsoft generated.
The fact that you report that it does not report internal speakers suggests something is turned off somewhere, Sicily question, I know, but looking at a picture of the keyboard, have you tried the Fn F10 key to turn the sound off and on? Silly things like this can really work some times.
Finally it is a 7 year old laptop, if you can’t live with using the headphones, that seem to magically work now, perhaps a replacement is required.
Microsoft seems to be very keen on sending older PC’s to the skip at the moment.
Finally, if you know someone who has the skills and you don’t have windows only software, Linux might keep it alive for a bit longer.
Sorry not to have given a magic solution.

My iMac was bought in 2016 and I have no inclination to update it. For most peoples use there has been no significant improvement in desktop computers for 20+ years.
Laptop batteries will eventually degrade but a battery can be replaced or one can just run them on the mains.
If Wilcoxon does not want to use headphones, which can be a nuisance if wired to the computer, then I'm sure an external speaker could be bought for less than £10. I say "speaker" since who needs stereo.

I agree. You might be making things worse by trying the various fixes.  I'm sure you must have a reliable computer repair shop somewhere in the Wrexham area.

It's a pity there is no member on here that is close by and maybe able to help.

I hate to ask, but do you have any family / friends ( especially a youngster  ;D ) that maybe able to help, unless you can find a nice friendly computer repair shop that could look and help for free / very small donation.

This is it, I only wanted a cheap laptop to  try before I decide to get another desktop or not.
As it is it's quite fast and even reads my  very old data stored on DVD'S via an external drive.  🙂 which is good.
I wanted it for research away from home.

Re headphones,  I am totally deaf in one ear so speakers would be good.

I am not very well at the moment so not going to attempt any more myself,  my mind isn't concentrating.
Thanks for your help so far.

Rather than buying mail order, consider a local purchase where at least you can have face to face contact if you have issues.

I had an Asus that served me well from 2008 until the hard drive failed in 2023, when we bought a MacBook.

After having used the MacBook for 18 months we would not buy any other Windows device.

Get well soon and good luck with your purchase.

EDIT
The link to laptopsdirect shows that the laptop is unavailable.  More concerning is that the spec listed Windows 10 rather than Windows 11.  I may be wrong but I always thought that this company deals in obsolete and refurbished models, so do take care in your purchase.

ADVICE.
The Windows 11 Laptop or Desktop (if you go this route), look for at least an Intel i5 Processor and the spec should say the number of cores that it has, and for each core 2Gb of RAM is suggested.  Onboard storage should be at least 512Gb and it is best if it has a full HD resolution screen, that is 1920 x 1080 pixels (1920x1200 would be better).

You are very welcome
I only called the laptop elderly due to Microsoft’s crusade to retire anything OBE a few years old.
It does seem a reasonable spec machine.
I understand entirely, problems like this can be frustrating and confusing at the best of times, I am dealing with something not dissimilar with a brand new PC, Microsoft seem to have broken something!
As Gadget says if you are in the Wrexham area there seem to be a couple of possibilities that may be worth trying. It is always possible it is a quick fix for someone who is doing this daily.
I hope you feel better soon.

Hi. After getting someone to look at it , it seems that the previous owner had a problem and tried to take the back off.

A nice pair of mini external speakers plugged into the headphone jack has done the job, the sound is pretty good as well.
A lot less expensive than a repair job which would probably cost more than the laptop did.

And now for my next problem... watch this space if I can't work it out for myself.😉😁
