Title: John Curran
Post by: KylaH26 on Saturday 22 February 25 16:32 GMT (UK)
Hi, I’m just wondering if anyone could help.

Im trying to find out more about John Curran. He died in 1885 in Mullaghglass. He was married to Mary Regan (unsure what year), who he had multiple children with, including Michael Curran.
Michael Curran was born in 1868 in Mullaghglass and came to Scotland where he married Margaret Ferns in 1890. He died in 1939. Mary Regan was listed as his mother on his birth and death certificate but on his marriage Bridget Clarkin was registered as his mother. I’ve tried to find out who she is but had no luck, so just wondering if anyone can help with who she was and who John Currans parents were.

Thanks

It helps if we can see the records. Are these what you have?

Michael Curran’s birth - 1868 - mother Mary Fegan

Here is a birth for Ann in 1864 so highly likely the couple were married before then. If they were Catholic, civil records for marriage did not begin until 1864.
Was the Regan surname an error? It reads Fegan on this record too.

Hi,

Yes, I think the Regan surname was an error and yes, they were Catholic.

This looks like Mary’s death - informant daughter, Mary
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1900/05775/4632870.pdf

And 1901 census

Are you certain you have the right record where it shows Bridget Clarkin?

Yes, it’s definitely the right record.

I wonder if it was an error of transcription or something.
Is there a church record of the marriage to compare?

KylaH,
Just trying to think of explanation - error as said before.
Who were the witnesses?
Does the record show Margaret Fern’s mother?

Re the Bridget Clarkin mentioned I have found a record for a Michael Curran born Ireland 1856 but  dying in Massachusetts and his mother is described as Mary Clearkin and father Owen Curran.

OP are you able to advise the reference to the marriage or a copy of the relevant portion so we can look at the entry please?

Who knows if this family is related in any way to the Michael Curran you are searching for.

The transcript is on Find my Past, St Ignatius, Wishaw, but sadly no mothers’ names included.
I am so disappointed!

We believe that the marriage took place in the Roman Catholic Church that was in park street, Motherwell.

It’s a pleasure. You can click to get the original record page too.
It does seem as though there is no explanation for the name.
You would think that the marriage information would be true as Michael would have given it.

However, if the death is the same person who married Margaret Fearns/Ferns/Ferin, and this can be traced to a birth it complicates matters and at the moment, no explanation.

Just a point that the marriage took place in 1891 not 1890, on 24/9/1891 according to the marriage found by heywood.  I just think we have done some thing really basic like confuse people with the same name.....perhaps the marriage records that I found of a Michael Curran dying in the US in 1921 born 1856 should be looked at to make sure there is no crossover.
