Title: Trying to find my grandmother
Post by: RobinHighbury on Thursday 20 February 25 12:45 GMT (UK)
Hello,
I am not that experienced with researching my Irish roots and would appreciate any help. My main issue is finding the correct grandmother! Her name was Ellen Connolly (perhaps Ellen L Connolly) and she was born in 1880. A couple of family trees I have located on Ancestry say she was born in Monaghan, but I have not been able to confirm this. My mother told me she was born on 12 March 1880, but I have not been able to find any Ellen Connolly born on that date in Monaghan on irishgenealogy.ie. She moved to London, and her birthdate is confirmed on various censuses, and she died in 1955. She had seven children but never married, using her partner John Tavener's surname.
This may be mission impossible, but any tips or clues would be greatly appreciated.

The surname is frequently misspelt, but correct spelling is Tavener

Do you have Ellen in 1911 and 1921? Does she just give Ireland as birthplace there?

I have just checked and strangely it has Nelly at the top for me.  I am glad it is giving the full household for others.  :)

Electoral registers showed John Thomas Tavener with Ellen until 1929. It would seem he died 1943.
I believe he set up home with Edith** and they appear together in 1939(dob as 4.9.1875)as just John & Edith.

They appear at the 1939 address in 1937 @ 103 New Cavendish Street as John Thomas Tavener and Edith

1936 they appear as John Thomas & Edith @ 43 Upper Marylebone Street

1932 John Thomas Tavener & Edith @ 101 Euston Street, St Pancras

1930 John Thomas Tavener & Edith @ 8, Wellington Street, St Pancras.

Thanks so much for all that! I will go over all these interesting leads first thing.

Buxton Buildings is definitely correct (I remember my mother mentioning that address).

According to my DNA result on Ancestry (25% Irish), I should have family in Galway/Connemara – so I'm wondering if I can find an actual family link there.

Many thanks again!

1911 as Nelly Connolly age 31 gives place of birth as Bromton, St Pancras

Ellen Louisa Connelly appears twice in 1911, 1 as above, and 2 as below.

The 3 siblings with her all have mmn Cummins/Cummings.

Youngest sibling Mary Catherine married Thomas J Opher 1913. Appears with him/children and her mother in 1921.

Father William Henry Connelly died 1903 aged 52 confirming a dob as 1850/51.

Having looked at the census for 1911 and 1921, I don't think she's in either one. The relatives are not those of my grandmother, I'm pretty certain.

Don't think so. Her daughter, Mary Katherine, was born in 1909 in Holborn.

We are talking about the sister Mary Catherine of Ellen louisa, not a daughter of Ellen Louisa.

Sorry, her daughter was Mary Katherine. Concerning Ellen, I understand that names are not always correct, but she is most often down as Ellen Louise Tavener (originally Connolly). So, I wonder if Ellen Louisa Connelly is the same?
