Most of my lineage is in Liverpool and one particular line has taken me to Penrith. I am looking for any records that may exist of a Charles Coburn born around 1781 in Penrith (later Census information confirms this.)
By 1810 he appears to have married a Sarah Margaret Leavis (?) I don't know where he marries but children appear from 1810 in Liverpool (Charles Edward Coburn being the 1st) I have no baptism records for the subsequent children but the records I have show they go on to marry in Church of England churches in Liverpool. One Child Charles and Sarah have continues the Leavis name (Richard Leavis Coburne - note the added e born 1816.) Their last Child is called Mary Watson Cowburn (another spelling!) I wondered if the Watson - like Leavis, may have been a nod to a family name, but I've hit a brick wall with this.
Charles is listed through Census / family events as a Sawyer, Shipwright and is last noted on the 1851 Census as still living in Liverpool. On 18th Sept 1859 he passes away at 2 Carter Lane, Whitehaven and is buried at the Cemetery there. His wife dies on 24 Sep 1863 at 12 Senhouse St, Whitehaven.
I am wondering where, for those with better knowledge than myself, I could perhaps look for any baptism details for Charles or indeed any other family members that may have existed. Any thoughts or views welcomed. Charles and Sarah's children seem to retain a Cumbria connection - their daughter Sarah Jane marries a Master Mariner James Young in Liverpool. They then live our their days in Harrington and then Tangier St and Penzance St Whitehaven.

According to 1851 census Sarah was born in Devon :-\
1861 she is listed as Sarah Cohane age 64 born Dartmouth, Devon.

Don't look at this site much, but noticed this post. Charles was born Charles Cockbane at Thackthwaite, and baptized at Watermillock 1 Jul 1781. When these Cockbanes (Cockbains) moved into Penrith, their name was altered to Cockburn.
David Hall has been researching this family for decades, and has been trying to find volunteers to take part in a Cockburn DNA study.
