And

There is an interesting “story” on DigitalNZ.  You have probably already seen.  I hadn’t realised people had to reapply every year.

Hi lnr

Following on from what mckh489 has suggested, if you type "old age pensions" into Archive New Zealand's search bar, you'll get 606 results -- giving various types of related records,  NZ locations and dates.
You'll probably need to have an idea of where the person lived (area), and an approximate year of when they would have been making such an application.

Hi again lnr

Can you clarify please if you are only wanting a pension record, in order to find a birth date ??

Are you able to give us any other information on the person / birth date you are seeking  ??
It maybe that there is an easier route for locating such info that we can assist you with ???

after reading the article on the old age pension) makes me wonder wether he would have been able to get it if he didnt have a birth cert. Maybe some births & marriages are missing for Yarmouth. Marriage says birth Yarmouth Norfolk. Father William JOHNSON(labourer) mother Eliza WHITE.Elevin  children have not got all births too expensive  1st child charlotte Anne may 5th 1892 west Eyreton George johnson aged 22 father born Yarmouth Norfolk Mary Anne Johnson ( mother). 2nd child Dinah Elizabeth b.June 11th 1893 F. George Johnson age 22 Yarmouth Norfolk Mary Anne Johnson (mother) West Eyreton (present)Georges death 1949 17th August chch general lab. Father William JOHNSON Mother Eliza nee WHITE born Yarmouth Norfolk in country 62 years marrried at age 21. cant find him on any census either in Norfolk as any that have been posibble i have back tracked their family histories as much as possible and discounted them Thanks Lnr
