Title: Mary Brown
Post by: Familysearch on Tuesday 18 February 25 18:49 GMT (UK)
Sorry, it;s such  a common name, but I've lost Mary Brown.

Mary Brown b Keighley. Yorkshire 1866. One of six children born to Anthony Thomas and Sarah Brown. The family were in Halifax by 1870.

Everyone else is accounted for, including Anthony's second wife and their daughter.

Can you help me find Mary, please?

Many thanks.

Not shown as stepmother - Ann is shown as a widow & children shown as her sons & daughters.

No details in your post re name of Anthony's second wife or when they married - or when Anthony died

That is the family.

As I'm only looking for Mary I didn't think it relevant to post details of the whole family.

I have all the others followed through to their deaths - except Mary.

You mentioned that ‘the family were in Halifax by 1870’ and then the ‘second wife and daughter’.
You didn’t give any further details re the family to help research.
That is why I asked if that was the family in 1881 as neither of the parents’ names matched in that census. We now know they were both deceased.
Have you checked any possible deaths or marriages between 1881 and 1891.

Thank you. I guess because I know the family it all seemed straight forward to me.

Here is the reference to the 1871 census: WRYRG10 4392 4395 0567

Sarah died in 1875, Anthony in 1880.

Eliza is the daughter of Anthony and Ann - so a half sister to the others.

I have checked marriages and deaths up to 1891, but of course may have missed something.

It does look like it is possibly Lily who is with them in 1891 who dies in 1892.

Husband Fred Bates Hanson dies in 1894 age 26  :-\

There is also a death in Dec qtr 1899 for a Mary Hanson age 34 which needs further investigation

Just to add that I couldn't find Mary in 1901, nor a likely marriage.
Perhaps that death is her. All very sad for the young family.

Thanks Jon.
It may be better to try that marriage. Of course it may not be her but perhaps worth a try.

Thanks for that link. It could be useful for the Brighouse part of my tree.

I've struggled with the Family Search website since they changed it years ago ( and despite my sign on name for this site!!)

She is the only one of Anthony Thomas Brown's family photo that I have not been able to trace.

Thank you for your help with this one.  I'm working through it and trying to decide which certificate will be most helpful - having had one nonmatch I can't afford too many of those.

Can't find Arthur or May on the 1939. Where am I going wrong with my searches? I'm using Ancestry.
Title: Re: Mary Brown
Post by: jonwarrn on Tuesday 25 February 25 19:24 GMT (UK)
Hi
From May's birth registration it looks likely that the Mary Hanson who married Arthur Wardle was a widow, nee Brown.
But I guess you need one of the marriages to be sure it is the daughter of Anthony Thomas. Which one would be best? I don't know.
It's not something you have to rush into though.

Free index to 1939 on findmypast has
Arthur Wardle, born 1878
May Wardle, born 1902
Living at 11 Savile Parade, Halifax C.B.

I think on ancestry they are transcribed as Warale.

It's good news!

The marriage certificate arrived this morning.

Arthur Wardle and Mary Hanson were married on 30 June 1900.

She is described as a widow (Deceased husband's name not given). Daughter of Anthony Thomas Brown (deceased).

Thank you for help in tracing this through.
