Hi all, wonder if you can help. I'm looking for help finding more details about a James Jory, my second great grandfather. Here is the timeline as I have it, showing where there are gaps:
- Birth around 1850, potentially Cornwall
- No findable census records, 1851-1881
- Married Harriet Wilson (born 1851 locally) in the last quarter of 1885
- Harriet gave birth to John James Jory (my great grandfather) in Pontyberem, 1886
- 1891 Wales census, Harriet Jory appears in the same household as her parents, John and Eliza Wilson, with John James (aged 4) and a second child, Richard Henry Jory, aged 1. No record of James Jory.
- Harriet dies in 1896
- 1901 Wales census - John James and Richard Henry appear to be cared for by Sarah Wilson, Harriet's sister
- 1911 Wales census - a James Jory reappears, now married to Elizabeth, as a Grocer in Carmarthen
- 1921 Wales census - same household appears
- 1926 James Jory dies, with the below obituary appearing in the Welshman. Note that John James Jory was living in London at this point...also he was known as Jack Jory by this point, so the Jack Jory listed there may be incorrect.
My confusion is this - is the James Jory, Carmarthen Grocer, the same James Jory that is in my family, and whether he is or not, where are his census records?
-
Cornwall-OPC-database is showing 8 hits for James Jory, 1850 +/- 5 years.
-
What was his father's name, from Marriage Certificate?
-
1911 census for James & Elizabeth has a servant Mildred Minnie Jory, possible niece to James.
1901 this looks very much like the daughter of John & Claudia Jory living Llantrisant, Glamorgan.
Very likely brothers
1851 Newlyn, Cornwall
Richard Jory 19 Head
Mary Jane Jory 21 Wife
John Jory 2 Son
James Jory 8 Mo Son
Possible death of John in 1907 - https://newspapers.library.wales/view/4173644/4173646/35/John%2BOR%2BJory
I think the marriage to Harriet is needed to confirm if a father is named for James. From 1901 with Elizabeth it looks likely this James was the one born Newlyn, Cornwall.
Added - looks likely the Mrs Pearce, sister in the obit is Bessie/Elizabeth Jory b c1862 to same parents. Let me know if you need details of first marriage.

1901 census as Jary, James a lead miner. Elizabeth's age would appear to be incorrect as she has 2 more children after this census.

administration of the affairs of Richard Jory, miner, of Newlyn East, was granted to James Jory, miner, in 1894
Added: clear from 1871 and 1881 that the Jory family were lead miners. James still at home in 1871

1871 census in Newlyn, James appears as Jones?
