Title: Martha DAMYON 1870-??
Post by: Eyesee on Sunday 16 February 25 20:55 GMT (UK)
Martha DAMYON arrived in Melbourne in 1886 on the City of Agra, along with her mother Jessie and sister Sophia. Two brothers Henry and George DAMYON also arrived in Melbourne before 1889.

Sophia married Alfred Ernest BEDGGOOD in 1890. They had two children and at some time before 1914 moved to Auckland in New Zealand.

Jessie the mother I believe died in Prahran in 1898, at the residence of her daughter. Found a death notice on Trove but not a death reg. Have not been able to find out which daughter.

There is a Martha DAMYON marriage to a Charles ROOK in New Zealand in 1893, but they can't be found in NZ after that date. Did she return to Victoria?

Hoping some fresh eyes can assist in finding Martha, and a death reg for Jessie. Her maiden name was HUTCHINS.

Thanks
Ian C

Some records have Charles ROOK as Charles ROOTS

In 'The Prahran Telegraph' on 24 Dec 1898, G.F. Thurgood was advertising his News Agency at 196 Chapel St, Prahran.  It was previously owned by E. Davis.  Did he possibly live upstairs too?

I can't find the 1898 death reg either!

EDIT:  Seems George Frederick Thurgood married Ethel Bloomfield Martin in 1902.

EDIT:  Just found Jessie's death registered under JARVIC, Jessie 1898 (13655) at Prahran aged 59.

Charles, the son of Martha and Charles Roots.  His 1898 birth was registered in Prahran in 1898, it could well be her residence that Jessie passed at that same year.

Following Sophia Bedggood and her husband Ernest, both their chn were born in Melbourne 1892 and 1894. Both listed 1909 Electoral roll NZ Bay of Islands: Sophia died 1947 Auckland, Ernest died 1941 Auckland.
Nothing about them on Papers Past NZ and this doesn't prove they weren't in Melbourne when Jessie died unfortunately.

Re Martha and Charles Roots.  Have you read the WWI record for their son Charles Ernest Damyon Roots?  It does give some info regarding his NOK.

I also cannot find a marriage for Martha and Charles.

Thanks bitzar.

Charles and Martha were married in NZ in 1893. The NZBDM website has Martha DAMYON and Charles ROOK. The Intention to Marry has Martha DAMYON and Charles ROOTS.

Thanks for the info about the son. Looks like Charles and Martha died before 1916.

Not sure how they get JARVIC from DAMYON, probably poor writing.

Interesting to know when and where he got his Tattoo.  These bits and pieces make it so much more real than just words on a screen.

FYI
The rates books for Victoria show in 1891

Jessie DAMYON D D (domestice duties) with Henry DAMYON a bricklayer (is this the son?) at Crimea Street St Kilda.

Not far from Prahran and Windsor

Thanks sparrett.

Yes that is one of the sons, the one that returned to England. The other son George stayed and moved to NSW.

If you do not have this information, it may interest you.

There was a good deal in the papers about the divorce of George, the other son of Jessie and his alleged drunkard wife

This item states Ellen Mary DAYMON is the sister in law of said drunkard wife.

An example of the many reports on the divorce.

George’s marriage.

DAMYON Geo
LONG, Ellen

Noting. Chapel street spans the 2 suburbs Windsor and Prahran and are occasionally  mixed up.
