Title: MyHeritage ethnicity estimates
Post by: hdw on Friday 14 February 25 19:34 GMT (UK)
There doesn't seem to have been much discussion about MyHeritage's new ethnicity estimates. Until a few days ago this was my breakdown -

N.&W. Europe                  84.4%

Irish, Scottish and Welsh                              60.2%
Scandinavian                   19.3%
Finnish                       4.9%

South Europe                    8.9%

Iberian                   6.8%
Italian                     2.1%

East Europe                  4.7%

Baltic                     4.7%

Africa                     2%

West Africa                  1%

Nigeria                     1%

North Africa                  1%
(not specified)

This has changed overnight to

Scottish and Welsh   43.5%

English   22.7%

Irish   13%

Breton   11.3%

Dutch   6.8%

French  2.7%

Yes, I know, we have to take all these things with a large pinch of salt, and MyHeritage aren't very well regarded, but they must be getting these results from somewhere. The only improvement on the previous estimate is that they are finally taking account of my Northumberland ancestors by giving me some English ancestry (I'm a Scot on both sides), but Breton? Dutch? French? And the only Irish ancestors I know of were what the Americans call "Scotch-Irish", Ulster Presbyterians originally from the west of Scotland I imagine. And where have my Vikings gone? I've had lots of matches and have corresponded with Scandinavians and Brits and Americans with Scandinavian ancestry who are a match for me.
Mind you, in the past I've allegedly had Siberian ancestry and Sephardic Jewish ancestry, both of which quietly disappeared. No doubt the present estimate will be revised again.

Well, I've lost my Germany ancestry completely which is more than a bit surprising as my maternal grandmother was 100% German (as were her parents, grandparents. etc.) and my maternal grandfather was merely 50% German.

I;ve just had an e-mail from them giving me my latest ethnicity - despite not a member since last year.

It seems slightly better that previously but where did the Breton come from  ??? and I'm more English than my tree shows!

I'll take it all with a pinch of salt as usual

MyHeritage & ethnicity estimates are words which should never appear in the same place at the same time.

As long as we don't take them (including Ancestry) seriously. Glen  ;D

Like I always say, it doesn't identify a missing ancestor, at best it gives a clue to where they (and thousands of others), had a link at some point back in time.

I think they should re-name that feature Geographical Blunders.  ;D

I think they should re-name that feature Geographical Blunders.  ;D

You may have inadvertently identified one of my actual ancestors by name there  ;D

It makes a lot more sense than the old estimates. I think Breton and Dutch basically represent the ancient components of most Briton's ancestry - i.e. Bretons originally (in part) came from Britain, and Dutch are very similar to our Frisian ancestors, and probably also very close to Anglo-Saxons and Jutes. Many Britains will also have not some more recent some more distant ancestry from France, but also French particularly northern French DNA will be very similar to English, particularly southern English DNA due to a very similar mixing of peoples over time.

Yes, I’ve suddenly got Breton and Dutch too in the latest MH update!

Rather curiously, my daughter now has 2% South Asian, but I wonder if this just represents the small amount of Ashkenazi Jewish DNA that I have? Living DNA says that I have a small amount of Arabian DNA, but I think it must be the same thing.

I too have acquired Breton and Dutch, losing my Greek/Italian, which made no sense but  I would have liked  as my mother looked 'Southern' and we both adored anything Italian  ;D My Heritage results, both previous and updated bear little resemblance to Ancestry's, which I also question. And out them all I'm still missing a vital one: my Canadian connection.

Another thing I don't understand: what exactly do they mean by 'English'? Would that be our Ancient British ancestors?

I actually do have Dutch ancestors but Breton? no. The Spanish & Northern Italian bits don't make any sense either.
