Irvine Blakely Johnston was born Feb 7, 1876 in Johnstone, Renfrewshire, Scotland to Irvine Johnston and Jane Henderson. He had a brother John Caldwell Johnston born Jan 23, 1865,
Irvine is on the 1891 census in Scotland with his father and his father's second wife Annie Robertson.
I am pretty sure, Irvine is living in Yonkers, New York, in 1905 with his wife Jane Monaghan and his son John born in USA in 1904.
https://www.rootschat.com/links/01tnf/
I don't find Irvine and Jane again but in 1910, I found John C. Johnston living in Yonkers, with his wife Mary nee Barbour, their 3 children, and a nephew John C., born 1904 in New York. I think this is Irvine's son but what happened to Irvine and his wife Jane Monaghan? Jane was born 1877 in Wigtownshire, Scotland to John Monaghan and Jane Mitchelson Goldie.
Jane's father John lived until Mar 9, 1921 as per online tree but not sure where he died. He had been a police constable in Scotland.

I would say that is the correct Monaghan family in 1881 in Scotland. So they were in Yonkers, New York by 1905, and Irvine Johnston was living with them, having married their daughter Jane. The 1905 census says Irvine had been in the USA for nine years.
That is the only time that I found Irvine and/or the Monaghan family in the USA. There was an online tree that said John Monaghan had died in 1921 but it did not say where and did not have a source of information so may not be correct. I was guessing it would be in the USA.
John Monaghan‘s mother‘s maiden name was Janet McNeill, his father Henry. He was a police constable when he married Jane Goldie in 1877 in Scotland. He was a carpenter in 1905 and had been in the USA for 22 years. He was born 1853 in Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland.
This morning, I found a JohnMonaghan, carpenter, in the US city directory in 1908 10 Palisade Ave., Yonkers.
Just now, I think I found John and his wife Jane living in Norwalk Fairfield, Connecticut with their daughter Jeanette, born New Jersey, who had married Michael Delaney. Mother Jane had had five children, three living. Two of them would be this Jeanette and their son Robert, who is on an online tree as living until December 14, 1954. Mother Jane reportedly lived until July 27, 1930 doesn’t say where.
But what happened to their daughter Jane and her husband Irvine Johnston,? Could they have died in Yonkers before 1910?
-
It was the 1910 census for Fairfield, Connecticut, where I found John and Jane Monaghan living with their daughter Janette Delaney.

Hi Sandra. Thank you. I am thinking that Jane Monaghan is the mother who was admitted to Almshouse in 1910. If it was the daughter, it would be JaneJohnston. Would the Almshouse be for the poor or the ill?
Also, it is the mother in 1915.
I am very glad to have the obituary for Mrs. John C Johnstone, as I am sure this is the sister-in-law of Irvine Johnston. Too bad it doesn’t mention Irvine or the nephew John who was living with them in 1910 that I think was Irvine’s son. It does say that her husband John Caldwell Johnston is still alive in 1915. John was born in 1865 in Scotland.

and 1930 as well. https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:X4GH-1XJ?lang=en
This could be her on the death index from 1930, as it was after the census date - https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QG66-VNPY?lang=en They transcribed it as a Mount Pleasant in another county, but that could have just been a guess.
-
Thank you very much shellyesq. I do believe you have found the mother Jane N.’s death in 1930. That is great! Now, if she has an obituary, we might find out about her living children at that time.

Thank you, Sandra for all these marvellous Obituaries. They are the right family although I will have to check the one on John C. Johnstone in 1938. The one I am following is John Caldwell Johnstone but there was also a John Cochran Johnston, and I think they both lived in Yonkers at one time.

-
I have found many, many John C. Johnstons and haven't sorted this one out yet but my best guess is that this is not the one I am looking for. His wife and all his children lived and died in Yonkers, except for Isabella, so I can't see why John Caldwell Johnston would go to New Jersey.
-
The couple married in New Jersey so there was a small link to New Jersey.
Have you checked with Oakland Cemetery to see if John Caldwell Johnstone was buried with his wife Mary ?
John C Johnson married Mary Barbour - 2 October 1888 Paterson Passiac New Jersey.

You’re absolutely right about the marriage. I will follow up on Monday with the cemetery.

-
When Mrs. John C Johnstone a.k.a. Mary Barbour died in August 1915, she mentioned a sister Mrs. Robert Bair. I believe this is her sister Isabella married to Robert Miller Barr. If she has an obituary, it might mention her brother-in-law, John C Johnstone, and/or her nephew, also John C. Johnstone, believed possible son of Irvine Johnstone.
The parents of Isabella and Mary are David Barbour and Isabella Sloan, who both died in Scotland, David Feb 22, 1909 in Johnstone, Renfrewshire, Scotland and Isabella July 17, 1911 in Johnstone.
-
Isabella Barr died 1944 so not likely to mention John Caldwell Johnstone.
-

Reading Sandra's info about Robert H. Monaghan who died 1954. He does not mention his sister Jane who would have married Irvine Johnston/e.
I have found Mrs. John C. Johnstone aka Mary Barbour's brother William Barbour born Apr 1, 1861 in Lochwinnoch, Renfrewshire, Scotland, same as Mary, living with their sister Isabella Barr in Yonkers in 1930. He had emigrated after his wife Margaret Blackadder died. I don't know when William died. Parents David Barbour and Isabella Sloan.

Sandra, You have found such a wonderful amount of correct information verifying what I have been finding in various trees, once I found the correct parents for Mary Barbour. But you have found more than in any of the trees.
I will call Oakland cemetery tomorrow to see if John might be buried with Mary. Sometimes they are there even if not mentioned online. Thank you for your help.
Peggy
-
I have tried several times to phone Oakland Cemetery in Yonkers, but the phone number online seems to be incorrect. I did send them an online message on Saturday and another one today inquiring about Mary, her husband John, his brother Irvine, and Irvine‘s wife Jane alone with Irvine’s son John.
Today may be a holiday in New York, same as here.
Peggy
-
Success! At least some. This morning, I received a reply to my enquiry to Oakland Cemetery, after which I phoned them with further questions, although they had limited information.
First of all, this is what they have regarding Mary's burial in 1915. Looks like you were right, Sandra, and you did find the correct John Johnstone in 1938! Thank you.
8D Mabel Plot John Johnstone
Johnston, Jennie McKay buried Oct 25, 1922 (I don't know who she is, unless George's wife)
Johnstone, John buried Oct 29, 1938
Johnstone, Mary Barbour buried Aug 21, 1915
Johnston, George buried Dec 8, 1956 (John did have a brother George born Nov 13, 1870 in
Scotland)
In the Ashburton Plot, Row A, Block E, Grave#5
Irvine Johnston, date of death, Jan 20, 1916, date of burial Jan 22, 1916, age 37, born Scotland. John's brother Irvine was born Feb 7, 1876 in Scotland so would be age 39 but this MIGHT be him, although there were many Irvine Johnstons, some others also in Yonkers.
They also had a Janet Fish Johnston who died Feb 16, 1917, buried Feb 18, 1917, age 62, born Scotland, last residence Yonkers, lot owner Eliza F. J. Wilson.
I am confident that John C. Johnstone, did die in 1938 and that is him buried with Mary Barbour. As for George, maybe it is his brother who was still alive in Scotland in 1891, single, and was a gas fitter.
I am thinking it is possible Irvine who died 1916 could be John's brother but needs further investigation. If him, where was he in 1910? And where was his wife Jane?

Fantastic! So this is John’s brother George. John‘s daughter Isabella Sloan Johnston married James Harmon Cruikshank about 1916 and James might then be a relative.

Oh boy, I was trying to figure that one out. Mary’s sister Euphemia Barbour married firstly Robert James Lamont, and then James Wilson. So her aunt was Janet Fish Johnston who died 1917. Gotta think about that one some more.
That was quite the marriage between Irving Blakely Johnston and Lillian Jane Colby in 1913. I will try to figure out some of the guests. The guest list did help me determine if George Johnston had daughters Jessie and Jeanette or were Jessie and Jeanette the same person. Since they are both listed, they are different persons.
-
Upon checking, Euphemia Lamont nee Barbour did not marry James Wilson until 1925. Janet Fish Johnston died in 1917. So was James Wilson married before or is this a different James Wilson?

I have now found Janet F. Johnston, age 60, in 1915 at Upland with her aunt Eliza F. J. Wilson, age 40, born in USA (so not Euphemia). https://www.rootschat.com/links/01tnn/
This makes sense since the owner of the plot where Janet was buried was Eliza F.J.Wilson.
In 1915, Eliza's brother was George J. Logan, age 38, born in USA. So Eliza was nee Logan.
In 1905, Eliza's husband was James Wilson, age 33, bricklayer, born 1872 in Scotland. Children Elizabeth, James, Janette. https://www.rootschat.com/links/01tno/
In 1900, James and Eliza spelled Elias have been married 5 years and she was born in New Jersey Aug 1874, living next door to Elizabeth Logan born Scotland 1856, age 26 when married.
https://www.rootschat.com/links/01tnp/
-
James Wilson is on the 1905 census in Yonkers but not in 1910 when Eliza is a widow. So he died between 1905 and 1910.
https://www.rootschat.com/links/01tnq/
An obituary might give a clue as to how he is related to Janet Fish Johnston, more precisely than just his aunt. Also whether he is related to John Caldwell Johnston.
I did find a Jene Johnston in 1910 in Manhattan, age 44, born Scotland, married to James Johnston, age 47, carpenter. Married 7 years, came to USA in 1907. Don't know if it is Janet Fish Johnston but the age is about right.
https://www.rootschat.com/links/01tnq/
-
It is looking like Elizabeth Logan who married James Wilson was born Aug 17, 1873 in Montclair Township, Essex County, New Jersey to parents George Logan and Elizabeth Johnston. That could explain why John Caldwell Johnston died in Montclair in 1938.
On the 1880 census, in Westchester, New York, we have George Logan, age 29, wife Elizabeth 29,and daughter Elizabeth 6 (would later marry James Wilson) with sister-in-law Jeanette Johnston who is single, age 34, so age is not correct to be Janet Fish Johnston who was born abt 1865.

You have found some amazing information, Sandra. It will give me a lot to work on.
So William Johnston’s father would be a sibling to Elizabeth Johnston who married George Logan. So if we can find the death of William or Elizabeth Logan, we may find out their parents.
I found William and Annie in 1915 in Yonkers but in 1925 their children George and Jane are living with a cousin Jeannet Smith married to John Booth Smith. This mean that William and Annie died between 1915 and 1925.
Elizabeth Logan nee Johnston was alive in Yonkers in 1900 next door to James Wilson and her daughter Elizabeth.Elizabeth Logan nee Johnston was born Oct 1856.Her husband George Logan died 1880-1900.
-
Elizabeth Logan nee Johnston is still alive in 1910, widow, living with her daughter, Elizabeth Wilson, widow. Janette Johnson , single, is living with them, aunt to Eliza Wilson, transcribed as age 37 but I am thinking it should be 57 if she died in 1917 at age 62.

I phoned Oakland Cemetery again and Elizabeth Johnstone Logan was buried August 22, 1913. Maybe we can find out her parents.
Eliza F Wilson was buried April 12, 1952, her husband, James Wilson buried December 10, 1909.
They have a George J Logan buried September 3, 1930 age 53 so he must be the son of Eliza Logan nee Johnstone, not the husband. George was later moved in 1939 to lot 45 Terrace plot.
There is a Daniel F Logan buried October 16, 1912. Also a Daniel SBC Logan buried December 11, 1909 on the same date as Nora Logan December 11, 1909. There is a Nora H Logan, July 1, 1961.

Thank you, Sandra for these absolutely amazing and information filled articles. That Irvine name certainly went down through the ages. The first time I found Irvine was John Caldwell Johnston’s maternal great grandfather Irvine Bleakley/Blackley in Ireland although the family found their way to Scotland and then many of them in the John Caldwell Johnston and his siblings family made their way to Yonkers and New Jersey. Many of them did very well for themselves financially as shown by these articles.
I still haven’t figured out the connection of Elizabeth Logan nee Johnston in New Jersey to John Caldwell Johnston, but I am sure it is there. She did find her way to Yonkers as well where she died August 22, 1913.
I think I will phone Oakland again to see who is buried with Irvine Johnston, who died in 1917 as I think that death is possibly John Caldwell Johnston’s brother though there were other Irvine Johnstons about.
I can’t thank you enough for all the help you have given me, Sandra.
Oh, I see you have now found the deaths of William and his wife Annie. You are incredible. I will now see if I can find out the names of his parents which may break everything open.

Is this possibly Elizabeth Logan nee Johnston in 1875 age 27 so born about 1848? Next door to George Johnston age 67 and Jennie age 60, who might be her parents.
https://www.rootschat.com/links/01tnw/
However, this is George in 1860, age 52, clerk, Jane D, 49, looking like Eliza born 1838.

I phoned Oakland Cemetery again today and I missed their opening times by five minutes so I left them a message. I was enquiring about the death of Irvine B.Johnston, who died January 22, 1916. He is not John Caldwell Johnston’s son, but might be his brother who was married to Jane Monaghan.

sorry, in 1841, in Gorbals, Lanarkshire, it has the same children in the same birth order as in 1860 in New York for George Johnston and Jane “Doin”. William B is 4, Elizabeth F is 3, Hellen is 2, and Jane is 4 months. Could that be Elizabeth Fish?

Sandra, you continue to do a marvellous job of tracking family members and finding Obituaries or death notices for them. Thank you so very much. You have helped immensely in building the Family Tree.
I phoned Oakland Cemetery again this morning with regard to the burial of Irvine B Johnston, on January 22, 1916 and it appears he is not buried with any relatives so it is hard to prove who he is. Thinking he is John Caldwell Johnston’s brother.
When I found George Johnston, in Gorbals, Lanarkshire in 1841 and I am positive it is the same George Johnston as in Brooklyn in 1860 due to ages and names of children in the same birth order, there is a column that says he’s not from the county but it doesn’t say where he’s from, whether it be somewhere else in Scotland or Ireland.
However, I did find a marriage of a George Johnston to a Jeanie Orr in 1835 which says he is from the Parish Of Govan and Jeannie is of this parish which I think is Ardrossan because that’s what it is typed at the top of the page where the record is. That marriage date would fit perfectly with the birth of William About 1837. However I was unable to find a record for any of their children born in Scotland, which would include William, Eliza, Ellen, and Jane.
I do wonder why, in 1860, there is a Jane age 21, and a Jane age 2 so born 1858. Could she be the Jeanette who died in 1917, age 62, so born abt 1855.

Was she not Jeanette - the aunt ? Her age was 20 years out on the 1910 census if I remember right

Getting back to Janet F Johnston- her name was Janet Fish Johnston, age 62 when she died in 1917. She was an aunt to Eliza Wilson. In 1915, she was Jannet F. Jonston, age 60, born Scotland, in USA 40 years, and Eliza FJ Wilson was her aunt.
Jane/Jean/Janet/Jeanette all seem interchangeable on Scottish censuses so just wondered. However, if she was born in Scotland, she can’t be Jane E on the 1860 census age 2, born USA, but how reliable is her age in 1915?
I thought I found her on another census , but can’t bring it to mind at the moment.
Thanks for the additional info on Jessie Johnston, Jeanette, and George. Fantastic.
Yes, Jeanette was only married about eight months.
-
Should have written this down yesterday when I went thru the Jane, Jeannie, Jeanette etc.,

Uplands Place. Yonkers Ward 06, Westchester
Eliza Wilson 35 Head
Elizabeth Wilson 13 Daughter
Jeanett Wilson 12 Daughter
James Wilson 10 Son
Daniel Logan 30 Brother
Nora Logan 26 Sister-in-law
Elizabeth Logan 55 Mother
Jeannett Johnson 37 Aunt If you look at the image the age is probably 57 on this census.
Sandra
-
That’s the one I was thinking of. I am thinking should be age 57 in 1910, so born abt 1863 in Scotland, as per census, but is 60 in 1915. When did she emigrate? 1873 or 1843? If 1843 that is about when George’s family emigrated, and she was born in the USA. Just a thought.

And I may have just found the missing Mary O. Johnston who was 25 in 1875, single. You will notice the middle name of Orr which I think was her mother‘s maiden name. Her obituary on findagrave says she is the daughter of the late George Johnston (who died in 1883).

I hate to spend the money for so many death certificates, but it may be the only way to solve who were the parents of George who died in 1883, Jeannie who died in 1882, and Janet Fish Johnston, who died in 1917 and Elizabeth Logan, who died 1913 and William who died in 1918.
-
I think you have likely found Jeanette in 1900. Congratulations. I was hoping it would say nurse since that’s her occupation in 1910.
I have been meaning to mention that in 1860, in Brooklyn, higher up on the same page where George Johnston is,is Samuel E. Johnston, age 40, born NewYork, lawyer. I don’t know if there is any connection to George.
-
I couldn't find any link to the Samuel you mentioned :-\
-
It took me a while to re-find the link to George Johnston in 1860 with Samuel on the same page but here it is
https://www.rootschat.com/links/01tnx/
There are so many Johnstons there may be no connection between Samuel and George.
I was also thinking about William whose aunt was Mrs. George Logan and he married Annie McArthur Wilson. So William’s father would have to be a brother to Elizabeth nee Johnston, and looking at the family in 1860 his father is likely to also be William. There were only William and Peter in 1860 as brothers to Elizabeth.
-
No mention of William in any obits was there.
If he was born in Scotland 1837, it would be good to find a birth record for him or see him on the 1841 census with parents. He showed in 1860 if I remember but not 1870 with the family.
Sandra
-
William did show in the 1841 Scottish census with parents George and Jane but I couldn’t share the link to ScotlandsPeople. In 1841, George and Jane were in Gorbals, Lanarkshire, Scotland. Although I found a marriage for George Johnston and Jeannie Orr on August 29, 1835 I could not find baptisms of any of their children born in Scotland, which were William, Eliza, Hellen, and Jane which were the same children in the same order in 1860 in New York with correct ages.
As for Samuel Johnston, this must be him in 1855.
https://www.familysearch.org/en/search/collection/1937366
And in 1850 https://www.rootschat.com/links/01to5/
And I think he died in 1870 and it is looking like he is not related to George unless it is far back.

Sandra, you are fantastic. I bet that is George’s son William and I do note the O. for his middle name.
There is one complication, although ages are sometimes terrible on censuses. William who married Annie McArthur Wilson was age 32 on the 1900 census which makes him born about 1868 and George’s son William died in 1866. However, I still think William who married Annie must be the son of William and grandson of George.
-
Not quite convinced with that theory Peggy.
Annie Mc Arthur Wilson arrived on the 11 th September and was married on the 18th September.

I was thinking that William’s aunt was Mrs. George Logan nee Elizabeth Johnston. Unless William’s father went back to Scotland and married there and left his son there but that doesn’t make sense if William 0. Who died 1866 in New York is his father. I don’t think William, husband of Annie Wilson, was born in Scotland.
-
My train of thought from the children of William and Annie - was that George was names after Williams father and Margaret after her mother ?

Goodness, you have presented a wealth of information that will take me some time to get through. But looks excellent. I am impressed.
-
I’m still working on things but first of all it looks like one mistake that I made based on the 1875 census was that Elizabeth nee Johnston who married George Logan was the daughter of George Johnston and Jane D above them in the census. That is why the 10 years age difference that I was wondering about between Eliza born1838 in Scotland to George Johnston and Jane D. and Eliza born 1848 wife of George Logan.
The William Johnston on the 1860 census as a son to George Johnston and Jane D is likely the one who died in an 1866 and was possibly not married. The two-year-old Jane on the 1860 census may be the one who died in 1879. So what happened to Eliza the daughter of George Johnston, and Jane Deward O Johnston?
-
I found an online tree, which says that Elizabeth fish Johnston,, daughter of George, Johnston and Jane Orr married James M. Mcvicar abt 1854. James and two of her three children died before 1860 when she is living at home with her parents.
Elizabeth remarried to John Henry Tweedy Mar2,1869 and then she died April 14, 1875. This all seems correct to me and fits with the different censuses.
Notice the middle name for Elizabeth.

Once again, Sandra, you have found so much valuable proof to verify what is being found on the various censuses, and added so much with your information on the Fish/Telford/Johnston/Logan families.
A couple of things have been rattling around in my head. Why would George Johnston, married to Jane Orr name his first daughter Elizabeth Fish Johnston, with the emphasis on her middle name of Fish? And who is 33 year-old William Johnston living with George in New York in 1850. William is transcribed as a farmer and would be born about 1817. https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MCY6-X8W
Could he be a brother, and in fact, could he be the William Johnston who was married to Eliza Fish on the 1841 census in Chirnside, Scotland? We don’t know when they married. Sandra did question before if William was George’s brother.
In 1841, in Chirnside, William is living with his in-laws, his wife Eliza Fish, and their daughter Janet who must be the Janet Fish Johnston, who died in 1917 in Yonkers. On that census, William is a carter and he was born about 1817.
I decided to follow William Johnston, in Scotland after 1841 to find his death and the names of his parents, but guess what? I never find William again. Eliza carries on largely with her sister Margaret Fish until Eliza dies April 3, 1894 in Chirnside.
William’s daughter was the Eliza Johnston who married George Logan and this theory about William being George’s brother would explain why Eliza and George Logan seem to be living with the George Johnston and Jane Orr Family in 1875. She would be George Johnston’s niece if William Johnston is his brother.
So why did William never return to Scotland if this is him? Did he die shortly after 1850 or did he decide to make a new life in the USA?
Another child of William Johnston and Eliza Fish is George Johnston who married Jane Telford. I haven’t finished following that couple through as yet.
-
Intriguing. William (born about 1817) may have stayed in Fulton New York after the 1850 census. He never seems to appear with Eliza in Scotland after that.
Still have a strong belief that he was a brother to George.
Sandra
-
A lot of things support the idea that William is a brother to George who married Jane Orr. A deterent is that in 1841 William is in Churnside, Berwickshire and George is in Gorbals, Lanarkshire. I guess we would never find their emigration about 1842 to see if they are travelling together.
-
By the way, Jenny McVicar is on the 1880 census so cannot have died in 1879.

Jane Fish Johnston was found.
Can't recall another Jane/Janet/Jean/Jeannie/Jeanette ?? :-\
This is an intriguing mystery
-
Yes, Jane, the daughter of George and Jane Orr, was born about 1841 in Scotland so she would see the 1841 to 1861 person.
Jane E, Elizabeth’s daughter, survived until 1922.
So….. could George and Jane Orr’s son William have had a daughter Jane? Or George’s possible brother William.
It seems that George‘s son in law Joseph T. Cameron was his executor as per an article May 19, 1884 in Brooklyn Union.
Was there an obit for George who died Sept 3, 1883. Or Jane Jan7, 1882?
-
I have just zeroed in on a James McVicker in 1875 age 17. I wonder if that should be age 19 and if he is another of Elizabeth’s children. I actually thought it was James in 1855, but it was transcribed as Max a.

I just phoned Greenwood Cemetery to talk about all the Johnstons in section 142 lot 22981. The lady said she had the names of 11 people buried in that lot and she was too busy to give all the information to me right now so she’s going to email me their names and is going to give me the email of someone who handles Genealogy requests.
-
Amazing to think that many people in one grave but there was 10 on my list. Not sure of I missed anyone off or not :-\
The other thing that I noticed was 5 buried on the same date. So was that burial dates or re-interment dates ?
Sandra
-
I phoned the lady back and asked if these 5 were re-internment dates. She said they could be cremations who were later buried but I don't think so. I did email the person whose name she gave me but he is away until tomorrow so should know more then.
-
I came up with 13 ?
Back shortly to write a list.
-
12 if I don't count the last name on the list.
James McVicar - 5 September 1856 and 5-9-1879 reinterred ?
Jane A Johnston - 16 March 1861 could be reinterred 5-9-1879 ?
George McVicar - 23 - 4- 1857 and 5-9 - 1879 reinterred ?
Elizabeth F Tweedy - 16-4-1875
Ellen D Johnston - 25-8-1877 and 5-9-1879 reinterred ?
George A M Johnston 5-9-1879
Jane A Johnston 16 March 1861 and 5-9-1879 reinterred ?
Jane D O Johnston 19-1-1892
Elizabeth Johnstone 18-7-1882
George Johnstone 7 -9-1883
Sarah F Johnston 3-4-1899
Peter Johnston 10-1-1923
Maria Halk 3-6-1863 - suspect ?
-
Looking at your list of 12 and comparing to what they sent me with 11, they are the same except for Maria Halk and you have Jane A listed twice. Took me a while to realize that Jane A was listed twice!! I counted more than once and couldn't see why you had 12 and I had 11.
If I had to guess, maybe James 1856 was one of Elizabeth's sons that was on the 1855 census in my opinion. And George a son born and died 1857. But then we have that James McVicar age 17 on the 1875 so born 1858. Did they name a second son James?
Not sure about George A M Johnston.
I have written and asked about Jane A. Johnston 1861. Could she be the missing Agnes born in Scotland?

Thank you, Sandra for the information regarding George AM Johnston.
When I search the Greenwood website, using the lot number of 22981, his name does not appear.
When I searched all the 6000+ deaths in 1875, his name does not appear.
When I searched all the people buried in 1875 with first name George, he does not appear.
When I searched in 1879, His name does not appear.
There must be a misspelling or a misfiling involved here.
Or findagrave is wrong. Peter and Sarah did have a son George W Johnston, September 17, 1878 who could’ve died in 1879.
So I have emailed the contact person for Greenwood that I was given.

I phoned Greenwood again regarding George A.M.Johnston because my contact did not get back to me. I was told to just wait because my contract is working on it so there must be a website or filing or misspelling problem or something.

George J. Logan, last seen on the 1880 New York census with his wife Elizabeth nee Johnston, had a brother James A. Logan who died Apr 12, 1893 in Tarrytown, Westchester, New York. Perhaps his obit would mention his brother George if George still alive, and we could narrow down the date of death for George who died before the 1900 census.
-
I was reviewing some of the earlier articles, and this one regarding Agnes McDonald nee Tweedy on findagrave says she is the daughter of Henry and Sarah Tweedy. I am thinking she is the daughter of John Henry Tweedy and Elizabeth Johnston. I will doublecheck this. Findagrave does have mistakes.

Alexander C Smith 16 Son
John B Smith 10 Son
John Crawford 74 Cousin
Jean P Telford 39 Sister-in-law

George Johnston 25 Cousin. (these two seem to stay together on other census)
Jane Johnston 22 Cousin.
I have learned that Elizabeth Johnston, daughter of William Johnston and Eliza Fish, had a brother George who married Jane Telford and a sister Margaret who married Alexander Nesbit Telford, a brother to Jane Telford.
George and Jane's son William is the one who went to Yonkers and married Annie McArthur Wilson in 1893.
Alexander and Margaret's daughter Janet Johnston Telford born in Gateshead, Co. Durham, England also went to Yonkers. Her husband was John Booth Smith.

Good morning, Sandra. I hope you saw my reply number 179 which was a follow up on the 1925 census.
As for the parents of Agnes Georgina McDonald nee Tweedy, I wasn’t thinking of John Henry’s second wife. Now it makes sense.
I saw several entries for George Logan, wire worker, but didn’t think he was Elizabeth Johnston’s husband so didn’t really bother with him. Perhaps I should take another look as to who he is.
Thanks for the death notices for James A. Logan.
As for George A.M. Johnston, I haven’t heard further from Greenwood. But I have written to the source on findagrave to see if they can tell me anything.
As for John Caldwell Johnston who died in Montclair, New Jersey in 1938 I haven’t found him on the 1930 census to see if he is staying with any of these Johnstons to find out if he was related to them. The last time I found him between before his death in 1938, he was residing with his two daughters in Yonkers in 1915.

The other thing I remembered was Elizabeth Logan on the 1900 and 1910 census status is married. On the 1910 census she has been married for 36 years which would be correct if she was married 1874. So maybe the husband was ill and that is why he is not with her. :-\

I just doublechecked Elizabeth Logan. In 1900, says married, mother of 6 children, 3 living. In 1910, says married 36 years, 6 children, 6 living.
So perhaps George was alive and became a wire cutter and they are separated.
I did find their son George who married Mary Ellen Waldron in 1905, 1910, and 1915 but in 1915 he is living with his sister Eliza Wilson along with his two sons. Could Mary Ellen/Ellen/Ellia have died between 1910 and 1915? Perhaps abt 1911 when son Daniel F. was born?
In 1910, George is living with his inlaws Charles and Helen Waldron and she has had 16 children, 5 living. https://www.rootschat.com/links/01tnq/

Parents of Alexander Nesbitt Telford were William Telford and Jane Patterson, that is probably where
the sister of William Johnston got her middle name Patterson - Jane Patterson Johnston born 12 October 1869 Chirnside Berwick. Parents of both William and Jane Patterson Johnston were George Johnstone and Jane Telford.
That left John Crawford with the family in 1925, he was a cousin. Aged 74 years. So born about 1851.
Noted that he either had a carpet shop or worked in a carpet shop in Essex New Jersey in 1892
Note John C Crawford was living with Margaret Telford - at Oliver Avenue in 1910.
John C Crawford was a shipping clerk for a carpet shop and a cousin to Margaret Johnston Telford.

Thanks for all these latest obits. There is a mistake in the obit of Jean Telford in 1966. Her parents should be Alexander Telford and Margaret Johnston, not George Telford.
William Johnston who married Annie McArthur Wilson had 2 sisters named Jane Patterson Johnston, one Oct 12, 1869 and one Mar 24,1878 so the first one must have died young.
There were two Logan boys on the 1915 census, one was Daniel F. Logan born abt 1911, presumed both were the sons of George Logan, Jr. I will have to check the sons of Daniel F. Logan, George's brother, to see if he had a son Daniel F. Logan in 1911, otherwise must be George's son.
One more typo on findagrave - George Logan who died 1930 was born 1876 not 1867.

these plus the 1950 census are all the same address.
The 1940 census address is the same as this newspaper cutting of Staff Sergeant Daniel F Logan son of Nora at 42 Rose Hill Terrace.
https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-herald-statesman/166738755/
-
Nora died at 454 Riverdale Ave in 1952.
Daniel and Nora in 1950 454 Riverdale Ave.
When Daniel was awarded the Bronze Star address was 42 Rose Hill Terrace.
I guess it makes sense that the Nora who died in 1952 married Daniel Logan before the 1910 census and her husband Daniel died before 1915 when we find nephew Daniel with his aunt Eliza Wilson. He was still with his aunt in 1920 and 1930 for some reason.
Maybe that is the Daniel who died in 1912 but he died in Poughkeepsie.
Besides that Eliza’s brother George J. Logan reportedly only had one son who was also George John Logan in1903. So the nephew Daniel F on the 1915 was not his son but Daniel’s son even though it could be misconstrued to be George’s son. But where was George’s wife in 1915?

The Nora that lived at 454 Riverdale died in 1952 as per reply # 199. She was age 70 which would roughly agree with the Nora that is on the 1910 census who was age 26. I am thinking she is the one that was married to the brother Daniel of Eliza Wilson. The one who died in 1961 as per reply#202 must be the next generation. Will study that further.

Sandra, you are wonderful. Thanks for straightening me out with regard to Nora Logan. I misunderstood about the incident in 1952. Poor woman losing her husband so soon after marriage.
And thanks for all the Telford Obituaries. I love it that so many of them give the date and place of birth.
Did you notice that I posted the information about the death of George A.M. Johnston which was found by Greenwood cemetery? Not that it clarifies where he fits in this scheme of things.

I found Cousin John Crawford in Yonkers in 1910, widower, age 54, with Maggie Telford, widow, age 64, born Scotland and her daughter Jenny age 23 born England. Maggie must be nee Johnston. This senses says John born England, but I doubt it. He has been in New York since 1872.

Goodness, 2 of them, John Crawford, deaths several months apart. Neither on findagrave. George John Logan died at 191 Nepperhan Ave also 1930. George supposedly buried Oakland Cemetery.

There is another John Crawford, who died in Yonkers in 1934.

Yes, I did see that entry. John Crawford Crawford came up and many entries in Canada as well.
Not sure if that was clerical errors. Didn't find any references in Scotland but you many have better luck
Sandra
-
Someone sent me that obituary privately and I think it is the correct person although there were no relatives or family names given. He was born in Eyemouth which is Berwickshire. Moved to Hastings in 1907 which is probably a year out.
I wish I could provide the link.
Peggy
-
Yes basically the same info as reply 226 - just names Eyemouth Scotland as a birth place and age variation.
So same region as the Johnstone families.
Sandra
-
I was looking back at other obituaries and the address of 17 Nepperhan Ave.where John Crawford died in 1930 is the same address as where John B Smith died in 1965. This has to be the correct John Crawford.
-
I checked the 1930 census and John B Smith lived on Nepperhan Avenue in 1930. Unfortunately the census is done in April and John Crawford died in March so would not be on this census.

I think I have found something which makes sense. I always wondered why George Johnston and Jeanie Orr would name their first daughter Elizabeth Fish Johnston. Why Fish?
When I found the death record for George Johnston in 1883, his age was 75 years, 5 months, 24 days so I worked that back to Apr 10, 1808. Today, I found the birth of George Johnston on Apr 24, 1808 in Chirnside and his parents were George Johnston and Elizabeth Fish. I strongly feel this is the correct birth and a good reason to name first daughter Elizabeth Fish Johnston. George and/or his parents must have moved to Gorbals where I found him in 1841 with the 4 oldest children before they moved to Johnstown, Fulton Co., and then Brooklyn. So William on the 1850 census may not be his brother but could be a relative and could be the one who was married to Eliza Fish abt 1840. A possible "fishy" connecton.
-
Yes, that looked right. Also have a note that George Johnston and Elizabeth Fish had a daughter Agnes Johnston.
Also an entry for a George Johnston and Betty Fish had a son Peter Johnston.
Didn't explore any further.
Would be interesting to get a look at these records..........

Finally enough, I have checked that birth out before. Nothing came up when I entered Johnson/Johnston Crawford but when I left the first name out, up came John Crawford with parents James Crawford Slater and Isabella Whitelaw in the Parish of Dunse. Not really thinking it is our John Crawford.
I have written to Mount Hope cemetery about John Crawford.
-
I just phoned Mount Hope Cemetery about John Crawford. He is indeed there in section 87 lot 52. I asked who he is buried with and they said Janet Smith 1949, John Smith 1965 , and Mabel Smith 1992.
Then I asked about Margaret Telford, and where she might be. Well, Section 87, Lot 52!
They said they had no personal information about John Crawford, but that I could phone the funeral home which was J.D.Phillips.
-
Janet Johnson Telford/Smith was the granddaughter of Elizabeth Johnston or so the 1891 Scotland Census - Shelters House. Chirnside Berwick.
Margaret Johnston Telford would be her Aunt - so is the link Johnston/Crawford ???
Sandra
-
Yes, I saw that 1891census. We must be close to solving this.
-
Janet Telford Johnston born abt 1882 is the daughter of George Johnston married to Jane Telford. George' sister was Margaret Johnston who married Alexander Nesbit Telford. So that census makes sense. But still what about John Crawford.
George's sister Eliza married George J. Logan in usa.
The other sister was Janet Fish Johnston whom we found in Yonkers.
George, Eliza, Janet, and Margaret were the four children of Eliza Johnston nee Fish found on the 1851 Chirnside census.
Wish we could find William Johnston's parents - he married Eliza Fish, but marriage record not found. Perhaps he had a sister who married a Crawford.

Sandra, that is the correct John Crawford in 1905 because he is living at 19 Beach St. In Manhattan and that is the address that Margaret Telford was going to in 1906 when she emigrated!
John’s wife is Elizabeth, they are both 45 and have been in the USA 30 years. She is from England. John is a shipping clerk.
So Elizabeth died between 1905 and 1910 when he is a widower living with Margaret Telford. But not the Elizabeth who died October 14, 1907.
-
I think I have found the same couple in 1900 though they are at a different address which is Varick Street. John says born March 1854 and Elizad born January 1853 in England, says they have been married 19 years have had two children, but none are living. Amazing to finally find something.

I feel confident that you are following the right family in Cocksburnpath and then in Eyemouth. This would explain why John Crawford’s obit said he was from Eyemouth.
I am beginning to think that John Crawford was not related to the Telfords but perhaps just a friend. Alexander Nesbit Telford’s father William was also born in Cocksburnpath.
When George Johnston Telford immigrated in 1895 to Philadelphia, his final destination was to his friend Crawford in Orange, New Jersey.

It was in reply226 - the same John Crawford - who worked at the carpet company was among workers who were recipients of the $1000.........................

Oh, I didn’t understand the separate clipping with just his name and address on.
Last night I got for free the marriage record of John Crawford and Eliza J Boatfield. I clicked on the German genealogical group and then I was directed to the New York City vital records site where you could put in your info. John was 45 and Eliza J Boatfield was 48. They were both single and it was their first marriage although John had his single written over the word widow. What amazed me was that John’s residence at time of marriage was Jefferson, Ohio and Eliza’s marriage was Orange, New Jersey.
I then tried to get Eliza’s death record, and although it came up in the list, the image did not appear, so I sent them a message. This morning I tried to get John‘s death certificate and I got the message “Oops an error has occurred. Please try again later.”
-
Noticed that Sophia Crawford passed away in 1908, ripe old age of 86 years.
Sophia Crawford - aged 86 years - 1908 - 739 / 34 - Eyemouth
Checked passenger lists just in case that if it was John Crawford's mother, he may have returned - sadly no luck on that avenue.

-
Although I thought that Sophia’s surname at death should be Douglas, I looked for her on ScotlandsPeople and found her as the widow of John Crawford, Coast Guard officer.
Her parents were James Cribbes and Mary Crooks.
Perhaps she has an obituary.

Sometime ago, I found a John Crawford in 1880 in New Jersey, age 34, cooper, from Scotland with wife Eliza 38 from England, with daughter Agnes age 8 born New Jersey. When I found the record, I didn't know about Eliza Boatfield/Botfield. Now I am thinking this is possibly them, living together as man and wife, long before their legal marriage in 1892.
But is Agnes John's daughter or Eliza's from a previous relationship. Agnes would be born 1872 and John supposedly emigrated 1874 if we found the right couple in 1900 and if the emigration year is correct which it may not be. In 1900, if we found the right couple, they have been married 19 years and Eliza has had 2 children, none living. Eliza's age is probably 10 years out in 1900.
John is age reportedly age 45 in 1892 when he married and Eliza is 48. I think the ages are close enough to be the same couple. Several of John's siblings were coopers.

Maybe John Crawford was married previously, I have searched that avenue previous but found nothing. Would be nice to turn up that Montclair or New jersey connection as well.
Any luck with your earlier enquiries.

I did the search without a first name and found Sophia who died 1894, in Montclair, age 22 which I am betting is Agnes born 1872 on the 1880 census. So I ordered the record.
Also ordered another for a Robert M who also died in 1894 age 21, also in Montclair although Robert doesn't seem a likely name.
We shall see.

On no, Peggy - can you cancel those orders. Don't think they are your Crawford's.

Upon reviewing the George Johnston censuses, husband of Jane D., on the 1865 census, he says he is naturalized. Since he emigrated 1845-1850, and is on the 1850 census in Johnstown, Fulton Co., New York census, I don't think he can finalize naturalization applications before 5 years of residency. So finalization could be 1850-1865, possibly 1855-1865. Perhaps the application would give his date and place of birth. We might know then if he was born in Chirnside for sure.
-
I found an index card for a George johnston, Oct 11, 1858, Brooklyn, Bundle 212, record 71, witness John Gillespie, 111 Chatham Street. No Idea if this is the correct George and no idea how to find the actual record.

I found the actual image on New York City archives, but I can’t copy and paste it here. The only extra information was that Williams middle name is Orr, he has been in the city for 13 years and in the USA for 17 years, which fits with George and Jane being on the 1850 census. With his age being 30 years, one month and one day, that backtracks to October 24, 1836 which fits with the birth of the son of George and Jane Orr in Scotland. I think it must be their son. But would like to know if he had any children perhaps George AM Johnston buried in the George Johnston plot.
-
This might be William in 1865. William O Johnston, age 28, first marriage, born Scotland, machinist, parent of no children, wife Mary, 36, born N Y Co. , mother of 6 children, second marriage, Stephen Otton, stepson, age 10,born Kings Co., living in Ward 05, Brooklyn.
https://www.familysearch.org/en/search/collection/1491284
There is further information on a Stephen Otton born July 9,1856 in Brooklyn with parents Robert Otton and Mary Fulkerson sometimes says Mary Ferguson. He died April 6, 1920 in Brooklyn.
Robert Otton was born 1827 in England and died Nov 22, 1859. So William’s marriage after that.
-
This is Mary in 1905 as Johnson.
https://www.rootschat.com/links/01tno/
-
I think this is Stephan in 1855 so he was not born in 1856, unless there was a second Stephen.
https://www.rootschat.com/links/01tpl/
-
According to a tree on familysearch, Mary Johnston died Sept 1908 in Brooklyn. She was born abt 1828 in New York, and was the mother of Stephen Otton, born 1854 as per the 1855 census, the only child on any census although the 1865 census with Wm. O Johnston said she was the mother of 6 children.
Mary seems to have kept the surname of Johnston after William died in 1866. I can’t find the death of Mary or an obituary which might verify her marriage to William and/or the birth of 6 children, and any possible Johnston relatives.
Thanks for any help.

You have uncovered some very interesting information, Sandra. I am sure you have found the right Mary Johnston‘s death although the obituary seems quite confused between her husband’s name and son‘s name. And her death certificate gives her parents as Jeremiah and Lucy Johnston.
Also, I wonder why Lucy Fulkerson’s info on findagrave doesn’t mention her daughter Mary.
I wonder if there is an obit for Robert Otton Nov 22, 1859.
I am curious about the six children, but do wonder if the 1865 census was mistaken.
-
Although Robert Otton was supposed to have died November 22nd 1859 as per an online tree I have to wonder if perhaps Robert and Mary separated and she went to live with William O. Johnston.
Robert was a tailor, and I have looked at business directories, which I did before, but I took a second look at things.
In 1856-1857, there are 2 Robert Ottens, tailors.
https://www.rootschat.com/links/01tpn/
In 1882-1884, there is a Robert Otton, a tailor, 35 Fleet Place, next entry to Stephen 1882 to 1884, living 830 Monroe. Earlier on the same page, there is a Robert Otten, tailor, same address.
https://www.rootschat.com/links/01tpm/
I found another entry 1882 to 1884 in Brooklyn with several Ottons, one of whom was Stephen, spelled Otton, cabinetmaker, at 830 Monroe, no Robert.
https://www.rootschat.com/links/01tpn/
Could Robert have died later?
-
There was another Robert Otton, who died July 10, 1884 who lived at 35 Fleet Pl. and had wife Sarah Stevens. That would be the one I was finding in the 1882-1884 business directories.

Sandra, in reply #237, you said you had a note that there was the birth of an Agnes and a Peter to George Johnston and Elizabeth Fish. I scrolled through 2575 births between 1808 and 1820. I found both of them, along with George whom I had found earlier although they were all born in different places. I have George in 1808 in Chirnside, Peter in 1809 in Airds (mother Betty Fish), Margaret Maxwell born Apr 14, 1811 (mother Betty Fisch) in Airds, and Agnes on Mar 1819 in Gorbals. I do wonder about Peter and Margaret in Airds but presume that Betty Fish and Elizabeth Fish could be the same person. The birth of Agnes was promising in Gorbals as that is where I found son George born 1808 who married Jeanie Orr on the 1841 census in Gorbals, Lanarkshire. Theory is that George Sr. moved from Chirnside to Gorbals.
I didn't find a William born to that couple. Although I did find a William born 1820 in Foulden which is where George Johnston and Jane Telford married and had their first child. William had parents William Johnston and Margaret Guthrie so if this is the correct William, he is not a brother to George born 1808 to George Johnston and Elizabeth Fish.

George Logan married to Eliza Johnston had a brother James A. Logan who died April 12, 1893 in Tarrytown Westchester, New York. Perhaps if he has an obituary it will show that George is still alive in 1893 even though we can’t find George after 1880 for sure. Or better yet George’s sister Mary Ann Kerwin died January 22, 1902 in Tarrytown and perhaps her obituary might mention George.

Thanks for all these obits. As for George Logan in 1908, I will have to check into that. I did have George Logan married to Elizabeth Johnston with parents Daniel Logan and Mary Anderson but this obituary doesn’t fit my information. For one thing, this is George A. Logan and I believe Elizabeth‘s husband was George J. Logan.
-
In 1870, George Logan, age 22, stone cutter, is living with father Daniel age 65, and sister Mary Logan age 29, in Greenburgh, Westchester, New York. George married abt 1873 (don't have marriage record but daughter Eliza born Aug 17, 1873 in New Jersey) and Mary married abt 1875 to Henry James Kerwin (don't have marriage record). In 1875, in Brooklyn, Elizabeth's husband is George J. Logan, age 27, a stone cutter, so born abt.1848, daughter Eliza age 1. In 1880, in Village of Tarrytown,New York, Elizabeth's husband is George, age 29, stone cutter so born abt 1849. Also, sister in law Jeanette Johnston. Can't refind in 1900. In 1910, Elizabeth is living with her son-in-law James Wilson, is married, M1, has been married 36 years, has had 6 children, 6 still living (think only 3 are living). So Elizabeth always says married up to 1910 but where is George?
I paid for George's birth record on Scotland's People. There is a son George, no initial, born Aug 31, 1848 to Daniel Logan, laborer, and Mary Anderson.
So far, I am thinking that findagrave has the wrong date of birth for George A. Logan who died in 1908.On the 1880 census, George A. is 30 in Albany where he seems to have stayed. If George A. is in Albany in 1880, and our George is in Tarrytown, they have to be two different people. George A. had a daughter Jane, Christening: 17 Jun 1877, State Street Presbyterian Church, Albany, Albany, New York. the 1900 census says George in Albany born Aug 1846. the 1905 census says George in Albany age 55 so born 1850. which agrees with the 1880 census. I guess a death certificate might have his parents names.

Thank you RJ137. This fellow is the right age to be my George Logan, Sr. but my George had wife Elizabeth in 1873 and this one had wife Mary. There was a George A. Logan who had wife Mary Espey but he was in Albany in 1880, unless he was in Yonkers before that.
Thanks again.

This is mainly for Sandra. Today I received the death certificates that I ordered and paid for at the New Jersey State Archives and you were absolutely right. Robert M Crawford who died 1894 was the son of Henry Victor Crawford while Sophia Crawford who died in 1894 was actually Crawfordt, married, age 22, born Sweden, no parents listed on her death certificate. So neither belonged to John Crawford. I replied to the Archives and thanked them and mentioned Agnes age 8 who is living with John Crawford in 1880 in Montclair, Essex County. New Jersey, but is not found again so what happened to her?
As for George J. Logan, I am now wanting to pursue the death April 4, 1934 in Manhattan. It is quite feasible that it is the same person who was in the New York City Hospital in 1920 but we can’t be sure that it was our George J. Logan in 1920 as his middle initial is not there.

Well, big surprise. This time the death certificate of George Logan, who died April April 4, 1934 came up straight away on the New York City Archives.. but it is not our George because he is black, age 73, father Alexander Logan.

Today, I ordered the death certificate of John Caldwell Johnston(e), who died Oct 28, 1938 in Montclair, Essex Co., New Jersey. Hoping to find out if he was living with relatives. His name did not show up on the searchable database, but hope they can find it. Peggy
