I am looking for the parents and ancestors of my 5 x great grandfather, the Reverend John Harrop of Holmfirth, born about 1720 and married to Sarah Wilson. His monument in Holmfirth is inscribed in Latin which seems unusual.
Church records show that he was originally from Ashton under Lyne but I am unable to find any concrete evidence of family for him in Lancashire or Cheshire, although I do have records of his descendents in Yorkshire. Working backwards I have hit a brick wall!
"Harrop" does seem to be quite a common name in Lancashire around this time.
I would be grateful for any information you might have.
Thank You,
Heather.

There is a 'Select' transcribed baptism on Ancestry for a John Harrop baptised 21 Jan 1720 at St Michael's, Ashton under Lyne - father Benjamin Harrop.
His ordination date is also shown on that site; 14 Sep 1743. His subsequent employment places and his death - shown as 28 July 1795 when he was employed at Holmfirth. (I think that's what that entry means!)

Thank you. I do have some concerns about his father being Benjamin as there are no children or grandchildren with this name. Family names seem to be John, James, Thomas and Joseph but I won't rule Benjimin out!

Found him on https://theclergydatabase.org.uk/jsp/search/index.jsp - best route is just to search by surname.
Educated at St Catherine's, Cambridge
He shows up on Alumni Cantabrigienses but his father isn't named. As a sizar it's unlikely he was from a wealthy family. Age at death may help filter possible births.
I fear it's unlikely that St Cat's will have any further information, otherwise it would have reached Alumni Cantab.
