I have found a baptism (1597) and a burial (1598) in the Wedmore parish register which shows, in Latin, that the child's father was de Tanton. (i.e. of Tanton).
Is anyone aware of a place; hamlet, location, farm etc. called Tanton in reasonbly close proximity of Wedmore. I guess it's possible that the place is Taunton, but wonder if there was a Tanton closer to Wedmore.

I think it is Taunton - I don't know of a Tanton. This is a list that includes Tanton and Wedmore looked at revenues in the area about the right time https://www.google.co.uk/books/edition/Notes_and_Queries_for_Somerset_and_Dorse/oezgAAAAMAAJ?hl=en&gbpv=1&dq=tanton+wedmore&pg=RA1-PA323&printsec=frontcover
The list also mentions Archdiaconatus Tanton (Archdeaconate Tanton) as well as Archdiaconatus Wells and Bath
Added - Another reference to Tanton and a Tanton Castle http://www.rootschat.com/links/01tmw/

Pronounce Tanton with a west-country accent. It sounds almost like Taunton.

Thank you Molly C, and Kay99 for the references. It certainly looks like it was Taunton.
