Title: passenger list
Post by: sandynz on Friday 07 February 25 01:53 GMT (UK)
I have been hoping to find the passenger list for my husband's great great grandparents coming to New Zealand. They were William (date of birth 1861) and Isabella Hall nee Sayers (date of birth 1861) they were married in Ireland on June 21st 1883. Then their daughter Elizabeth was born in Christchurch in June 1884. Nothing on Family Search fits. I wonder if asking for a look up at the national archives would help me, but I'm not actually sure what to ask for as the national archives seems to assume that what you are looking for will be on Family Search. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hi Sandynz,

I can't find them either.

Obituaries published in local newspapers were often helpful. Have you found one for William HALL or his wife? When and where did they die?

I wonder if the couple arrived first at an Australian port before coming over the ditch in a smaller vessel.

Regards,

William died in 1940 and Isabella in March 1944. Her death certificate says she'd been in New Zealand 60 years. There's a death notice for her but I haven't found anything for him.  I'll have a look at some Australian passenger lists from that time, might find something.

This might be helpful.

Here is a link to the Archives NZ Guide to Migration listing their holdings at their various offices. From what you're already told us the family might have arrived at Lyttelton, so the Christchurch office of Archives NZ might have some information.

I think you're very fortunate to have such a narrow search window for their arrival in NZ, between June (accounting for travel time, about September) 1883 to June 1884.

Can you tell us anything else about William HALL?

Oh thank you, that link is helpful, I've been going around in circles on Archives NZ. I was in Christchurch last year and went to the library, there SHOULD have been passenger lists there but when the librarian brought up the microfiche for me it only had coroner's reports. She thought the complete one might be on Wellington but I got lost trying to figure it out.
What I know about William is he was married in Strabane, Tyrone, Northern Ireland. He and Isabella also known as Bella had 6 children: Elizabeth born in 1884, Margaret Ellen 86, Alice Louise 89, William 92 and hubby's Grandmother Florence May in 95. From what I've seen he was a laborer. That's about all the information I have.

Here's the marriage in Ireland- Donemana Presbyterian Church not Strabane (Strabane is merely the Registration district).

William's occupation is farmer and he was living in the townland of Gobnascale, near Derry City-

Possibly William's father?
Probate of the Will of John Hall late of Gobnascale County Tyrone Farmer who died 25 March 1900 granted at Londonderry to Francis Hall and James Wright Farmers. Effects £391 10s.

Thankyou, yes I have John Hall and Ellen Glen as potential parents for William, and Samuel and Elizabeth (nee Sayers) Sayers as parents for Isabella. Most of the information on those people comes from other peoples trees, which I always take with a grain of salt.  At one point I had the wrong Isbella in my tree. Which didn't help.

Thank you, yes this is them, one daughter obviously there too. It was when I found Isabella's death details that I realized I had the wrong Isabella in my tree at one point. Also trying to find details of Florence's birth stalled me until I found out her mother was listed as Bella on the birth certificate. There's another Florence  May Hall who pops up too, but she lived in Wellington.

Hi Sandy,

Here's a useful list of emigrant ships arriving at Lyttelton within your search period.
