Just wondering if anyone can shed any light on this one.
According to 1851-81 censuses for Melbourn, Cambridgeshire, Mary Gouldthorp (as wife of George Chamberlain) was born in Melbourn in about 1821. I can't find any birth/baptism to correspond. The only one near is Mary Goldthorpe 9 Nov 1821 in Hitchin, 20 miles away. Or is it not so unusual to give a wrong place of birth so consistently? The Hitchin Goldthorpe family seem to remain in Hitchin.
It may be another lost baptism, or perhaps census registrations were often fluid like this, but just wondering if I've missed something.
Many thanks.

I forgot to add that Mary and George Chamberlain married in 1839, presumably with her at age 18, so unlikely she is a widow at this age.
-
Her marriage names her father as John Gouldthorp
Childrens birth registrations give mothers maiden surname as Gouldthorp
-
There is a marriage in Melbourn in 1814 of a John Gouldthorp and Elizabeth King
ADDED
There are non conformist baptisms in Melbourn for children of this couple

Thank you rosie99, that is very useful. It does seem like the Melbourn and Hitchin families are different, and with the Melbourn births looking like they run from 1818-1831, the birth of Mary in 1821 could just be lost in the registers somewhere.
ADDED Have also just discovered on the 1841 Hitchin census that Mary Goldthorpe (now Maria) born abt. 1821 is still with her family in Baldock, whereas Mary Gouldthorp in Melbourne is already married by then.
