Well here we are folks, by popular demand, seems most rootschatters prefer it weekly,  but we can also add to the monthly one if the subject appeals.

Sun out and looks a nice day but oh boy, we have had a hard frost, thought there would be as last night it was a beautiful clear sky and a bright moon.

Thank you  :-* :-*

Just been to the surgery to give my blood for its onward journey to the hospital.  And then, to add to the joy of a Monday morning, a visit to the dentist later.  Tomorrow is a visit to hospital for another scan to see if they can find the second brain cell.  Deep joys!!

Good morning - thanks LM for starting the new week..

Not such a good start to the day so far.. dull and cloudy, no frost last night though but still a chilly 4C outside… no wonder my window cleaners just messaged me to say he’ll be here about 10am not 9 am! Who can blame him.

Off to yogalates in an hour so that’s my start for the wk… makes me feel 10ft tall when I come out all that stretching, bending etc wonderful.

Hope others have a good / better week.
Good luck with all your appointments BumbleB.

A bright start here and a good forecast for the day, I might do a bit of gardening. The edges of the back lawn are all higgledy piggledy and there's quite a lot of dead stuff that needs removing.

I was still aching yesterday from a new Pilates class on Thursday. Toning class tonight, it's a bit like Zumba, which in my case means losing track of what moves are next! I take comfort from the fact that I'm by no means the only one.  ;D

BumbleB, Wednesday will be here in no time!

Didn't get a lot of gardening done, despite the mild forecast there's been a chilly wind. Never mind, at least I got some more of the dead stuff into the garden waste bin, ready for when they start collections again.

Morning all
We’ lost’ a whole day yesterday as OH ended up in an ambulance off to hospital early doors with asthma and a chest infection. When I left him last night he was still in an and e but he text to say at 3.40 am today they’d got him a bed on a ward. Mobile phones are wonderful!
Absolutely brilliant staff,  but working so hard esp when they’re full and folk still keep coming in. When I walked through  an and e mid afternoon to go to the loo, the waiting room was standing room only - scary.

Sorry to hear you had a trip to A & E Candleflame.. I’m sure you’re relieved your OH is now on a ward and hope he improves quickly and you can have him back home.
The medical staff are all working under such extreme circumstances and it, so far, doesn’t seem to be improving much!

Three weeks in a row a friend, who we are driving to hospital for an outpatients appt in the eye dept, has had it cancelled about an hour before it’s due to take place! He’s getting very frustrated with the situation now… and who can blame him. It’s a long term issue he has so sometimes time is of the essence for him to be seen!

Today the weather has improved and tge sun is shining so must dash and get the washing out!

Have a good day and thoughts with those not doing so well.

A murky day here ,just phoned re replacement hand rail on the stairs ,has to be on the other side now the stair lift is in place, but if that fails then I will need one and visitors too of course.

It will be done tomorrow morning.
My sons could do it but the chap who does these small jobs gets it done in an hour or so ,£39 ,so a good price ,people at Church recommended him.

Been asked to phone to Health Centre re their Fracture Clinic and risk of falling and fractures,——— considering I have attended The Salford Royal
Fracture and Osteoporosis Clinic for bone density tests regularly pre Covid it does make you wonder if anyone reads your records.
I haven’t had an appt there for years!
I doubt things have improved although I do take Evacal tablets - Calcium and Vit D3.
Never mind it is just a phone call.

I do need my hair cutting and I dread it , it is so straight and has lost its bounce - tablets etc!
I look as if I have just been let out from somewhere with strict rules when it is just straight.
I will look into home visits , my usual hairdresser might do it .
Hope all those with troubles of health or well-being ,family worries and isolation are alright, RootsChat certainly helps ,

Well things to do and so Cheerio, Viktoria.

Hello again folks
Really a dull day today, no washing  out,  boring subject!!

My grandaughter  has been diagnosed with anemia,  got her results online but has to see the Dr who referred  her for the tests, do you think she can see a Dr, no, she can't,  apparently one has to see the same  Dr who referred  you, he isnt there full time, and so no medication prescribed,  how ridiculous is that?, her surgery you have to ring at 8am, if there are no appts left for that day you can't book in advance,  it really us getting ridiculous.

Viktoria, you spoke about having had a perm in the past, have you thought of not having one anymore, I had perms I would say for nearly 60 years, then my hair started to break at the  roots , so I had to have a more or less a straight  style , taken me a long time time to get used to it, thank goodness for modern hair rollers, I am sure your current hairdresser would agree to visit you if you have been a regular.

Candleflame, do hope your husband is recovering.

Roobarb, I think by popular  demand our compost bin collection has been reinstated,  we were meant to have 3 months without a collection, someone has seen sense.

You talk sense L.M.only trouble is a straight style makes me look as if I have been let out of prison in the good old days when “ Institution cuts “ were the norm ——-,another bane was basin cuts when a basin was put in a child’s head and the hair still showing was cut! Honestly .

I need a softer style, with some lift ,we will see.
My underactive Thyroid does  not help either.
A small problem in the grand scheme of things.

I don’t want to be a little old lady with a perm, even though that is exactly what I am.

Well Viktoria I will let you into a secret just between  us !!
When i wash my hair I use rollers, I roll as far down as I can, when I go to bed I just leave the top rollers in, works OK for me, I use what is called an affro comb but give it a good brush in between, i wash it twice a week, works for me but it has taken a long time to get it reasonably ok  I have it cut every 4 weeks.
I sometimes get complimented which boosts me up no end,  now just you and I know my secret Viktoria

LM
Title: Re: Diary summary week ending 9th February 2025
Post by: Viktoria on Tuesday 04 February 25 21:52 GMT (UK)
Now that is a good idea, leaving the top rollers in ,it is so un comfy leaving the
lower ones in.
As a teenager,I used Kirby grips and rolled my  hair into rolls like flat snails and secured them with two grips crossed over ,then I’d run my head under the hot tap and blot my hair dry - well dryish —- That worked then plastic rollers came out .
I really do look as if I had escaped from prison in the old days without a bit of lift and curl.
I did home perms but would not dare to do one on my hair now or have any colour.I have never had colour added .

Ah well, I would love to be really silver white ,it is such a soft ,gentle ,forgiving colour.
I have hair and many poor souls would be glad to have some ,those really ill or following treatment .

Early night I think ,started a good book ,one of my presents from Lily’s mummy .
Winchester Cathedral, ransacked and much damaged by  Cromwellian soldiers , many tombs of Saxon Bishops and The Kings  of the 9th and 10 th centuries, were opened and the bones thrown about .
They were gathered up and put  in boxes and stored, a present day historian has written about them and the efforts to sort out out “whose  leg is this? “
Only just started it so I imagine at least  bones  could be sorted by DNA ,but even with the bones sorted identification must have been impossible.

Well son back from next door soon ,he is sleeping here again ,his idea, I suppose he feels he is more on hand if I am ill again .

So night night ,sleep tight.
Viktoria.

LM, last year was the first time we were charged for our garden waste collection, there was a lot of opposition to it, I went ahead and paid as I have lawns back and front and shrubs as well as lots of plants. The prunings from the shrubs take up a lot of room in the bin. A lot of people in my road hadn't opted for the bin collection but in the road around the corner a lot of people had, despite many of them having their drives widened across the whole front garden. I guess they must have a lot going on in the back garden.  :)

Candleflame, I hope your husband is getting better, keep us posted won't you?

Sadly some people in our village are finding that other unknown persons are adding garden waste or even dog poo bags to their green bin.  This is an occasional rather than a regular thing, I should add, but still, what a nerve!

A warmish, partially sunny day here in Devon, so the washing line is full yet again.  Where does it all come from?  Sometimes I think that my laundry basket is like the Magic Porridge Pot, but saying "Laundry Basket, stop!" doesn't work.

Some people are flouting tbe rules,  putting garden rubbish in their everyday bin, getting away with it, I  don't suppose the collection men even look in the bins,  if I have anything  that I am  not sure if it should go into the everyday bin I put it in a plastic bag on top, they can either take if or leave it, that way it is their choice

I have washing  out today and have washed 2 net curtains and spring hasn't even sprung yet, I can't do the whole house in one go now, to many windows.

I am sure somewhere there are daffs out, mine are up but not in bloom, ,

I had to laugh,  I had to ask my husband to help me put the nets back up, think I have lost height so he helped me, when it came to what I call shooshing the curtains to make them even gathers he has no idea,  I just couldn't help laughing but he tried, I dread to think what they will look like if I am not here.

Firstly, hopes for improvement in health of RootsChatters and not forgetting
“ other halves” .

I was told off last dustbin day ,because I had put a crisp packet  in with tins ,bottles and plastic——— I really thought they were recyclable .
So bin not emptied ——-.
Handrail for banister fitted today , BUT ,when I rode up the stairs my knee jammed against the lowest edge ,so a phone call and the fitter came back.
He really ought to have asked me to do a trial run ,however he came straight back, I sat down and he immediately said”you need to sit right back” that was better  but at the top it was still very tight so I sat b ack in the seat ‘ ——that gave me a spare inch and it cleared - same at the top , I can swivel it round to step off on the little landing but the arm does not quite clear, so as the fitter is bound by height regulations etc my son said he knew there were other types of bracket that would give better clearance , by raising the bannister by an inch or so ,the mount is the same and doesn’t need to be changed .
I do however have to seal all the knots in the mount and rail,  best done  last thing at night or my son might stick to the rail ——
Shed tomorrow and wider gate too.
Ooooooh. The excitement ——

A bright cold day today but really sunny.
Sorted lots of papers out today. Not really filed any since just before Christmas , I like them in order , and the things Belgium ask for when my Belgian pension is reviewed each year!

Steak for son’s  tea,not sure what I will have, not really hungry these days, but soup in freezer- individual servings so a  microwave  thaw and crusty bread or a cheese roll.
Then Yoghurt .

Hope all are alright given there are some challenging conditions out there, bravely borne , You all constantly amaze me with your fortitude.

So an early night ready for the thrills  or frustrations tomorrow may bring !

Cheerio.
Viktoria.

Viktoria, I don't think you're the only one to get confused about whether some items are recyclable, they don't make it easy. Some people around here haven't had their recycling bins emptied because they've put plastic bags in there. It's a very common error, in fact a friend of mine was convinced that they could be recycled, she Googled it when we were having the conversation. Google told her that plastic bags are recyclable, I said Not around here they're not! I found it on the council website, she had thought she was doing a good job of recycling until then.

TY,  I see you've found the weekly thread, I put a link on the other one for you before realising you'd posted here.  :)

Does the dustman really rumble around your dustbin to check,  that really surprises me, the cheek of it, they must waste more time checking than collecting in my opinion, 1 mistake?,,  I do double check on labels if I can, if I can read them,  my everyday bin  usually contains more plastic packaging  than anything else.

Viktoria,  pleased your plans are all coming  together for you, you will feel the bees knees as they say.

They do open lids, and so may well see the latest rubbish at the top,the fact that they can not turn our bins round so the handles face out as we are instructed to do ,it being easier for them , beggars belief !
I have assisted collection and had a bay into my garden  from  the side lane
made ,so they don’t have to come into my garden ,good when I had the dog ahd so much easier for the team - but no, they turn them round so I have to go into the lane to put rubbish in,or turn them round myself .
Honestly! I make a point of thanking them if I am in as I do appreciate that help.
I know my son is here but he too is paying Council tax  and is already 66,he might not be here every Friday ,Head Office is way down South so he is frequently away  on dustbin days ,calling at his sister’s whilst down there.
It is all or nothing ,so I am keeping all,!

Hope people are O.K.

Morning,
Just reading the dilemma over crisp packets.  My friend is a keen recycler and educated me some time back. Apparently crisp packets, bread bags etc. are classed as soft plastics and can be recycled but you have to keep them separate and take them to a special bin at larger supermarkets.  Some products have the instructions on the packaging, Aldi are particularly good. A bit of a faff but I'm sure the planet will appreciate our efforts.

We have a soft plastics weekly collection here,  the council have provided bags which last us 2-3 weeks and go out with the recycling.  We have a weekly recycling collection and 3 weekly rubbish collection, the rubbish bin for landfill has hardly anything in it.

Garden waste is collected 2 weekly for most of the year, just a break around Christmas and will cost around £73 from April.  I do let one of my neighbours add to it when there is space.

Our garden waste collection is quite expensive, sometimes we have to spread it over a week or two's loads at peak "Weed bashing time". Normal waste here is paper/card; and plastics, cans and bottles together. Tend to have v few crisp packs - and they often end up in general waste.
Just spent morning diving into the top drawer of one of my filing cabinets, Viktoria, trying to sort out what investments hide where.... Need to read / check date on all in onbe area first, set them out, then decide what can be thrown or shredded, and what has to go back, in order. Waste of a nice sunny day

The trouble with recycling is there are no universal rules, different local authorities have different rules. Your local authority website should list what you can and can’t recycle. We had three councils combine into one and there were variations between the three, fortunately they seemed to settle on ours for the new system. If I am uncertain about recycling anything, I  go their website, put in my road and check the list, fortunately all our bins are emptied on the same day.

It is difficult for me to get to an outside bin so keep my household bins in the garage, my very kind neighbours take  them in and out for me. Only the garden bin is outside, my neighbours share it, I pay £67 for that because they are so helpful  with the other bins., it used to be £40 but the charge went up several years ago. I have a large Leylandii hedge trimmed every year by a tree surgeon who shreds and disposes of those trimmings.

I’m all for recycling but I do feel sorry for people who live in some terraced houses and have to keep all their bins in front of their houses, it looks so unsightly. At least with bins we no longer have the problem of  seagulls ripping the bags and scattering the rubbish.

I shred as much  paper and thin cardboard as possible, that is collected by a friend and goes in her hot  composter.
Title: Re: Diary summary week ending 9th February 2025
Post by: Caw1 on Thursday 06 February 25 13:40 GMT (UK)
Our area don’t appear to make soft plastics as an option for us. Tbh I didn’t realise that you could take them to designated places either. I will now seek them out.

Our collections for recycling and rubbish are alternate weeks. We rarely have rubbish to throw out so that tends to be once a month. Our food waste bins is every week..
We don’t use a garden waste bin as most of it goes onto the compost heaps or to our local recycle centre.

I used to throw virtually all uncooked food scraps onto our compost heap… but since our elderly neighbour (93) is feeding the local rat population with food spread along his front window sills, path by his front door we were advised by the pest control people not to put anything that will encourage them further..
It’s been a nightmare as he doesn’t listen to them at all and spreads food with gay abandon around 4 pm in the afternoon… for the birds! 😱.

I’m all for birds and love seeing them but not many around at that time of the day! We’ve even taken our bird feeders down on their advice..

Finally, after a frosty foggy morning the sun has burnt through and it’s a clear blue sky.. long may it last.

Well despite the weather I’ve more books to sort out as we have three floor to ceiling bookcases on our landing and I need to ‘deselect some’  ( 3 crates already taken to the local library and Sally Army) decorator coming in a couple of weeks time so it’s getting pressing now.
I’m a bit of a book hoarder so finding it hard to do.. many inherited from my parents and although many not my taste can’t bear to get rid of them.. lots re WWII and I’m sure my father wouldn’t approve! Hey ho just got to get on with it..

Have a good afternoon

Hello again

Spent a lovely day with my niece yesterday (and the twins after pre-school) and was invited to stay for evening meal (homemade fish and chips).  Darcy did the table plan and I was to sit between both the girls which was fun (ish)!  Went to Matalan in afternoon where I returned a jumper I'd ordered online for a refund.  Have gone down 2 dress sizes in last 2/3 years and now a size 14. According to their website size Medium was for sizes 14-16 so that was what I ordered.  However, it was huge and not acceptable.  Couldn't check the smaller size as my local store only now has all their summer stock displayed (it's only February for heavens sake). Bought both the girls a small toy which they played with for the rest of the day.

The girls are doing well in their new Saturday classes (Macy ballet and Darcy football).   The ballet class is having a show in July which Macy is very excited about (obviously has no conception of how far away that is) and Darcy has been asked to play for their infants team which is called Wildcats - seems appropriate as surname is Wilder!  Attach a photo taken after their respective lessons last Saturday - both look tired, bless them.   They have long hair which was suitably tied up for their activities so not the best photo of them.

As to the bins - I live in a block of 10 flats and we have a large black one for general waste, a large blue one for recycling, 2 small brown ones for garden waste (leaves, grass cuttings, etc.) which are emptied 2 weekly.  We also have a small red one for glass which is emptied periodically.  It seems that for next financial year we are going to be charged £75 per annum for emptying the brown bins.

Best wishes to all.

Annette

Lovely to see the “ Two little miracles” again ,thanks .

Our bins -
Two each week are emptied so two  different waggons, on same day.
Black, non recyclable .
Green, paper and card.
Blue,tins ,plastic and glass .
Brown, food waste and foliage ,grass mowings etc.

My Council tax , for all services is £119 per month.

Our roads are in a terrible mess and poorly kept however many are old Victorian setted ones just asphalted over.
The traffic must be over 200 times what is was but so much farmland gone under bricks and mortar and  the infrastructure  can’t cope but new houses in high price brackets bring in revenue ,never mind if the little town can’t take
it .After all it is Ramsbottom ,not in Bury where decisions about these things are taken , “ not in my borough “

What beautiful children Annette, you can see the one who is into dancing by her dress, they are growing up quickly.

We have a green bin everyday bin
Blue for paper, bottles,  some plastic containers and the like
Brown compost bin, costs us £80    a year, started last April
Small green compost bin for food, we can put that in small recycling bags or strangely enough, bread bags, it really is surprising how this gets filled up, mainly with peelings although I sometime cook potatoes in their skins, have you noticed how much outside waste there is with cauliflower , not sure if the green outside can be cooked as greens, I try not to waste food.
.
What subjects we tackle, will be slugs again next !!!!

For us it's a black bin, emptied every 3 weeks, a recycling box for paper, cardboard and glass, a recycling bag for plastic and a small blue bin for food scraps.  These last three are emptied every week.  You are asked to put odd things like batteries in a clear plastic bag in the recycling box, likewise small electronic devices. Our food waste goes into our own compost bin along with small amounts of garden rubbish, so we don't actually use the blue bin.  You can rent a green waste bin for large amounts of garden rubbish, but I don't know how much that costs.

We have a very good "dump" nearby and take large things there.  They have a "shop" which sells articles that people have dumped, even though they are useable.  You'd be surprised what turns up there!  Have you ever watched that TV series where articles from a dump are recycled into (mainly ridiculous) pieces of furniture and sold, bringing in a good return for the person who dumped them?  I can't imagine who buys them.

It's been a very dull, damp miserable day here in Dublin today.
For us, there's a black bin for non recyclable waste, a green bin for paper, cardboard and plastic, and a smaller brown bin for food and garden waste. The black bin is collected every 2nd week, and the other 2 on the alternate week.

Weather in IOM very similar to Dublin.

I live in a terrace of Victorian town houses, mostly converted to flats. There isn't enough room for every flat to have multiple bins.
So we have a series of large communal wheely bins - paper, cardboard, glass, tins, plastic bottles.
Problem is, they are all in the back lane, which is accessed by 9 concrete steps
And, after every collection the bins get further away.

Not good when I use a walker!
If the bins remain near my back gate, I can hobble to them.

Well, here’s me trying to post photographs of our  new - ish baby .Lily, and knew really that is not allowed, problem solved.

A cold rainy day here.
Did a big shop and a delivery on Monday too so all stocked  up.
Had Ratatouille for tea ,well a version, but lots of peppers, courgettes, onions
no aubergines available but they were not missed .
Had cheesy rolls with it.

Our Yorkshire Farm is on again  renovating  nearby derelict farmhouse - Auntie John’s..Ananda looks ill, drawn and thin.
Sad ,they seemed a good solid couple too but something has changed.

Well , kitchen tidy ,did my bedroom today -  a big tidy really, this house is nothing like as dirty as the old house used to get ,much further from any busy roads, much easier but how I miss the space and storage .
Well shed installed, seems so big and how  I shall  mis my lovely sunny patio
but I will get used to it .
I find nowadays I get very stressed about not much at all , strange isn’t it .
Not  me really.
Got a letter today from the Eye clinic at Rochdale , after the wrong prescription for my heart at Fairfield Hospital Bury , it is not forvglaucoma patients !- nor underactive  thyroid patients nor nor those who have had a recent heart attack! I was given it the next day.
Have been asked to make a formal complaint via PALS but Inam reluctant given the care I am getting .
It has however affected my eyes.
Back on drops which have to be ten times a day ,and another every two hours,it says nothing about getting some sleep ———-however the ones ten times a day are only for eight weeks ——- yippee.

Oh dear, but I am not in a war zone, not poverty stricken ,have good children and grandchildren ,lovely great grandchildren .

Well another week in the offing ,they do fly by.
Hope you are all warm and feel safe,I know there are many with health issues. We are stoics really ,our generation generally are.

Cheerio. Got a good boom to read ,perhaps I have mentioned , it about Winchester Cathedral,
Got one from the bookstall at  the  Supermarket Jo Brand’s  biography .
I feel I have read it many years ago but will find out won’t I.
I can’t see me reading with so many times a day —-
Cheerio, Viktoria.

Hello again
I do enjoy your news Viktoria , you are such a busy bee and cram so much into a day
I think tonight's Yorkshire farm was a repeat, I have always enjoyed  the programme which such lovely children .
I understand  you get stressed, feel the some sometimes,  my husband doesn't get stressed much at all, we are all made differently,  we are what we are.
I have a mystery, putting  things away today I found in a sandwich poly bag a gold  tooth, neither of us has ever had a gold tooth,  don't know anyone who owns one.
Had a lovely visit with my cousin, she has such a shrill voice I am sure my neighbours could hear her, I asked her to look in my glass cabinet to take anything  she wanted , she took a gold crystal boat, her dad worked on the lifeboats,  then my husband reminded me it was his, ooops!!, I was sure it was bought for me, he doesn't mind fortunately.

LM.,

I’m not sure how much good it does when you make a formal complaint Viktoria.

I had  to make a number of official complaints through  PALS after three months in hospital, they included being left for ten hours without water when I was supposed to to be drinking  a lot of fluids because of a serious infection, I was called a liar my by a health care assistant when I complained and begged for water in the morning.  Also a nurse tried to force me to take tablets meant for another patient, she had not checked my wrist band, the person they were meant for was in a different ward. That could have been disastrous . I won’t bore you with the rest of my complaints.

Yes,many mistakes are made ,when Manchester Arndake Centre was blown up,a young expectant Mum was very seriously injured and her unborn baby was at serious risk, I had undergone a really big operation .
It was very hot weather ,I had a private room because we were in BUPA, from my husband’s job.
Told to drink at least 2 litres of water a day ,I had none for  36 hours ,each person who entered my room promised they would bring some iced water fir my empty bedside jug —- no one did, so I developed a severe urinary tract infection which was appalling ,went into kidney infection - I was off work three months.
I understood every one was busy but so many failing to do a simple job that was vital for a good recovery .
Everyone gets fresh water each morning.
I was hooked up to tubes and catheters and monitors so could do nothing for myself .

Sons have worked hard all day adapting the new shed for the scooter ,the entrance needed some support, the threshold will bear the brunt of the weight
so a little ramp to spread the stress.I ought to have asked for that adaptation .
Well another week starts tomorrow,I am at the Clinic ,at noon,  and  must sort out a hairdo l I always hate it when it is done but at the moment my medication is really taking it’s toll - limp yet very brittle, the hoover bag is always full of my hair !
Well goodnight all, hope you are all safe ,if not well then some improvement .

Night night .
Viktoria.
