Title: Strasenburg of Germany
Post by: RICHIE on Saturday 01 February 25 16:37 GMT (UK)
Hi,
I'm looking to trace the ancestry of Frederick Charles Strasenburg born Germany circa 1790 . He was a mariner and moved to North Leith Scotland where he married Jean Brown in 1807. It would be wonderful if i could find out anything of his birthplace in Germany and parentage. There is evidence of the Strasenburg family name in Brandenburg but i don't know of any connection to Frederick.
regards
Richie

Did he die in Scotland?  I'm not seeing a death on SP

If he did & if it was 1855 onwards - downloading his death cert may possibly give you both parents names & mothers maiden name

Hi CaroleW
I can find the death of Jean who died 1858 North Leith but nothing of Frederick . I have found possible and i say possible parents ie George Friedrich Strasenburg and Anna Marie Brixen on Family Search . There are not too many Strasenburgs's of the right age group that i can find but i have no proof that these are his parents . I'm also wondering if Strasenburg is a jewish surname.

I can see deaths for 2 of his children - James in 1899 & Robert in 1878

Jane was head of household in 1851 so presumably Frederick died pre-1855.

The '41 Census has a Frederick, b 1787, Jane born 1801 and refers to sons Robert and James - address Coupar Street.
Can only view transcript which has Frederick's PoB as Scotland? Also, Jane's YoB doesn't fit an 1807 marriage?.

Also spotted an item in the Caledonian Mercury, 2 Jun 1821 - have checked Historical Directories but no mention.

Hi,
Thats interesting that it has his place of birth as Scotland . I have got his marriage certificate which indicates that his wife's ie Jean's parents being John Brown and Isabella Scott but i can find no record of her birth . They also had a son Frederick Strasenburg my grt grt grt grandfather born July 25th 1824. Her was Captain of a brig called Lawsons . He was swept overboard as the vessel headed in to a storm having set sail from cronstadt sept 25th 1862.

I'd spotted Lawsons/Strasenburgh checking Lloyd's register.

Was there a daughter Jane? FindMyPast has the marriage of a Jane Strasonburgh/Strasenburgh, 17 Feb 1847, address, 126 Rose Street, St George's, Edinburgh and William Renton, warehouse keeper, same address. Bride's father Frederick Strasonburgh/Strasenburgh, ship's carpenter.

I think the 1862 death may be a son rather than Frederick snr.  The 1851 transcript has Jane as head of household but you would need to view the actual image to determine whether she is shown as a widow

Does the 1858 death cert for Jane show her as a widow?

Hi , yes it was Frederick the son who died at sea . They may well have had a daughter named Jane .

Was Frederick snr a mariner - can't find an 1841 entry.

Jane's death in 1858 shows her as 68 mmn Scott.  Another death in 1858 Jane Brown Strasenburgh appears to be her granddaughter.  See my reply above re death cert/1851 entry

The Census transcript for Frederick in 1841 does not show occupation. His marriage entry 1807 describes him as "seaman".

Hi All
I have found the death of Frederick Strasenburg on Scotlands people . He is registered as Frederick Stransenburg , death October 21st 1844. He was living in Johnston Street North Leith at the time of death and his occupation was a Carpenter . Age was 63 , so birth was 1781 -- was in Scotland or Germany ?

A birth in 1781 makes more sense than one in 1791 followed by a marriage in 1807 at the age of 17 years?
