I'm trying to find background information on children who were listed as being Barnardo's Children and living in Diss at the time of the 1911 Census. There were six listed but one, a Gladys Nicholson, born 1898 in Clapham London, is a mystery to me. If anyone can offer any help in finding out about Gladys, or point me in the right direction, I would be most grateful. Thanks in advance.

Clapham came under Wandsworth RD. Freebmd have an 1898 birth for a Gladys Eva BG Nicholson - GRO online shows mmn Smith
Have you already ruled her out?
Have you looked for her on the 1901 census?

Gladys Eva Blanche Graham Nicholson, M quarter, 1898.

Thanks both for the replies. I have just been throught the info above. I don't think Gladys Eva is the same person but will keep this in mind. Would a solicitor's clerk have a daughter taken into a Barnardo's Home?

Have you found the family on the 1911 census
-
Hi Carole
Cannot locate them in 1911 or 1921 & no likely deaths. A possible marriage of her sister Margaret in 1927, but nothing other than that.
-
Her mother remarried in 1915 Greenwich to William J Rice. Gladys is with them in 1921.
-
Comberton - if you found them on the Ancestry 1921 - take a bow 👏👏
Wonderful 1921 transcription on Ancestry - as per the original image
Mother is Blanche Amy (fair enough)
Gladys is Gladys Eva Blanche - no surname - no age - no birthplace
Margaret is Graham Nicholson - step daughter
-
I got lucky Carole. On FindMyPast, I was looking at the marriage index for William J Rice and it offered me a 1921 hint that turned out to be the correct one. Only 3 people in the household.

Gladys Nicholson is on the 1911 Census in Diss Norfolk: RG14 PN11443 RD230 SD2 ED1 SN161. She is listed as a Barnardo's Child so will not be with her family.
-
This may be the mother on 1911 census as Blanche, widowed & a servant in Hampstead.

Gladys' sister on findagrave in Canada, 1975

The 1911 suggestion was in relation to the family found in 1901. If the girls were with those parents in 1911 it would rule that Gladys out
-
I wonder whether it's a coincidence that the Gladys Nicholson b Clapham living in Diss is living with a family surname Price - given that Amy Blanche Nicholson was shown as widowed in 1911 & remarried to a Price in 1915 (not b Norfolk)

Hello Norfolk Nigel...As Kloumann noted, her sister was sent as Louise - 1909 - Annie Macpherson -Dest: Stratford, Ont.
http://www.rootschat.com/links/01tmb/
Just wondering if you are a descendant of Louise, researching this family, or a group of other children?
There doesn't appear to be a death in that time frame for the father William Rumbold Nicholson...Nor a will? Might he have pulled a runner? Noted that his brother Frederick Rumbold Nicholson was also a solicitor in Battersea 1901, so perhaps he was clerking/apprenticing for him?
-
Beg pardon for my error... in 1911 census Lambeth, Stockwell, London, England- brother Frederick (says married) living or visiting with father Richard, both are also law "clerks".
adding: My notes from last night although not relevant to your search, shows how a father with a good job did not always mean their babies would be well-kept or even welcome later in life.
RE: brother Frederick from above- His wife Annie in 1911 with daughter Vera. (Daily work as a Charwoman, says married but listed as head of household) Not sure what happened to Annie's daughter Lillian Young. Hope she was not sent away as well...
Found a tree on Family search shows Vera's life but does not mention Lillian.
-
Frederick married a Lucy Louise Hopkins, Lambeth, 1920. She is 10 years younger than him.

Norfolk Nigel...Checking in...Was your query answered regarding Gladys? You had said you were looking for the Barnardo's Children in Diss, Norfolk. If you are publishing this elsewhere, be sure to note with help from Rootschat.
Note that Gladys & Dot Haxby are boarding with the Rice family, & are shown as "schooling at "Barnardo's Home, not living there. Your researchers on here found her numerous times and also pieced together some pretty vague clues! Well done all!
Mind you boarding could also mean a work placement as many very young children were acting as labourers & domestics in Canada.
I take it you are also looking at the other children also shown as boarding in other households, but schooling at Barnardo's in 1911
George & Ernest Wells with Robert Leathers & family
Jessie Colley & Mary Trevithick with Edward Reeve & family

Hi J. J.
Lilian Young was Fred's wife, Annies sister, NOT her daughter. born 1893, Mary Lilian. mmn Whatley.
She married a Wm Nash in 1918
-
Hello back, Kloumann
1901 FamSearch transcription had her as Fred's sister, not in-law. Saw that Annie's name was Young at marriage. Shouldn't assume, so... Thanks for looking it up & correcting my error.
adding: ( Was wondering how I missed her as claimed in the tree. See now that the tree owner attached the census but did not tag the source link to it in her details, so that it would show up as such.)

Thanks everyone for your replies and thoughts on Gladys. I cannot be positive that she is the Gladys E B G Nicholson referred to earlier. However I have found out quite a lot about the other 5 Diss Barnardo's children so I'm going to move on. Thanks again.
