Title: Free genealogy sites
Post by: olives on Tuesday 28 January 25 13:21 GMT (UK)
I’ve seen posts on here re genealogy sites which are free, but I’m looking for a simple one that I can set up but allows family members to view it (not edit or add anything).

Years ago there was a great site “Family Legends” but unfortunately that became outdated.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Try familysearch.org. It is free to register.

Family Search is free but open access which allows anyone to edit and tend to find correct information you put on gets corrupted.

What do people make of Wikitree it seems similar to Family Search but the do seem to make an effort for everything to have sources.

Note that many free sites will not allow you to control who sees your tree and other data.
Not what you want if you wish to put on line data which only your friends and family can see.
You may want to consider preparing your stuff on your home computer and putting it on something like Dropbox, iCloud, Google space etc and then giving your family read only access to it.

Tribal Pages is both free or paid for.  It is searchable the same as other paid for sites but  to see your  free tree  someone has to message you and ask to view it, if you want them to see it you message back with a pass word.

That sounds more like what I’m looking for, Jebber. Thanks.

Thanks Andrew C. I definitely wouldn’t want anyone dabbing with the data I’ve put on.

I've never understood the hierarchy on wikitree and gave up trying to offer corrections to a manager who openly admitted to making a real mess when combining dozens of online trees onto the site.
I'm constantly frustrated by the efforts of others to once again replicate the dozens of duplicate profiles I've merged multiple times on familysearch.

Tribalpages is a happy medium for simple tree hosting. It's in a quiet corner of the internet few seem to visit which in an ironic way is the best and worst part of the site. It's easy to use but the support is pretty poor if there are problems in my experience and the photo/word limit on the free version is a bit restrictive.

Tribal pages allows 50 photos on a free site, also 500 words per person. There are other ways of adding information to the site. I found that I soon wanted more room for photos and written information, I found it not expensive to upgrade.
