Hi
I am trying to find the birth of Ann Shetton, census's from after her marriage to James Jones on 18 May 1837 in Landenny in Monmouthshire show her as being born in Trellleck between 1818 and 1822.
So pretty young when marrying James. The problem I have there is no birth as I can see for Trelleck for an Ann Shetton. Then I noticed she was a widow.
I made a list of all the Ann's born in Trelleck between 1810 and 1822 so that I could try and match one of them marrying a man called Shetton but could not find any in the area, and with her age as suggested it could not have been that much further bac kin time to her second marriage to James.
Anyone know where I can look, I have Ancestry but not helped. Shetton does not seem to be a common surname and I have searched with variants on as well.
kind regards
Ian

Small point I read the burial year as 1837.
Is it not possible that Shetton was her former married name?

Indeed ColC thats what I thought, was why I was searching for her previous maariage to someone called Shetton and hopefully get her maiden name
-
Could this be Ann?
1841 Ragland Lower, Raglan, Llandenny
James JONES, 40 Farmer, Ann JONES 30 + 3 servants
If this is Ann, this would be born 1807-1811, the 1841 was rounded down to nearest 5.

Thanks ColC
For me that age sounds much better than the later census's in, as I was finding it difficult (but not impossible) for someone who was born 1818-1822 to be married twice by 1837. Maybe they just knocked 10 years of her age when she got older on the later Census's :) not unheard of

Isn't it possible that she was a minor and John Miles was her father?
-
Alas John Miles is the vicar I believe as he acted as one of the witnesses on all the marriages on the same page as theirs
-
Could it be Shelton?
Did they have any children?
MMN will be on GRO if so.
Also possible he married another Ann after 1841 Census.

Thomas Jones was the Rector (Vicar) according to their marriage. John Miles was probably a Church warden or similar

Is this the 1851?
Living in Trelleck?

Sorry got to log out as late here in OZ.
EDIT 1840 Marriage Reg for Ann Stockham/James Jones on same page
-
Trish thank you
They had as far as I know 7 children and Jones is a common surname. However their daughter Susan was the only one for Monmouth for the right year.
So I checked GRO as you so kindly suggested
And prior to this I had made a list of all the Ann's born in Trelleck between 1810 and 1822
Well the mothers maiden name was Stockham and blow me over she was on my list
Ann Stockham 1820 Trelleck
Thank you :D
Can now see if I can find her first marriage to Mr Shetton and whether they had any kids as the would be 1/2 rellies
Thank you again for your help

Marriage to Ann Stockham was 1840 (FreeBMD)
Sorry have to log out soon.
Why did you think that the 1837 Marriage was the right one?

Back tomorrow.
Trish :)

another birth reg
James Jones jun qtr 1841 Monmouth vol 26 pg 92 mmn Stockham
Only likely baptism to the couple I can see is
22 Aug 1844 Emma daughter of James, labourer, and Ann Jones of Trelleck.
This is a non-conformist baptism in Siloam Bible Christian church so the marriage could be in a register office/registrar attended and unlikely to be online.
As the maiden name from the birth registrations is Stockham, and the marriage reg shows her as Stockham, there won't be an earlier marriage, unless she married a Stockham.

I'm a bit confused
Are we interested in James Jones & Ann previously Shetton nee ?? who married in 1837
Or James Jones and Ann Stockham who married in 1840
-
You are not the only one confused.
I asked why op (Ian) thought that was the right marriage 1837.
Hopefully they will answer.
If Susan was an ancestor then her mother was Ann Stockham who had never been married before.
I also don't think that 1841 Census is James/Ann.
As there is a Marriage;
Ann TIPPINS
James JONES
12 Mar 1840, St James, Llandenny********
James was 44, Bachelor, Farmer****
Ann was 32 a Spinster
(Both Fathers are named)

Hopefully Ian will reply soon :)
-
So sorry for the delay in replying, been very busy
The reason for thinking the marriage was to Ann Shetton was at the time the only one I could find. But thankfully with your help it was obviously the wrong one.
And the correct one is to Ann Stockham in 1840 as mother maiden name tallies with their children
I am very thankful for your help on this it has really helped
Ian
