Title: West Smithfield Churches
Post by: Chris Nilsen on Saturday 25 January 25 05:28 GMT (UK)
Hello Rootscatters,
I am seeking some local knowledge about the place known as 'West Smithfield' in London.
I have an ancestor who was a convict sent to New South Wales in 1828.
His convict records give his 'Native Place' as 'West Smithfield' or just 'Smithfield'.
I would like to find his baptism record (c1810), but I am not sure what churches I should be searching.
I think I found St Bartholomew the Great & St Bartholomew the Less are located in West Smithfield.
Are there other churches that might be found in West Smithfield that I should be searching in?
Any advice about records from West Smithfield is appreciated.
Regards,
Chris.
Adelaide, Australia.

Chris

There are a number of churches in West Smithfield so it might be easier to find what you are looking for if you knew what the parish was otherwise it's like looking for a needle in a haystack. This is a map from 1862 which might give you an idea of how big the area is:

I'm sure if you shared your ancestors details on here someone might be able to find a baptism

I am looking into an ancestor named Robert Humphries who in 1827 was transported to Australia.
His convict record states he was born in West Smithfield in 1810.
