Welcome to RootsChat!
I can't find parents for John, but there are trees online together with photographs of the family. You would need to check, but it is possible John married an Elizabeth Campbell who travelled with her Father Duncan to Canada, and is listed on the Canadian Immigrant Record of 1818 when families travelled aboard the Brig "Curlew! to Montreal. She would have been about 8 years old having been born in1810. There were 9 children, and she died in 1858.

Yes I have that record for Elizabeth and she is my Great Great Grandmother who married John Wilkie 1839-06-18 in Walpole Ontario. Have done Ancestry and Living DNA but still nothing on John Wilkie born in Aberdeen Scotland 1812. Have two Scottish records for John Wilkie's parents. Robert Wilkie/Christian Paul and David Wilkie/Anne Brown neither are correct. Also in Walpole down the road from John is Robert Wilkie born in Fife, Scotland about 1799 and died 1867. Both families are in Chalmers Presbyterian Cemetery in Cheapside Haldimand Co. Ontario. Am wondering how they are related?

Hi, welcome to RootsChat.
Can you advise why you think he was born in Aberdeenshire?
Am I correct thinking he is the John Wilkie (Walkie) in the 1851 Census in Haldimand, eldest son James. He gives his age as 41 along with his wife Elizabeth.
If they are following Scottish naming tradition, his father should be James.

Family story? Not sure no real birth documentation which I am trying to find for John Wilkie. All CDN census say Scotland. Good point. On Robert Wilkie's grave stone in Chalmers Cemetery a native of Fifeshire, Scotland. Johns' stone is buried in the soil and no longer readable.

David, I have done Ancestry DNA and LIving DNA. LIving DNA has come back to show I am linked to Aberdeenshire. Thanks for your help.

Roberta,
Hi, I would not be too fixed on Aberdeenshire, there was quite a lot of movement between Aberdeenshire and Fife in the 1700’s and 1800’s I have several people in my tree who did this, so it could easily be John’s parents who came from Aberdeenshire.

If you look at the death record for Grace Wilkie born at Haldimand County 1846 you see her parents listed as John Wilkie and Elizabeth Campbell (both from Scotland). There are also records for Grace's siblings Agnes, Margaret and Jane.

I don't see a wedding on Scottish SP for that couple. Perhaps they married in Canada.

Yes they married 18 June 1839 in Walpole. Having nothing further back then that. Any additional help with birth parents would be great. Thanks

Thanks David. Am sure John's parents are from Aberdeenshire would love to know who they are. Any possibilities you have please send them to me. Thank you so much

Roberta,
Hi, as others have indicated the more known information the better.
As you probably know, when you get this far back it is very much a jigsaw puzzle.
If I have it correct, in the 1851 census you have
John Wilkie, 41
Elizabeth Wilkie, wife
James, 12
Margaret, 9
Agnes, 9
Jane, 7
Grace, 5
Catherine, 3
It is slightly complicated by the two girls who appear to be twins, but by naming tradition we should probably have his father and mother as James and Agnes, and her mother as Margaret. This gives us Campbell's to look at and look for further family names, which might give pointers to his family names.
Is there any more information on the marriage you have?
I notice that in 1871, he is widower? He seems to have lost a couple of years. His real age? Or doesn't want to be old!
There are three possible John's in Fife in 1809 James and Isabel Jackson in Newburgh look interesting as they also have a daughter Grace.
It is worth noting that Wilkie is not that common a name in Aberdeenshire, particularly John. When searching on SP there is only one page of John Wilkie's in Aberdeenshire. There are many in Fife and Angus.
You may well already have done this, but it is very much worth building speculative trees, both for possibles John's and for any Aberdeenshire matches that make you think he or his family are from Aberdeenshire. I have on several occasions found people this way, particularly by building DNA match trees.
More than happy to try and help further.

Yes have done DNA tests with Living DNA and Ancestry. Both should be public. Have links back to John and am working on Elizabeth now. Can be viewed on Ancestry. Only other thing on the marriage certificate was a Robert Wilkie as a witness. He also had a farm in Walpole a couple of lots from John. His gravestone said was a native of Fifeshire, Scotland. Have requested information from the library in Haldimand Co. but haven't heard anything back yet from them. Hoping to get more information about the Wilkie families. Will check out James and Isabel Jackson of Newburgh. Thanks!
-
Chescked out James and Isabel and don't think their John is the right one. Any other Wilkie's you can think of ?
-
Roberta,
Hi, ok, sorry to have pointed you in the wrong direction. Have you tried any speculative trees with any of the other John Wilkie's around the right time. Put them in Ancestry on their own with the dates in SP and see if anyone else has researched them and done the hard work? It would potentially be a simple way of eliminating them.

Yes have hired a couple to help me thru the Family Search Center at the Mormon Church. They are unable to find any links thru the Ancestry DNA public family trees. The Genealogy Dept. from Haldimand Co. Ontario has found evidence that John Wilkie is from Aberdeenshire. She has been out sick so is just getting back to working on him again. Will keep you posted. Thanks for your suggestions I certainly appreciate it. Is difficult for me to search people in Scotland as not familiar with the towns there. I am from the USA.
-
Roberta,
No worries, I have the same issue with tracking Canadian relatives.
If you could advise on the links to Aberdeenshire I am more than happy to try to assist as I am sure would be others on the site.
Do you have Duncan’s wife’s Christian name? Every little helps.
Have you not managed any links on your DNA at all?
Most of mine are out of the Scotland but I can usually track them back to at least a rough area.

Hi,
Have you seen that Robert may have left a will? The is one that may be him?

May be worth getting it looked at?

I wonder if you've noted the John Wilkie born on 13 Dec 1813 at Abdie, Fife. (Not Aberdeen, I know.) His parents I think were James Wilkie, mason, in the parish of Newburgh, Fife, and Janet Kempie of the parish of Abdie, Fife who married on 8 July 1811 in Newburgh. Online there is an Excel file which appears to include this family who were buried in Abdie Churchyard. Janet is named as Janet Kemp. The gravestone was erected by son David Wilkie (tailor, unmarried) who died on 27 Sep 1886 at Mason Street, Newburgh aged 67. I'm sorry I can't find an Aberdeenshire connection to this family, unless further back in time.

Have managed DNA links but not past John Wilkie. Yes found the will for Robert. Worked on him last evening and think his parents are Thomas Wilkie and Margaret Storor (Storrar/) Married 1787 Ceres, Fife. Thomas was baptized 19, Oct. 1760 Cupar, Fife. His father is listed as John but no mother on the document. Still not sure how Robert and my John Wilkie are related. Ruled out 4 possibilities last night and have John 8 Dec. 1813 Abdie, Fife left! No wife mentioned on Elizabeth Campbell's Baptism just father, Duncan. Thanks for your help will keep you posted on anything I find!

The John Wilkie 8 Dec. 1812 Abdie, Fife Scotland died in Glasgow 1892. So this rules out this John. Any others you want me to look at? Thank you for the suggestions!
