Hi,
I am searching for any information on an Alexander Angus who died aged 72, roadside in Whitechapel in 1793 pls. I know he married Mary Clarke in 1760 at St Mary at Hill in London and they had a number of children together. I believe his occupation was a victualler and he lived in the Stepney, Wapping Miniories area.
There is information of an Alexander Angus who was born in Scotland in 1721 in Edinburgh son of Thomas Angus, but I have recently found that an Alexander Angus died at a mere 25days old and was the son of Thomas from Edinburgh.
I am hoping that someone could pls assist me in locating the correct birth date and location for the Alexander Angus who died in 1793. Interestingly there is no records of him between 1721-1760. Thanks

Have you got a full list of his children. It might be possible to work out potential parents from names of children. I have found six but there are gaps, so possibly some more. The baptism of John on 18 Jul 1779 at St George in the East, gives residence as Betts Street and confirms occupation as victualler.

Hi
Thank you for the update.
His children were
Mary Angus 1760-1789
James Angus 1765-1837
George Angus 1768-
Agnes Angus 1787-1805.
Thanks

Sorry I missed John

I found a William as well bapt 20 May 1770, father occupation victualler residence Old Gravel lane (early children also in Old Gravel Lane). Are you sure of Agnes's date, that would mean mary was giving birth over a 27 year time period. Not impossible, but it would make her barely 20 at marriage.
But it would be nice to confirm Agnes as I have found a baptism of an Alexander Angus in Perthshire in 1723 s/o William and Agnes. Can't find this Alexander in Perthshire later. Age at death is only as good as the informant knows, or Alexander from Perthshire might have been baptised at 1 or 2 years old.

Agnes is a false lead, looked again she was born in Manchester please accept my apologies and disregard. I think you are right given the names

Thank you v much

I wonder when and why he came to London.
He was a bachelor when he married aged about 39, seems a bit late in life. I wonder if he had been in the military and ended up in London when his term was up. Or a seaman.

Hi
Yes it does seem likely. I discounted the Edinburgh Alexander son of Thomas born 1721 as I found that he died 25d old.
If he was employed as a victualler serving alcohol to ships I wondered if he was linked to the Navy.

I know he married Mary Clarke in 1760 at St Mary at Hill in London
The marriage was by licence, so what does the allegation/bond say about him?

Are there two Alexander Anguses in London at the same time ???
An Alexander Angus married a Mary Cook in Southwark in 1758. They had a son called Charles Jamesbaptised in Southwark later in 1758. No more children in Southwark. There is a burial for a Mary Angus in Southwark on 2 April 1760 no age mentioned.
Then your Alexander married Mary Clarke (as a bachelor) later that same month. As marriage was by licence, maybe the vicar didn't enquire to much as to whether he was a bachelor or a widower. Images of both marriage records are on Ancestry, some similarities in signatures, but not sure.
I can only find one burial for an Alexander - yours in 1793
Corrected
son was James
-
But I can't find a death for the first James.
James born 1765 was apprenticed in to James Moffat scalemaker of the Minories in 1779. James' father is recorded as Alexander Angus, gentleman of Betts Street,
-
William born 1770 was apprenticed to Benjamin Bunn, 7 Jul 1784, occ Lorimer. Alexander of St Botolph Aldgate, was recorded as a gentleman again
-
I've seen that there was two Alexander Angus one married in 1758 to a Mary Cook and one to Mary Clarke in 1760. I didn't think they were the same person.
Fascinating information on the sons. So if he was recorded as a victualler and then gentleman later, could this indicate a military background.

I have found an Alexander Angus born 1722, son of James Angus from Perthshire. Interestingly Alexanders eldest son was called James.

Still searching, does anyone know of an explanation for 30 years of no records pls?
Between 1721-1760, no marriage, birth of children etc. I've even been checking old Jacobite records in case he was transported somewhere and returned after punishment?
