According to a local paper here in England, Cornelius McGee, a Seaman from North Shields, Northumberland, was accidentally drowned at sea (25 June 1941) and was buried by the Catholic Sailors’ Club in Montreal.
Ancestry throws up a hint in its ‘Canada, Newspapers.com Obituary Index’, and I think there was something published in The Gazette dated 5 July 1941.
Could anyone with access to that database be kind enough to let me know whether the article said anything further about his death (eg what ship he was serving on) and where he was buried?
(Regarding the burial, I’ve tried the database for Cimetiere Notre Dame de Nieges and the search facility returns ‘McGee alias C Cornelius W’ buried 4 July 1941. This must surely be him, given the date, but he was born plain ‘Cornelius McGee so I’m not sure what those other letters in his name refer to!)
Many thanks. :)

There are several newspaper reports about your Cornelius, seems he was in trouble quite a lot. Attached a small article dated 1942 about his brother John that mentions him

Many thanks for taking the trouble to compile and post all that information for me!
Funnily enough I had just been looking at the 1911 Census to flesh out the family a bit – having had my curiosity raised when I wanted to know what had happened to Cornelius.
It was odd her children had the surname Holland and yet Cornelius's birth was registered as McGee and he was baptised as such, but I guess they were just one of the many couples living a man and wife and varying the names that appeared in documents. As you point out, they married much later.
Thanks again. :)

Yes, cuttings can be such a great help.
I've been considering whether to subscribe to Ancestry's newspaper archive, or to the British Newspaper Archive. I'm leaning towards the latter, just because it covers an important local newspaper that appears not to be on Ancestry's list.
Many thanks again.
