Hello community,
does anyone have an idea?
It is about the parents of Caroline Watts
The birth register says:
Caroline Watts, b 23 Apr 1877
Father: Thomas Watts, sanitary pipe maker, 11 meadow work, Rawmarsh
Mother: Jane Watts, late Black, formerly Roebuck.
Bapt 1 Sep 1880, Rawmarsh, St Mary The Virgin, Yorkshire (West Riding) (parents: Thomas Watts (occup: burner), Sarah Jane Watts). Her siblings have been bapt the same day.
According to census 1861, Thomas (born 27 Mar 1842) (occup: brick maker) lives with his mother Ann and his stepfather in Chesterfield Maynards Row.
Acc. to census 1871, Thomas (occup: sanitary pipe maker) lives with his wife Sarah Jane (21yrs, b in Worsbro, Yorks)and their first daughter Annie at 98 Meadow work, Rawmarsh.
Acc. to census 1881, Thomas (occup: brick maker) lives with his wife Sarah Jane (31yrs, b in Worsbro, Yorks), Caroline and further children in Rawmarsh, 11 meadow work.
Acc. to census 1891, Thomas (occup: brick maker) lives with his wife Sarah Jane (41yrs, b in Barnsley, Yorks), Caroline and further children in Northowram, 64 Clive Street.
There is a register entry of a marriage in 3rd quarter 1866 Auckland, Durham for Henry Black and Sarah J Roebuck (certificate is ordered).
There is a register entry of a marriage on Apr 26, 1880 (Sheffield, Holy Trinity, Wicker, Yorkshire) Thomas Watts, 38 years old, Bachelor, Sarah Jane Black (father: George Roebuck), 29 years old, widow, Residence Wicker Parish (both).
There is a Sarah Jane Roebuck, b November 1849 in Worsbrough, Barnsley, Yorkshire. In 1861 she lives at St Wilfred's Place, Bishop Auckland, Durham.
I don't have any further information at the moment.
Do these pieces of the puzzle fit together?
Thank you for your kind support

Looking at the information about Sarah Jane Watts in the 1881 and 1891 census I wonder if this is her in the 1851 census in Rawmarsh.

And this family are in Bishop Auckland in the 1861 census with more children! The mother's maiden name should be straightforward to work out.

The geography certainly matches the information you already have.

Thank you, William
This is "my Sarah Jane" up until now. Her MMN is Oldfield.

There is a Henry Black in the 1861 census b 1844 Darlington, recorded as 17 years old and a blacksmith living in Shildon who is a potential candidate for the first husband. I cannot see him in the 1871 census. It will be interesting to see what the marriage cert. says.

I see Thomas and Sarah didn;t marry until 1880, although together on 1871. Also can't see any Black - Roebuck children. I wonder whether the marriage stood (Sarah was very young in 1866) or if Henry abandoned Sarah fairly promptly afterwards

That's what I thought as well.
There is John Henry Black, born in 1866, I ve mentioned in my first posting. Couldn't find him in UK GRO, only in familysearch.

No sign of both Henry and John Henry after 1866.

There is a birth registration for a John Henry Roebuck Jul -Sep 1866 Auckland RD. No mmn is showing on GRO. I note the marriage was in the same quarter. So it could have been birth before the marriage and baptism as Black after marriage.

I think John Henry Black is with his grandmother in 1871 but is recorded as her son. Might his "brother" be his father?

The 1891 census is clearer. Living at Shotton Colliery:
John H Black 24 Coal Miner S b Shildon
Mary A Black Grandmother 71 Wid b Darlington

Perfect!
I'd say, in 1871 Mary is the grandmother, (John) Henry, 24yrs, her son, John Henry, 4 yrs, his son. Looks like they ve left his wife/his mum. Maybe Sarah Jane.

There is a birth registration for a John Henry Roebuck Jul -Sep 1866 Auckland RD...
Great job!!! Very likely.
Thank you

Thomas Watts and Sarah Jane had a few children from 1870 onwards. All children bore the surname Watts. In GRO, the MMN is Roebuck.
What was the surname given to children born out of wedlock to parents living together during this time? Is the father's name conceivable?
e.g.:
Annie Watts
Jul 1870 • Halifax, Yorkshire
GRO: WATTS, ANNIE ROEBUCK
GRO Reference: 1870 S Quarter in HALIFAX Volume 09A Page 509
Alice Watts (April 1872, Rawmarsh), Caroline Watts (b 23 Apr 1877, 11 Meadow Works, Rawmarsh)
All of their children so far have been bapt on Sep 1 1880, Rawmarsh, St Mary The Virgin (parents: Thomas Watts (occup: burner), Sarah Jane Watts).

Some context: Rawmarsh in 1890. Meadow Works in the NE corner, on Claypit Lane. The potteries used a suitable clay which is found close to coal deposits.
