Title: Find a birth record for Mary Ann Conner in East London
Post by: ValCharlie on Friday 03 January 25 11:54 GMT (UK)
I am so confused by parishes etc in East London! Hopefully someone can help.

I am trying to find a birth record for a Mary Ann Conner.
Her parents George Conner and Mary Ann Smith married in Saint Leonard's Shoreditch on Nov 30th 1857.
There is a baptism record for St Matthew in Bethnal Green, May 9th (?) 1858 which is virtually illegible. It looks as if she was born in January 1858. I cannot read where her parents were living but someone who knows London better might be able to.

In the 1861 census the family is in Congleton, Cheshire and Mary Ann is aged 3. She has a younger brother Benjamin who is aged 1. Benjamin's birth was registered in Bethnal Green March 1/4 1859. This confirms mother Mary Ann's maiden name to be Smith.

The corner of the 1861 census record is missing so I cannot read where daughter Mary Ann was born. In 1871 she is in London with her grandparents, she is 13 and her birth place is recorded as Mile End.

Mary Ann emigrated to Canada & in a census there, records her birth date as January 25th 1862 but this isn't possible. If this is the same Mary Ann, she was 3 in 1861.
A Mary Ann Conner married a Samuel Calver in 1880 in Mile End Old Town. It is this Mary Ann who moved to Canada. In the 1881 census she is recorded as being 22, which gives either an early 1859 or late 1858 birth.

Basically I want to prove that this is the correct Mary Ann Conner so I either need her birth certificate which I ca get a pdf of instantly, or I can order her marriage certificate but I am in France and this is expensive - and it causes a delay - so finding her birth is easier. Any help appreciated!

It looks like the birth may not have been registered.

Thanks. I don't know London at all, so I don't even know where I should be looking. I am assuming Bethnal Green CRD. There's nothing. Is anywhere else likely, although I have tried many permutations and nothing is coming up.

It looks like you may have to get a copy of the marriage certificate to prove her father was George.

Good Morning
Here's the details of the marriage which was at St Benets Stepney Christmas Day 1880
Samuel Calver bach full mason 35 St Peters St son of Samuel mason
Mary Ann Connor spinster full  same address d of Geogre Connor water roofer
witnesses Walter and Sarah Pond.
All of them  signed their names.

I've never heard of a water roofer so I'm assuming it's a mistake and someone misheard or mistranscribed it.

From the 1881 census she was born 1859 in Bethnal Green .

Brother Benjamin seems to be baptised at St Leonard's Shoreditch 1.1.1860  16 Union Buildings.
They couple got married at St Leonards  30.11.1856  of 3 Hunt St so all the General area.
It all seems reasonable.

The two children are admitted to the Poplar Workhouse 26th March 1867
Mary Ann 8 years discharged 24.4.1867
Benjamin 7 years 2.7.1867   both to FGS which I'm assuming is the parish poor school  for orphans etc.
Benjamin marries St James the Less Bethnal Green 26.11.1878 and states his father George is deceased.Bride Georgina Arthorp minor, father Edward ,a placeman. They are both of 6 East St .Benjamin is a hair dresser. The witnesses are all Arthorps.

I'll see if I can find more

Looking at the baptism image of Mary Ann, appears she was baptised 7th May 1858, born 5th January 1858 abode (8 Lamford ? )

Thanks one and all. Since I originally posted this morning I had found the two children together in the workhouse, which sort of 'proved' that they were siblings, and now I have the marriage certificate, so the case is proven. Thank you very much. The story has a happy ending for Mary Ann. She and Samuel Calver emigrated to Alberta and she lived to a ripe old age.
Her brother Benjamin also went, some years later, to Canada and then on to California. His wife Georgiana seems however to have died in Essex. I am not sure why.
I still haven't found her birth record, I have searched the GRO index with numerous permutations.

It would appear that Benjamin and his wife were together until her death in 1936, he then sailed for Canada in 1936 aged 76. His address was Glencon, Kintshier Road, Thundersley, Essex.

He then sailed again from the UK aged 79 to the US in 1938, his address at the time 17, Woodlight Ave, High Rd,Vange, Essex

Hello again
Whilst I have your Conner attention, could you maybe help me with something else??
Mary Ann's mother. Also Mary Ann.
George Conner married Mary Ann Smith in St Leonard's, Shoreditch on Nov 30th 1856.
In 1861 census they are in Congleton in Cheshire with their two children Benjamin and Mary Ann (aged 3 & 1 respectively). I cannot find Mary Ann's birth still but am assuming Bethnal Green. Benjamin was born there in 1859.
In March 1867 both children are admitted to Poplar workhouse.
Father George remarries, as a widower, in Manchester in May 1867.
So, Mary Ann Conner, nee Smith, dies sometime between April 1861 and March 1867.
But where?
Again, I have tried various permutations of names - Mary, Maryann etc and Conner and Connor - but to no avail. the detail doesn't change the story, but I don't like loose ends!

FGS is, I think, Forest Gate School. https://www.workhouses.org.uk/ForestGateSD/

It was not unusual for births not to be registered in the earlier years of registration so it is likely that there is no registration for Mary Ann
