Title: CHARLES HENRY GRAY and ALICE BULLOCK
Post by: haney on Wednesday 01 January 25 21:21 GMT (UK)
Hi Everyone and a Very Happy New Year. I am just following up on my original enquiry into the above couple I made back in October 2023

https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=877349.msg7493313#msg7493313

Hope this link works!

In a nutshell the above couple adopted one of their 3 children from an indigenous woman it seems!  Now I am just following up on all the leads I can to hopefully find a connection.

From my original enquiry what was discovered (many thanks) was that

1) Charles H and Alice M GRAY were divorced in 1947.

2) One possible child of this marriage was a PETER FRANCIS ANDERSON 1945-2008.  I have just sent a request to Ryerson to find his notice in the paper to see if anything can be found to connect him to Alice M Gray/Bullock

From what I have been told yesterday Alice and Charles knew the woman that they adopted R.GRAY  from.  Another brother was mentioned as well, and I think it was he who told R.Gray about the indigenous heritage!  (Will collate more details on this though)

I looked through the Vic archives but I could not find anything relating to any neglected children/wards of the state etc, as this is around 1938!!  Not sure what records maybe available.

I would like to find George D. ANDERSON and Alice M. GRAY actually living together if possible (electoral rolls/rate books) from c 1946 to her death in 1989/and/or his in 1991.

His death is recorded in Bendigo 1991 and Alices (as GRAY) in Long Gully in 1989.

It doesn't look like Alice and George Anderson ever married, none that I could find anyway.

It would be interesting to see their timeline as it may help.

I've looked at cemindex, find a grave this morning for Anderson's George Daniel and son Peter Francis, no luck there

Also no newspaper entry for Alices Death/funeral/memorial.

It's a difficult one this research. ANYWAY any help/direction is very much appreciated.

Kindest regards Dianna

Hi Dianna,

You were given the link to the 2008 death notice of Peter Francis Anderson on your previous thread.
It is still available online to view here:

Hi Merlin
Thanks I realised I had seen that when I looked at the old thread.  Oh Dear need more sleep.  LOL

Anyway will see how I go finding more information on Alice M. GRAY'S movements, if she was actually living with that George ANDERSON. Thanks Dianna

Hi.

I hope I have understood your request outline correctly ;)

After a quick look around, I cannot see any indication of adoption  of Peter Frances.

Indications are that prior to the 1947 divorce Alice May BULLOCK EDIT GRAY had the child in her relationship with George Daniel Alexander ANDERSON.

George was with his wife Edna May (nee BOURNE) on the electoral Roll until 1943.

After that he is found in the Dunolly area while she remained ( probably) in Parkville.

The 1989 Death Certificate for Alice May GRAY would hold the details.

Sue

Edit. Apologies :o

Hi Sue
Thank you!  LOL I always cause confusion don't I.  I have just been told that the three children of Alice GRAY nee Bullock are R, GRAHAM and WILLIAM.

They are I think the 3 children mentioned in the newspaper article when she divorced CHARLES HENRY GRAY.

It is possible that the PETER FRANCIS Anderson was born c 1945-2008  I'm not 100% sure of this though.

As you say the death certificate of Alice and/or Charles Henry GRAY may prove interesting.

Who we believe was a adopted was the son R b c 1938.

So you say that George was with Edna up untill 1943.

CHARLES HENRY GRAY born 11/111914 at St. ARNAUD Vic.  He seems to have enlisted?? a couple of times in WW11 and was in the Militia 19-11-1936 (single then).  Father C H GRAY Nyhah Post office.  Charles died in 1988 in Daylesford Vic.  I didn't check yet if he remarried.

There are two newspaper reports in 1946 re the divorce.  I will try and get them again.

Thanks very much as usual.  Kind regards Dianna

Charles Henry's half brother George GRAY (born THOMPSON) and his wife Amy Elizabeth (nee HANKIN) were living at 18 O'Grady Street, Albert Park, between at least 1943 and 1949.

If George ANDERSON was also living in Albert Park before 1946 then why do you think he is the man from Dunolly?

Hi Debra
Thanks for that well here is another piece of puzzle but one generation back.

The father of the Charles Henry Gray I have been enquiring about (his son's anyway) well his father is also Charles Henry Gray b 1864-1952.  His wife was AMY ALICE COHEN c 1876-1923

She married a Thompson and then married Charles as a widow.  So that is where they come into the picture.

Thanks for that.  Kind regards Dianna

In reply to your query about the dates George Douglas and Edna May are together on the E. Roll

Together at these addresses.

1931 Main Street Bealiba (Dunolly)
1934 As Above
1937 High street Mary borough (Daylesford)
1943 58 Morrah Street  Parkville

!954, there is one Edna May ANDERSON at Parkville at a different address. No others of the surname.
Alice May GRAY is on the E Roll in Bendigo in 1980. Address 549 Napier Street White Hills.and she is buried at Bendigo Public Cemetry (1989)

There is another at White Hills surnamed GRAY, who has the same given names as one of the sons listed on the DC. ( W.)  The address is different.
He is with a female of the same surname .

George Daniel ANDERSON actually died at Woodend where in 1980,  Peter Francis ANDERSON lived.

Hi thanks for that Sue.  It's good to have the death certificate!  It may help down the track who knows.  So R is the "first born".  Who knows where this story will end up.  LOL.  Good to have the facts in order though.  Regards Dianna

So R is the "first born".

Yes, but outside the marriage if the informant has given his birthdate correctly.
 Marriage date 1937.

Hi All,
I am a descendant of Charles Henry Gray and Elizabeth Abbott - the parents of Charles Henry Gray and his wife Amy Cohen. There were 5 children of this marriage and my great grandfather was William Frederick Gray who married Helen Wall in Ballarat Victoria in 1926. They had 7 daughters of which my grandmother was one.
I am keen to hear from anyone in the USA who might have any information on this Charles Henry Gray - from information I am lead to believe he was born in Frankford, Philadelphia around 1821. He was a Hotel Keeper and emigrated from the USA - I am unclear on which year. There was conjecture in the family that he may have left a wife and family in the US.
thank you
