Post by: Macj99 on Tuesday 31 December 24 16:34 GMT (UK)
I am trying to identify the parents of Mary Grimwood born about 1767 In Wattisham, Suffolk, mother of Robert Grimwood (1787-1839) Mary married Thomas Everett in 1789 In Kersey, Suffolk and Roberts name then appears as Robert Grimwood Everett. I have looked at locations, patterns in families etc and still struggling as so many Grimwoods. Thomas and Mary went on and had several children which I am aware off. But would like to follow the Grimwood line back a bit more. any help, suggustions grateful for. many thanks

Where did you find Marys place of birth.

Could you please name their children and Roberts parents as it may help eliminate Marys baptism

FREEREG has the transcript of the marriage of Thos Everett to Mary Grimwood in 1789, 4th December. Marital statuses not given but both of Kersey. Witnesses Thos Sheercroft and John Parsons. Groom and witness 2 sign, others mark.

You may have found this already but a Robert Grimwade was baptised in 1776 in Kersey, son of Robert and Ann. No Mary Grimwade/Grimwood baptisms can be found c1760-1775 in Kersey but she may have been born elsewhere and the family moved to Kersey by 1776. You say your Mary Grimwood had a son Robert as well.

The will also mentions Thomas' brother Isaac Everett and Isaac's wife Elizabeth, although I doubt they would be connected to the Grimwood side. Will was witnessed by J P Leake and John Sharmen.

I have a rich seam of Grimwoods in my tree from the Thorpe Morieux, Hitcham & Brettenham areas.  My great-grandmother Emily Grimwood (born Brettenham 1848) was the second wife of Robert Pearl (born 1834, Hitcham).

Regards

I think this is what happens with a tricky query when the OP doesn't engage. The thread dies a death.

Are the other answers given on this thread any help to you or are you still after information

Yes, after all the info we are digging up so far on the known Grimwoods/Grimwades of Kersey and Layham could assist the OP further.

I since found a Robert Grimwade wed Ann Clark in Naughton, Suffolk in 1775, and that is not far from Kersey. A marriage license says he was single and aged 28, of Semer, and Ann was aged 30 of Naughton. So unlikely to be the parents of Mary Grimwood born c1767.

This Rob Grimwade who wed Ann Clarke in 1775 in Naughton are probably the same couple who had children in Kersey from 1776 onwards. Rob could have been an older brother or cousin of Mary born c1767 but it seems to be quite a common surname in Suffolk as said.

The witnesses to the 1789 marriage of Mary Grimwood in Kersey to Thos Everett may provide a clue. Witnesses Thos Sheercroft and John Parsons.

all the information so far has been useful, some new and some already have, still struggling to identify Mary Grimwoods parents. so many have different views on who the parents may be- so far have as possibles William & Mary of Wattisham- daughter Mary born 1767, names of children fit family names. there is also a Mary G born 1739/40 to a Dorcas Grimwood of Holbrook and a Mary g born 1749 Weststow to John and Alice grimwood though the latter 2 names do not fit named patterns

A William Grimwood wed Mary Syer on the 25th August 1767 in Buxhall. If it is the same couple, it means that Mary of Wattinsham was born and baptised before the parents married, if Mary was baptised 5th July 1767.

Also a Christopher Grimwood wed Margaret Syer in Hitcham in 1771 and a Ann Grimwood wed Giles Syer in 1754 in Hitcham, so does seem to be several Grimwood/Syer marriages over the years.
