William John Johnston married Agnes Scott in Ireland, abt 1820. They emigrated with at least 7 children to Kinloss, Bruce Co., Ontario abt 1842.
Hoping William John's obit would mention his living children in 1876, in particular his son William who is quite a mystery and had moved to Weston, Dunn Co., Wisconsin abt 1870. I think William John would have an obituary as he was a wealthy business man (I think). Agnes had predeceased him Dec 27, 1864 in Kinloss. This would be before son William's marriage and move to Wisconsin.
Thank you

I googled the obituary of William Johnston who died in 1876, and Trent Valley Archives came up and they have his obituary, so there was one. They also have some letters and other things. I have written to them but I don't know what their response time is. They seem to be located in Peterborough. They also have a file on the Johnston family but who knows which Johnston family that might be.

I have done further research on Trent Valley, Archives, and their records regarding the death of William Johnston in 1876. I am thinking he is a different William Johnston than the one I am looking for although he also died in 1876. He was a tailor in Peterborough.

Have you checked the local papers?
Bruce County Museum has digitized many and searchable. A search for William John Johnston gave some results but in 1911. I will try and search further when more time

Thank you mcadamsd. I checked the death in 1911 of William John Johnston but it is not the same family. My guy had parents William John Johnston and Mary ann Humphries, born and died in Ireland.
The family in Mildmay is also not the same family. I will look through the articles which will take me a while. thanks again for your help. Peggy

Querying this one Peggy.
The find a grave entry for William Johnston says he passed away 1875.
The inscription also shows Agnes Scott passed 1863 (not 1883 as listed on the entry)
Names Alexander 1834 - 1907
and children James F 1881 -1941 and Mary L aged 4 years.
Think you had sorted most of this side of the family. Just those two dates for William John and Agnes that slightly vary. ?

Yes the gravestone says William John died 1875 but I have his death certificate and it says Apr 27, 1876 in Kinloss. Wrong date on gravestone. I also have the death certificate of Agnes his wife and it says Dec 27, 1864. They did have a son Alexander born Aug 5, 1832 unverified who died Apr 7, 1907 unverified in Saltford.Dates are correct for James F. son of Alexander and I have 1876-1881 for Mary L., daughter of Alexander.
I could use the death of daughter William John's daughter Mary Mattison who possibly died Jan 1880 in Willowdale, Dickinson, Kansas to see if it mentions her brother William who I am pretty sure died between 1875 and 1880 in Weston, Dunn Co., Wisconsin but I can't prove that, either by death certificate or burial records or community history books or the Wisconsin Archives or Wisconsin court records. You see, her brother William had a son Alexander in 1876 who is with his step grandparents in 1880 (Mattias Henderson) and the only reason I can think of is that William and his second wife Mary Anne Olsen had both died between 1876 and 1880, while William could have died before Alexander's birth in Apr 1876. I looked for guardianship records to prove that but if the records existed, they don't now. William's first son William from William's first marriage to Margaret Henderson is also with Mattias in 1880 and I never find that son William again (age 10 in 1880)
The other sibling who died closest to William's possible death is James C. Johnston who died Oct 7, 1902 in Kincardine. I have his death certificate but not an obit.
