Hello,
I'm struggling to work out the forename on the first record here, from the 1841 Scotland census. My other research tells me it should be Mary, but it doesn't look like that at all. She would also be a widow, like the one below, so not sure why it would be different. Thank you.

It does look as though the 'M' has been added afterwards

I agree, it looks like "Head M". Can you see another "H" or "Head" on the page to confirm? The "H" looks quite distinctive.
