Ok so up to recently I had narrowed my Boulton ancestors down to one John Boulton b circa 1703 in Stoke on Trent, having come to this conclusion a few years ago before taking a break, geneology can be addictive but too much drives you insane so i needed the break.
Anyhow resuming a few weeks ago I'm now starting to doubt some of my earlier findings.
I know as fact
George Boulton (4th great grandfather)
bap March 1794 in Whitchurch Shropshire
mar Lydia Mountford (of Hanley Staffordshire) Nov 1814 in Norton in the Moors Staffordshire
bur 1865 (Caverswall per FindMyPast) or 1867 (reg Stoke on Trent per GRO)
Charles Boulton (5th great grandfather)
born Ighfield and bap Jan 1756 Whitchurch Shropshire
mar Mary Dunn (possibly of High Ercall) Dec 1785 in Whitchurch Shropshire
bur May 1806 Whitchurch Shropshire
But then begins my problem
Thomas Boulton (6th great grandfather)
bap ?????
mar Margaret Bishop (possibly of Whitchurch) Pattingham Staffs/Salop in Sept 1754 FACT
I'd always had Thomas as born Lane Delph Staffs bap May 1737 of John and Ann(a) because at the time he was the only "fit" and based primarily on all later family connections being in and around Hanley/Stoke.
I'm now thinking though it could equally be Thomas bap May 1734 in Newcastle under Lyme of Sacherverall and Anne, or Dec 1732 of Samuel and Anne
I've even considered the distances from each other of all the places Pattingham, Whitchurch, Newcastle and Stoke
Any local knowledge would be appreciated, specifically around work (would people have moved so much in the area at this time), and travel (how easy or otherwise to travel in the area)

Just to help with the death of George BOULTON, if you are sure of his year of birth - I think he is more likely the one who died registered at Stoke on Trent in Mar qtr 1867 aged 73 (born c1794).
The one died registered Cheadle (Caverswall was in the Cheadle Registration District) June qtr 1865 was aged 77 (born c1788).

Staffordshire Sentinel dated 9 March 1867
Deaths
On the 4th instant at New Street, Hanley, Mr. George Boulton, Cabinet maker age 73.
-
Sorry - still no help with the Thomas BOULTON dilemma.
However, I wish all baptisms were as informative as George and Lydia's son Titus (1833, Wesleyan), giving George's occupation (cabinet maker) and Lydia's parents' names (Thomas and Frances MOUNTFORD). :D

Re your question did people travel much then.
Short answer, yes, more than we would think.
I have a branch from Norfolk who bapt 2 of their children Stratford, Essex.

Hi, many many thanks for the help, especially re the gravestone, it confirms 1867 as being the death of my George Boulton.
Until your reply I'd only ever come across one such useful gravestone and that was in person in Leeds when I found the graves of my Great Grandparents William and Elizabeth (Elizabeth being the great grand daughter of George)
What now i find a challenge is just where was George's wife Lydia buried, she died in 1852, if not with her husband.
Once again, many many thanks

Lydia was buried 20 May 1852 Hanley St John (from FindMyPast) if she is the one with death registered Stoke on Trent. The age (52) is a bit out for someone married in 1814, but not by a lot.
-
Yes, Lydia's age in 1851 was given as 54, so the burial in 1852 at St John's Hanley is a little different, but not too much.
As you know, she was baptised 1 Feb 1795 (born 2 Jan 1795) at St John Hanley, parents Thomas and Frances MOUNTFORD.

Have you checked the Archives for Poor Law Records or Apprenticeship records.
1)
Adam, son of Charles and brother to George was a Cooper.
George was a Cabinet Maker.
2)
Check and see if the Will of Thomas Boulton 1798 of Madeley is your family.
3) When the first Thomas son of Charles and Mary was buried 1791 age 3 they are listed as paupers, perhaps they received some parish assistance. Ref:FindMyPast

Thanks again all for replies
Regards the Archives for Poor Law Records, are these available online to view, I can only find references to them being held locally and not digitised, although I can find most of the info I need without.
Some replies have caused further questions, on looking at the reference to Thomas that died aged 3, I can find no record of any such baptism around this time. I did find a further child buried aged 0 (John August 1799), again with no sign of any baptism.
Having read a few other threads re burials without baptisms people have suggested this would be the case with still born, but that they would rarely if at all be named, so I'm at a loss on these two.

So I've found a Thomas Boulton bap 1719 in Whitchurch, but that would make him 35 when he married (wife Margaret being 27)
Seems promising
Now to look for burials to see if they lend any further support to this
