GRO online shows mmn as Thomas.  You can use freebmd to look for a parental marriage

Have you looked for him on the 1911 census?

https://www.familysearch.org/search/collection/1921547

These are the areas included in the Pontypridd RD

https://www.ukbmd.org.uk/reg/districts/pontypridd.html

What name does he give for his father on his marriage cert?

Until now I haven't been able to find him in 1911 but I've just looked again and come across Albert & Elizabeth Evans at 6 Maindy Rd, Ton Pentre, Rhondda which is the town where he lived in 39. So this looks quite likely and something to explore.
I don't have a copy of his marriage cert.
Sorry if I've wasted your time.

No - you haven't wasted anybody's time.  Unfortunately Evans & Thomas are very common surnames in Wales so it may be easier if you downloaded a digital copy of his birth cert which will only cost £3 but be invaluable to your research

Go to
https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/Login.asp

Registration is free if you don't already have a login

Input the details of his birth - see below -& make sure you request a digital copy

Births Sept qtr 1907
EVANS    Lewis Glyndwr         Pontypridd    Vol 11a   Page 686

When you have his parents christian names you may then be able to find him on the 1911 census - but if not - just use this same post to give details & we can look for you

Thanks for your help. I have the digital copy now - parents Thomas Evans (Coal Miner) and Sarah Evans (formerly Thomas) of 22 Parry Street, Ton Ystradyfodwg (how is that pronounced?) (reg. 8/08/1907).
