Title: Hyde family - Winchcombe, Condicote, Blockely (Worcs)
Post by: baytree1970 on Monday 16 December 24 14:34 GMT (UK)
I'm trying to find evidence of Charles Hyde and wife Hannah from Winchcombe who had a daughter, Jane Hyde b.1794, who married William Gale of Ilmington, Warks, later of Loxley.

I suspect they are associated with Hyde families at Condicote and also at Gretton and Greet near Winchcombe but cannot find the smoking gun to confirm the connection.

If anyone can help find evidence of Charles and Hannah I'd be most grateful.

Thank you.

Have corrected my original post. Thanks.

Have you seen an image of the actual parish record? All I can find on line (goth on Ancestry and Family Search) is an image of the BT. There is a baptism of a Thomas Hyde in Winchcombe two years later. Parents Hercules and Susanna. Could a badly written "Hercules" on Jane's record be mistaken for "Charles" by the clerk making the transcript for the Bishop? Similarly Hannah / Susanna(h) could also be almost illegible and mistranscribed

It's clearly Charles & Hannah.

Edited: Oops, that's the BT. This is the PR (I hope):

I think in the register on Ancestry it is clearly Charles and Hannah. If this is the BT then I suppose it's possible whoever copied the PR got it wrong, but Hercules appears a couple of years later so I would guess it's not an error.

You have sent me the link to the BT NOT the actual Parish Register
The BT is a transcript, NOT the actual Parish Register. As i said earlier only the BT seems to be available on line.
Hercules and Susanna(h) nee Brook(e)s married the year before Jane's baptism and three years before the baptism of Thomas also at Winchcombe. Then there id another child at Winchcombe two years later, then they move to Stow on the Wold and have more children. Hercules died S o/t W in 1837,

That's strange. I used a program that's supposed to construct a sharing link from an Ancestry image (visible even if you don't have a subscription) but it gave the BT link even when used on the PR image. Here are direct links (if you do have a subscription)

I just did a normal search and came up with two results  for the baptism, but both led to the same BT image. Good to know that the PR is hiding in there somewhere.
And yes the PR does say Charles and Hannah. Curious because there is no sign of this couple anywhere else. A pity, the date of Jane's baptism fitted so well between Hercules' marriage and Hercules' son Thomas' baptism, also in Winchcombe. I have been trying to find marriages for Hercules' other children, to see if Jane pops up as a witness, but nothing so far.
Hercules and Susannah seem to have moved to Winchcombe after their marriage. If they were new in town and not well known, maybe the vicar or parish clerk or whoever recorded the baptism made a mistake. I believe these records were sometimes completed days after the event and Hercules is an unusual name.

The Hydes seem to have been concentrated in Condicote, Winchcombe, Blockley and Stow.

I have DNA matches who descend from the same Blockley Hydes, who in turn I believe descend from those in Condicote.

There is evidence from a will that the Winchcombe and Condicote clans were related.

What else can I do to try to find Charles and Hannah? They must have existed somewhere!
