Can anyone help me to find in the 1851 Census a John Beveridge and his ancestry
In the 1841 Census, in Newgate Street, St Andrews parish, Newcastle upon Tyne, lived a John Beveridge aged 48, possibly a “School M”, Mary Beveridge aged 48, George Beveridge aged 15 and Mary aged 8. All born in Northumberland. I believe John’s wife was formerly Mary Bell although I have yet to find their marriage, as the baptism of their son George on 30th April 1826 at St Andrews, Brunswick Place, Newcastle shows his name to be George Bell Beveridge. On George’s baptism record, John’s occupation is shown as a mason and not “school master”.
John appears to have died in Newcastle in 1857 therefore he should appear in the 1851 census but I cannot find him. Can anyone succeed where I have failed?
Using his and variations of his surname I searched for a birth / baptism of John Beveridge who was born in Northumberland around 1793. I could find only one, who was born in Morpeth, Northumberland on 6th February 1791 and baptised in Morpeth on 16th March 1792 to James and Margaret Beveridge. However, according to the Parish records, a John Beveridge, the son of a James Beveridge, was buried in Morpeth on 6th July 1795. A baptism of another son of James and Margaret named Edward in Morpeth on 14th July 1799 states that James is a native of Felton and a mason whilst Margaret’s maiden name was Wyatt, that she was a native of Shilbottle and that Edward was their 7th son.
Can anyone locate the John Beveridge (detailed in the 1841 census) in the 1851 census as this may give his place of birth. A second opinion on the conundrum of whether the Morpeth John Beveridge who died in 1795 is the same person as the one born in 1791 and if not, who is the one appearing in the 1841 census would be appreciated.

When George Beveridge the son married Elizabeth Caselaw in 1847 did his marriage certificate show an address and his father's name and occupation.

Might this be the 1857 death you refer to?

Oh, thankyou all so much. You are a clever lot.
Just like my Christmas lights that I got from the loft earlier, this is a tangled knot which I will leave until the morning to sort out.
My initial reaction is that there were 2 Beveridge families having children baptised in Morpeth.
thankyou, Peewee

According to Ward's 1850 directory, John Beveridge was at 35 Newgate Street, Newcastle and employed at Plumbers Hall Academy, West walls, Newcastle.
https://specialcollections.le.ac.uk/digital/collection/p16445coll4/id/212133/rec/7
However he is not at 35 Newgate Street in 1851. The reference for this address is

Not having any luck finding John, but a possible sighting of daughter Mary age 18, as a servant in a BELL family in 1851. Head is James Bell, perhaps a relation to her mother Mary Bell?

J Beveridge was at 35 Newgate Street in July 1851, see below.
Is it possible that at the time of the census he was visiting relatives following his wife's death? She died on the 15th March, the census date was 30th March.

It's of no use in your 1851 search, but you might like to know that your man was secretary of the 'Mellona Fair Sex Society' :D

Thank you all for your invaluable help and information. It has been hugely helpful.

Merry Christmas to you too! :D
It's a great pity there is no birth registration for William Shoolbread, it would have given you Mary's maiden name. It might have said Bell, it might not!
You could perhaps treat yourself for Christmas and splurge out £3 for the (instant!) digital image of his death in 1840, age 2. Perhaps just to see whether you can work out why neither the old nor new GRO entries indexed him as Beveridge.

The baptism of William Shoolbread Beveridge on 10th February 1840 at St Andrews Newcastle on Tyne shows the parents as John Beveridge a school master living in Newgate Street Newcastle and his wife Mary.
As suggested JonWarnn I lashed out on a digital copy of the child's death certificate which reads
Date of death 23rd November 1840 Clayton Street
Name William Shoolbread
Sex Male
Age 2 years
Rank or Profession Son of James Shoolbread Iron Founder
Cause of Death Croup
Informant Jas Shoolbread Occupier Clayton Street
How odd!!!

Hi
Gosh, I don't know what to say. Very sorry, of course.
What have I done wrong?
William Shoolbread Beveridge was buried on 19 October, so it can't possibly be the same child (with a bit of parent swapping!)
As you say, it is all a bit odd.
