Title: John (Jack) Downey
Post by: IAFC55 on Monday 02 December 24 20:34 GMT (UK)
Hi

I am trying to help a lady with regards to her Grand Uncle John (Jack) Downey.

The information she has been able to give me is as follows:

Date of Birth:  C1890

Worked as a postal sorter on mail train, also as a clerk in Post Office.

He married Mary Stapleton in last quarter of 1912 Reg District Dublin North.

Address at that time was 69,Blessington Place, Dublin.

He was photographed in a British Army Camp at Hitchin, Hertfordshire, England, in July 1917.

He died sometime between then and 1932 as Mary's death Cert states she was a widow when she died winter if 1932.

Regards

IanC

A possibility in 1911: John Downey aged 25, a sorter in the Post Office, born Galway

Your John's father was Patrick, a farmer, per the marriage record:

1911 Ireland census

house 38 in Avondale Avenue (Arran Quay, Dublin)

Downey   John   25   Male   Boarder   Roman Catholic   Galway Co   Socter in Post Office   Read and write   -   Single

So possibly born c1886 Galway with a father Patrick

Possible 1901 census

Found him
Death notice Irish Independent May 10 1930
Downey (Dublin) John, late of sorting office GPO
Buried Clifden Co.Galway.

An unusual notice, no ‘regretted by’ only what train remains were travelling to Galway on.

This must be his death certificate
