Good Evening everyone,
I was hoping someone would be able to assist me in finding out information on my Great x3 Grandfather William Reid, the information that I have at the moment is the following;
Death Record in 1905 Greenock
Marriage record to Johanna Specht (My Great x3 Grandmother) in 1885 Greenock
Marriage record to previous wife Ellen Allan in 1884 Greenock
On the Marriage record to Ellen, William is listed as a "widower" which would indicate that he was married at least 3 times in his life, and from all the information I have been able to gather, I can see that William was born in Ireland to William Reid and Margaret Cochrane (listed as Margaret Jane Reid/Cochrane on marriage certificate to Ellen) his year of birth varies depending on what document you read, his birth year would be around 1843 on both his marriage certificates, but would be 1848 on his death certificate. my main interest would be to locate the marriage record for his previous marriage before Ellen, and also the possibility of finding out where and when in Ireland he was born.
If anyone has any questions feel free to ask me :)
Kind regards,
Jake

1891 census shows a daughter Lina (17) born in Germany abt 1874. Do we assume this is the child of the first wife?
Lena Reid married James William Roberts in 1897 in Greenock East.
Death for Lena Reid / Lena Roberts (age 89) in Greenock in 1963.
Her marriage certificate should give you the name of her mother (and William’s first wife).

Thank you for the reply Neale, Lina was born to Johanna and her previous husband William Moyer, Lina in Germany, They also had another child (also named William) who was born in the USA. William Moyer passed away which led Johanna and the two kids relocating to the UK, where she then Married William Reid

Do you have William's death certificate? Quite often they list names of former wives.
-
On William's marriage certificate, his father is named as William. What is his father's occupation, and is he still living? Who were the witnesses at the marriage - have you identified them?

Yes, He died March 26th 1905 in Greenock, Wives listed as 1st. Ellen Allan and 2nd Johanna Specht
He married Johanna in 1885 where he is listed as a widower, which would make sense, but he married Ellen Allan the year previous in 1884, where he is also listed as a widower. So I was thinking that maybe he was married previously before Ellen, perhaps in Ireland

Both of Williams' parents were deceased by the time he married Ellen, His father was listed as a Labourer, I have the certificate via Scotland's People for the marriage to Johanna where it looks like the Witness looks to say "A Ross" & "Elizabeth Lyle"
Apologies if I am not too helpful, this is only the second time I have required help finding information such as this out

Not to worry, Jake. I'm just trying to look at all possible avenues, which is why I was asking for more detail. :)

1901 census for Greenock shows a William Reid of Ireland aged 55 sugarhouse labourer living at 22 Sugarhouse Lane Greenock with his wife Johanna of Germany aged 46, and 4 children William 19, James 14, Johanna 10, Francis 9, and 5 lodgers.
"Intimations" shows a William Reid died at 41 Hamilton St Greenock on 26 March 1905 (Greenock Telegraph 27.3.1905)
1911 census shows Johanna widow aged 56 at 21 Nicolson St Greenock with son Francis 19, daughter Johanna 20, and son-in-law John Mitchell 21.

If William was previously married in Ireland it is quite easy to look up on
Irishgenealogy.ie (http://Irishgenealogy.ie)
If you search for marriages between, say 1864 and 1883, you will see that there are over a 100 such marriages. You could go thru them one by one, but even then the information provided by OP will probably lead to multiple candidates.
To really identify if he was married in Ireland requires some better idea of where he was from, and also his religion.

Thank you very much for the help, Where he is from exactly is still unknown to me, but I know for a fact he was Protestant, and I would hazard to say he was an Anglican, as both his marriages that I could find were Church of Scotland.

If I expand the date range to 1862 to 1883 (just to be safe), and use "exact match,"
then I see 127 marriages for a William Reid in Ireland in this period. If OP has the time to go through these one-by-one, then can down-select using father's name - also William - and denomination in which the marriage was performed. The original registrations are available online, for free on the site I already mentioned.
Assuming this throws up several candidates, OP can then look for a death of the wife, in Ireland and/or Scotland, and for any children.

When he married wife #3, William was working as a stoker on a steam ship. So he may have come from a port city in Ireland, like Belfast.

Hi,
Well I learn something everyday, I didn't know about these :)
http://censussearchforms.nationalarchives.ie/search/cs/home.jsp
I wonder if this could be a brother with his mother and father? Transcribed as Margaret COLHRANE but I think it looks like COCHRANE,

Note that Margaret seems to have the nickname Peggy.

From the Valuation Revision Book (1860-1863) it looks like William Reid left Kilmaconnell c1862. He was tenant of a house & small garden rented from Hugh McDonnell.

I think this could be William Reid’s first marriage in 1858 to Margaret Edmiston

Could be William and Margaret in 1871 census https://www.freecen.org.uk/search_records/5b91add9f4040b176c965acf/wm-reid-1871-renfrewshire-greenock-1838-?locale=en
Note a lodger named John Edmonston – could be a brother to Margaret?

Interesting finds, Neale1961. Does look like to be
Robert William and brother John in Scotland, Robert's William's first marriage, etc. Wonder is sister Isabella also went to Scotland (found no death (from 1864 onwards) or marriage for her here in Macosquin area.
Wold be nice if JakeMcGhee would respond.

Good evening everyone,
Apologies for taking so long to get back to you all, I had no idea that you do not get E-Mail notifications about replies unless it was a reply to a message within the topic, so as far as I was aware this topic was dormant.
Thank you so much for taking the time to help me with this side of the family, as it is a section I have struggled to decipher. As far as I can see I have been provided with so much information that I can not wait to look into further!
Kind regards,
Jake

I think you mean William (not Robert). :)
I didn't look for Isabella, but it's possible she went to Scotland too. There seems to have been a strong connection there.

Thanks for noticing the error, Neale.
A large number of people from Aghadowey, and neighbouring Macosquin Parish, went to work in Greenock. I was told by a friend in Greenock that the inhabitants of one street consisted only of families from Aghadowey.

You should get notifications for a topic unless click on the 'unnotify' button. As well, I think you can select where to be notified of the first reply to a topic or all the replies.
It was only when Daisy petal posted the link to the pension application and I saw the townland that I knew to check Macosquin records. Unfortunately, there are gaps in the baptisms in the 1850s. (I did check other local Presbyterian church baptisms in case they went somewhere else but didn't see anything else).
