Title: Missing Licences in Hexham
Post by: andygmandrew on Friday 29 November 24 17:35 GMT (UK)
I am currently transcribing the Hexham marriage registers for FreeReg and have come across a frustrating phenomenon.

In the early 1700s there are many severely ripped pages giving only partial details, however dozens of them have 'married by vertue of a Licence'.

I thought that checking the marriage licences would allow me to fill in the missing details such as the names of the grooms, however none of the names appear in the Durham marriage licences database on Family Search. I also checked the York marriage licence database on FindMyPast but they don't appear there either.

Can anyone suggest where these licences might appear?

LDS have filmed some, but not online

Have you tried the Borthwick institute archives?

I can't see that any are online at the moment.

Since Hexham was a Peculiar of the Diocese of York at that time I should think that any that are in existence are probably held by the Borthwick.

Both York and Durham are online but the licences appear in neither.

It looks as though a block of the Hexham licences from the early 1710s are no longer in the archives.

I see Radcliff that you have found England, Durham Diocese, Calendar of marriage bonds and allegations, 1594-1815. Until now a fairly little known about resource on FamilySearch!

I hadn't realised they were a little known resource, family search catalogue is fabulous I have used it for years as a great free resource, I use freereg as a date finder then use the transcripts, well done to you for transcribing ,you all do a great job

perhaps check and see if these people married in Hexham,

I’ve had a quick look and I don’t believe these marriages took place in Hexham. These are licences issued by the Diocese of Durham where one of the parties happened to live in Hexham (hence the listing in the ‘places’ index). The marriages would have taken place elsewhere, somewhere in the Diocese of Durham.

The Durham bonds 1590-1837 have already been transcribed on Durham Records Online.

At this time Hexham and Hexhamshire were a ‘peculiar’ of the Diocese of York and Licenses to marry there would have been issued by that Diocese or by its representative in Hexham - the situation was complex to say the least! For instance, Peter Burrell, who issued some of the licenses which have been quoted here, was an official of the Diocese of Durham, but he also acted as a representative of the Archbishop of York in Hexham.

What Andy is searching for are the Licences which were issued for marriages which actually took place in Hexham, and these don’t appear to be online.

Still, it's a good resource that Radcliff has brought to general attention. For those looking for Durham licences anyway (if not for marriages in Hexham!)

Hexhamshire

That's a new one on me!

Please don’t think I was decrying it in any way, I was just trying to explain the complexity of the situation as regards Hexham.

I don't, honestly!
You have been very illuminating as always, Jen.
Just wish someone could rustle up an appropriate Thomas Smith & Ann marriage for me circa 1817, maybe not in Hexham though :(

Hexhamshire

That's a new one on me!

I’m getting a bit off topic here. The Archbishop (of York’s) Peculiar of Hexhamshire consisted of the (large) Parish of Hexham with Whitley, Allendale with the Chapelries of West Allen, Allenheads and Ninebanks, and St John Lee with the Chapelries  of Bingfield and St Oswald in Lee.

It remained in the Diocese of York until 1837 when it was integrated into the Diocese of Durham.

It became part of the Diocese of Newcastle when that diocese was created in 1882.

The fact that it has been in three dioceses is the reason that records can be found in different diocesan archives including York and Durham.

Hexhamshire today is more usually called ‘The Shire’ and consists of a thinly populated but beautiful area to the south of Hexham.

Thanks for that Jen.
So I guess it will apply to probate records as well as marriage licences and the like? Good to know.

Yes, I think so.
