Title: More information needed!
Post by: bradwaterss on Tuesday 26 November 24 18:15 GMT (UK)
Hi All,

I have gotten to a standstill whilst researching my family

The man in question is “George Hornby” he married Emily Fremantle or (Freemantle) in 1796 in Southwark

On his marriage record he was a baker

They had 6 children below:
George William 1797
Elizabeth Mary
Thomas William
Emily Ann
Anne Johnston
Samuel Thomas

Emily freemantle re married in 1825 as a widow so he must of passed by then. Other than the information already mentioned I cannot find a birth or death date or any information.

As a Hornby my family have a suspicion they came from French Huguenot or some sort of Ashkenazic Jewish French/german background but cannot be certain.

Any help would be brilliant

Thanks

Hi - Did you discount this burial record at the Gibraltar Row Burial Ground?

There's a George Hornby buried at Rotherhithe in December 1822:

He had a son born in 1797 and in this he died aged 18 so can’t be him unfortunately

In case you missed it, this was a protestant dissenters burial ground and you did say that GH may have been a non-conformist. Unless GH had any children born after 1810, I would suggest this is when he died.

His last child was born 1808 also I cannot find anything on his parents so perhaps that was the generation how emigrated?

Interesting to note that the son Samuel Thomas Hornby was born 9 Nov 1808, but not baptised until 9 Feb 1812. Address - Union Buildings, Shoreditch.
Both parents named on the baptism record, so maybe (not definite) the father was still alive.

Union buildings is same address for baptism of Ann in Jan 1807
Union walk for baptism of Emily in 1804

Before that the family was in Southwark
Thomas 1802 baptism at St Saviour's, Southwark
Elizabeth 1799 baptism at St George the Martyr, Southwark
George William 1797 baptism at St Saviour's, Southwark

Children were NOT baptised at a non-conformist church.

Interesting! I guess we can potentially disprove that 1810 burial then.

If all his children were taken to be baptised he would not of been a non conformist family presumably ?
