Title: Diary summary week ending 1st December 2024
Post by: louisa maud on Monday 25 November 24 12:19 GMT (UK)
Here we go again folks, another  new week and nearer to Christmas.

The weather seems to have calmed down a bit, much milder  and the sun is out
.
My friend was booked on a mini  cruise  from Tilbury, weather wasn't good enough so they stayed in port for 5 days,  I could do that sort of cruising  as I don't like being on an open sea , they will probably get a discount on a future cruise.

Pleased to hear about Viktoria 's little bundle  of joy, I expect she will  see her soon, just a nice time to perk her up after her recent problems.

I hope all who were  feeling poorly last week are feeling  better this week , even though it is winter I am sure if the sun is out we feel much better.

Take care

LM

Thanks Louisa, so tiny .but only four ounces below average 7 pounds.
Got to Bury today on the bus , to theTown  Hall, so The Mayir will attest I am still alive! For my Belgian pension.
%Then a short bus ride to M&S and Superdrug for Atrixo Hand cream ,only £4-69 ,usually £6 ,so I got  four pots.
Hope I get to use  it all up! ;D
I managed it but was whacked when I got  back .
Son having steak tonight ,I will have some bacon opened for a couple of days.

Forgot to mention an odd thing in Church last week.
A few pews in front of me was a strange glow,a dull, silvery light .
I could not really see what it was .
After the service I went to it ,it was a cut out figure of a soldier, top half, with the high  collar of WW1 ,epaulettes too.
Then it dawned ,still there from the Remembrance Service.
Cut from about 1cm thick clear Perspex ,the overhead  lights shone down through them , the cut edges giving a giving a rather eerie outline.
There were several dotted about the church.
I was not scared, who would be by the presence of such a soldier ,!
I went right up to the nearest one and it was very moving ,such a distinctive  outline ,an easily recognisable figure when I realised, but for  a while I did wonder if it was other worldly .

Yes baby Lily is lovely ,her mummy was saying - as she held up the empty feet of the baby grow legs” Lily you are so tiny “.
Her eyes seem dark ,mummy’s are dark brown and Daddy ‘s very blue.
Y
However most babies seem to have very dark blue eyes at first.
Will hear more this evening when my daughter calls as usual every Monday.

Reading a book about the early - well just after WW1 - emigrations to Australia.Hiw ut was not really well organised and although passages were assisted ,the conditions on arrival at the promised “ farms” were hardly tolerable .No farms as such just allotted areas to be worked into farms.
Untouched bushland with no facilities at all.
I know nothing really of these emigrations ,but my paternal great grandmother’s five brothers went in the 1850’s to the gold rush towns of Bathurst and Sofala,N.S.W.
I would like to hear from anyone descended from the 1920’s immigrants.

Well had a rest and must start to prepare tea.
Look after yourselves folks .
Cheerio.
Viktoria.

Another week can’t believe it’ll be 1st Dec… my cousins 86th birthday!

Well what a drive home yesterday from Cirencester … we left at lunchtime as OH was bit concerned about the roads… there was a lot of water flooding across the A40 Cheltenham to Oxford road. Most driving in a sensible fashion but some seemed to think it was like any normal day.
Lots flooding in Northamptonshire, as I’m sure folk have seen on the news.
Our friends were visiting their daughter yesterday and ended up with half their village getting leaves out of the drains as the water was in danger of flooding into their house… fortunately all hands made light work and no flooded house!
Great to have that community spirit.

Your description of ghostly apparitions in church Viktoria sound slightly scary but at least you got to the bottom of it!
Your little Lily sounds delightful.. so tiny… my son only weighed 6lb 14oz, they’re so cuddly when that size. I’m sure you’re looking forward to meeting her soon.

Take care all, have a good week… at least the weather seems more settled and mild.

Caroline

Got my sums wrong didn’t I need to go back to school.
Sixteen ounces one pound ,fourteen pounds one stone !
So baby Lily is six ounces below average .
But still a good weight.

Baked another Christmas cake nursing the oven right through ,two thermometers and a difference between the two so swapped sides and the same problem.
It took ages to stop after I had turned it off .Sooo a  call to D&G tomorrow.
Cake is a much better bake though but I could not get on as it takes four hours to bake at Reg 2 for an hour then reg 1 for three hours more.

Phone call from the Town Gall to tell me my Belgian Pensions form is ready ,signed by The Mayor to say I am still alive and Council Taxall paid up ——-What  Belgium needs that for I do not know !
I must go to,pick it up tomorrow, and get it in the post to arrive before 19/12.
The Christmas post will perhaps cause some delay.

Well folks I have not written one card yet ,must get on with them.
Cheerio ,look after yourselves.
Viktoria.

I have to get a Dutch "Attestatie de Vita" (Certificate of Life) signed off every year.
Luckily, the Dutch accept a signature from a Bank Official :D

And talking of babies weights, my twin daughters were 3lb 8oz and 2lb 14oz!
About 1.588kg and 1.30kg

Typically Dutch, more easy going than Belgians but we liked them very much .

We found it really good that people do tell others off for contravening regulations such as crossing a road when not at a proper crossing point !
Especially if there are children involved ,I did  it once-!Never again !
We were shopping for  children’s’ shoes as in Belgium width fittings were not usual ,as was the case here with good quality shoes. Our boys had like ne,narrow feet.
Holland also had width fittings .
I spotted a shoe shop,in Terneuzen,on the other side of the road,so crossed ———— :-[
Served me right !

Daughter #1 started life with a heart murmur; had an op at 18 months. now, at 46, she has 3 children (including her own twins) and 3 step-children.
10 years as a kitchen manager in a primary school, now in Poundland.

Daughter #2 has never married; works in a big hospital in pharmaceutical stores. Been there for many years.

I also often stop to chat with parents of twins!

Some twins in my mother’s family ,two of my mother’s sisters had twin boys .
The first set very sadly died at 3 months in 1910 from measles- no vaccinations then ,a younger sister had twins in 1940,they grew to adulthood and might still be alive but no contact now, they are in America,
I lost a non identical twin at three months in my last pregnancy but my daughter went to full term.
The first twins were my grandmother’s first child’s twins and the second set
her tenth child’s babies ,she had twelve babies from 1885 to 1910, just about every two years.
I always felt there was someone else like me somewhere ,don’t know why.

Well bed calls and so Goodnight everyone and I hope a good day for you all tomorrow.

Busy day yesterday. Pacemaker fitted, Day Surgery. Mark came down from London Monday evening on the train. Hospital by 7.30am yesterday morning, he drove me in my car as he is named on the Insurance; very convenient at the moment. All done and dusted and discharged by 2pm. All very impressive. !00% marks to all the staff at Bath RUH. Home again by 2.30pm Mark did a big shop at Tesco for me and so I am now settling back to normal life again, bit taking it easy for a few days. He went back to London this morning. I shall miss him but am going to London for Christmas with him.rj

Glad to hear that the procedure went well, rj.  I am waiting for a pacemaker fitting at the moment, but have no idea how long the wait will be.  The consultant said 3 months, but I'm told they say that to everyone!  It's reassuring to hear of successful treatments and good to hear praise for the NHS, too.

Viktoria I had a cousin who came out to Australia in 1921.  They were back in England by 1934.  Don’t think they were into farming though.  He was in the merchant navy after he returned to England, had been in the Royal Navy during WW1.  When he left the merchant navy he had a grocery shop in Sculcoates until his death.

Thanks, the conditions were really bad, very primitive and not at all what was promised ,they were allotted land but had been promised farms, the land had to be cleared by them with no machinery ,no transport only one horse and cart belonging to their go - between with the Government agency.
Just corrugated iron sheets to bend into shanties ,water from a muddy creek
and tinned meat , bags of flour from the nearest store  miles away.
It is a good read written as a novel but informative.
I have never heard of those 1920’s immigrants before ,later ones - late 1940’s yes .

New baby .lots more photographs of her.
Lots with her daddy who tends to nod off!
He is a big lad and the baby looks so tiny.

Glad you got your pacemaker Jeff and that you soon will Gillig, I cannot have one  >:(
Well son off to head office tomorrow so a chance to do
some real cleaning   uninterrupted ,he will be a few days ,might divert to go across country to see baby .
Well a last kitchen tidy for the night .
Look after yourselves folks .
Night night.

Bought some books of stamps today, must make a start on the Christmas cards .
I keep a record of those I have sent and who sends to me ,if two years have gone and no return cards ,unless there are special circumstances I take them off the list .
It is a real fag.

Got a letter today, ,a copy of what has been sent to The Heart Failure Clinic from the  Consultant  Ophthalmologist at Rochdale Eye Clinic who has now prescribed drops for Glaucoma  that do not affect the heart ,Yippee! ( he did not prescribe the ones that do)
All organised for a regular repeat prescription.at the Health Centre.
That is good news.

Grandson phoned today to see if all was O.K with the transfer to Utilities Warehouse, for Gas and Electricity .
Grand daughter in law is an agent for them .
I was with EDF, no problems but not the least expensive.
Martin Lewis said they were very good.

Well December tomorrow, I have made a start on the big Christmas clean, all windows done and glass cabinets etc.

Well tummy reminds me to eat ,so Cheerio, best wishes to those with worries and oroblems.I hope you all feel better very soon.

Viktoria, you are an absolute whirlwind , you cram so much in to a day.

Today was our church bazaar, I had my usual £1 stall , split adults and children,  I buy things throughout the year so that   " a gift each time " is worth the pound it costs, getting very difficult now as not so many bargains  about, I did manage to get quite a few elves  reduced from  £4.99 to £1, had 1 small child who had 2 children's  tickets, she won 2 elves and was thrilled to bits she had "twins" she is 4 years old, I commented to one mother about her child's manners, so many of us probably comment about bad manners but I felt this mum deserved some praise, all in all hard work, last night and most of  today, we managed a whopping £950, was our second d highest amount, makes it worthwhile, was a hard day but enjoyable.

Now for a good night's sleep if possible.

Enjoy your day tomorrow

Bought some stamps last week - but realise not enough. Realise need another 20 cards, too, when this morning I sat down to update my card list. Oh dear.
Difficult week car & weather wise - snow, ice etc last weekend took me hours and hours to get my old car driveable, then as OH feeling very seedy, I had to venture through ice and slush and worse, with people zooming through floodwater as well - I drive an old Landrover, but go sensibly and slowly in such conditions - to do a needed supermarket shop. OH's much newer, younger Japanese 4WD car wouldn't start at all a few days later when we tried - blessings on AA Homestart. It's much younger battery was a Dodo, new one fitted by AA man.
So a lovely start to the week.
Radstockjeff, I've had my pacemaker for nearly a year now, I realise. The whole business took only a few hours, I was able to watch it as the surgeon did it, via a screen, and after a check up a few weeks later I was able to drive again. So far all seems well. Be glad, as I am, that some clever people invent these things. Wish someone could sort my printer so it would scan, again - iy no longer wants to! Drat.

Ty, technology  is very frustrating  frequently,

Busy weekend for me, church bazaar yesterday  after setting it all up on Friday,  fortunately was a dry day yesterday otherwise we might not have got so many people in, was also  the Christmas tree festival,  today family service 2 hours later than usual and I was on refreshments also the Christmas  tree festival again today,  sponsored by various clubs, there is a winner, I voted for the local fire station  because as I went into Church yesterday it was the first to  catch my eye but the knit and natter one  was fantastic,  it is surprising what Christmas dinner items can be knitted and to decorate a tree, all very impressive

Then sadly when I returned home I heard my cousin has died today, 92, a very good age but the last year she has suffered, had several falls  and spent time in hospital, was adamant she was not going into a home, could had afforded the best 5 star home but no, she wouldn't give in, she went down fighting as they say.

Very cold today although no frost this morning.

Take care everyone, enjoy the rest of your day

Yes a good age ,but quality of life is important too isn’t it.
You are a very busy person too L.M.and many others in R,C, too.
I now can’t do so much and I loved doing the Church bazaars etc ,really social  occasions.

Son back today, but later as in the office this morning, so it will be evening
before he gets back.

I kept getting warnings that RootsChat was not a safe site ,impersonating RC,
Oooer!

A dull very wet day , washing on maidens inside .
Am knitting a baby blanket ,pink and white wool in moss stitch. Did one fir grandchildren in pale turquoise and white ,no wrong stitches , this one is full of errors but it is me ,how I am now with all the 30+ years that have passed since the first one.So far down I can’t bear to unravel such a lot of work -100 stitches!
It will still keep Lily warm .

Cooked a small pork joint yesterday so just vegetables today
Had to buy a bag of Bramleys instead of  just one for the mincemeat , so will make and freeze the rest so apple sauce done for Christmas .Not much else to do is there!

What about Greg Wallace——— I bet he shopped at Harrod’s!!!
What a crass remark about his victims!

Well must get on ——- after another cuppa.
Cheerio folks Viktoria.

Christmas shopping in our nearest big town/small city this morning.  We have a good bus service with a friendly driver - everyone knows his name.  Unfortunately the last bus returning to our village leaves at 13.50, so it's been a bit of a rush this morning.  Exeter was very busy even on a Monday, so I guess everybody had the same idea as I did.  I bought lots of stocking fillers for my grandchildren  and found 3 sweaters for myself, one rather fancy one for a Christmas party on Saturday night and 2 nice ones for everyday.  Lucky me!  I was supposed to be buying something from my son and something else from my husband, so that's plenty of stuff crossed off the list.  My husband has already got his from me. It's a winter coat and he's already wearing it! I'll have to find a little something to wrap up for him.
My daughter always selects and buys stuff for her family, so we just pay for it and feel pleased that they receive something they wanted.  Then we wrap it up and present it.  It's a good system and means that they are not disappointed.

We are gearing up for a village Christmas concert and the choir has some interesting songs/carols to sing.  We shall also be walking round the village singing carols outside the houses and collecting for Save the Children.  I've had my Christmas haircut (another tick), but the cake is waiting to be iced and I have yet to make the mince pies.  The pudding has been quietly maturing away for some time now.  Decorations up this weekend, I think.  My husband will have to go up into the loft to find them.  I do love Christmas and the family get-together, though the other part of my family is at the other end of the country.

That is a good system ,might adopt it.

Hope those in The Isle of Man are O.K , on the news just now that fierce winds and  so damage expected.
Let’s hope things are alright.

It is dark already, has rained all day .
Just waiting for son to return ,no use cooking but all is ready to do so, he usually isn’t hungry after a long drive ,always likes an omelet ,so the cooked meal can wait for tomorrow.

Well,hope all are O.K
Cheerio, Viktoria.

I am confused!
The weather forecast on internet (BBC.co.uk/weather) says light winds tonight (3mph to 9mph) and tomorrow (3mph to 15mph) but strong winds Wednesday evening (42mph to 48mph).
We get this a lot since Meteo Group took over the forecasts!

Manx Radio says:
Tonight: Light to moderate northerly winds and temperatures falling to 0°C in places
Tomorrow: The light and variable wind will settle to the southwest and freshen in the afternoon

AAAaaaaarrrgh!!!
This has been a week for disasters!
Now trying in vain to thread up an overlocker correctly - started trying last afternoon, gave up in frustration. Tried online videos - absolutely no help, fingers of demonstrator always seemed to be in the way!
-Oh, and still can't persuade my printer to scan images and let me store them for further use in "scans" folder.

Am i sure that technology is progress? Please pass me a sheet of parchment, a  goose-quill pen, and some oak gall ink.

Oh T.Y.——— I really feel the same ,no on many ways things are not progressing ,to put stuff on files when I could go to “ackshull “physical folders  and find exactly what I want and put them back in the cupboard.
I can have as many files out as I need ,without any problems.
No one else has access to them - only the company-/ organisation I am dealing with.
Wind the clock back please !

I have a sore foot! My trusty shopping trolley, lives in the vestibule all folded down.To keepit in place without falling over I use an antique very heavy iron door stop .in the shape of a dog ,well the dog fell over onto my foot - OUCH !
Now it feels as if I am walking on something sharp!Perhaps one of the tiny foot bones has cracked .
I will wait and see, it will get worse or better.

A bright sunny cold day so washing on the line.
Have polished up two proper paraffin lamps, really old ones like we had in the deep countryside of Shropshire until electricity arrived in the 1950’s
A lovely copper kettle and some huge oriental brass trays which hung in our Victorian house.
They would be ridiculous here .
So Charity shop or our local theatre for props.
Well.low battery so must close.
Look after yourselves folks.
Cheerio. Viktoria.

I am guilty of joining the last week’s Diary, got the Bramleys  at least a week ago, more probably.
 :-[
Well a more  Christmas cards to write this evening !
So many but I keep a list from year to year ,if no return of cards for two years they are off my list unless there are extenuating circumstances.
Postage is ridiculous now.

More photos of baby Lily,I can see a likeness to her Daddy ,he seems to nurse her a lot and so many photographs of them together.

Well after a sunny day, with washing out but not fully dry so on the clothes maiden now.

Yes, although the day was bright and and sunny  when I brought the washing in from the line it was still very damp, too damp to iron.

Another charity coffee morning today. We have them at least twice a month in the village, one for the local hospice, one for various local institutions - the crumbling scout hut, for example.

Another elderly friend was whisked off to A&E with heart problems yesterday. It's that time of the year, I'm afraid.  I dread getting Christmas cards with bad news.

It's that time of year, I'm  afraid.

Been quite a reasonable day here.

Heating engineer  was supposed to return, no he did not, annoying to say  the least.

Had a get together with my husband's siblings at local restaurant,  9 of us  I was surprised how well they all looked, only seem to see them once a year now, we are 15 mins away from home, others were spread about up to 2 hours away.

I am hoping to get to Convent  Garden tomorrow for my friends unchristmas present, we don't buy each other but we do something different we can both enjoy, got to find out the best way to get there from Tower Hill, bus or train, want nice dry weather.

I  have only received 1 card so far  from Hong Kong , spoil sports didn't use proper stamps, just a printed post office one.

Enjoy your tomorrow
