Title: MARGAET DAVIDSON GILLESPIE - BORN 1893
Post by: Leith Lass on Sunday 24 November 24 17:01 GMT (UK)
Hi another question on the Gillespie side.
Margaret Davidson Gillespie was born in May 1893 and registered address is 78 Leith Walk. Sadly her mother Margaret died in 1894. She had a brother William Henry born 1890. In the 1891 and 1901 census her brother is shown as living with his Grandmother Christina but there is no trace of Margaret from birth onwards. I think the Davidson could be the father's surname. Strange I cant find anything at all on her. She just vanished. Any clues ???

She was only aged 18.  I don't think anyone could have got her age that wrong.

Interesting - no. I didn't think to look elsewhere as I had only just started on this branch of a tree for a friend and was so focussed on finding her in the early Leith censuses i.e. 1901 and 1911. It is strange.  However, Neil says that the age is wrong so it couldn't be her.  Thank you both. Much appreciated

Clutching at straws here.

Is there any possibility she only survived for a few minutes after her birth & the death wasn't registered?  I know in England there is still a requirement to register both the birth & death in those circumstances.

Did you download the 1893 birth cert?   If not - just wondered if there may be anything on it apart from the obvious birth details

Also in Scotland, so that straw won't float, I'm afraid.

Just in case you have not seen this. I had a look at the Paternity Index on Scottish Indexes to see if there was an entry which might relate to Margaret Davidson Gillespie. I could not see one but there  may be an entry which relates to her brother.

Pursuer Margaret Gillespie 52, Jane Street, Leith
Defender William Brunton, Skinner,  1, Anderson Place, Bonnington Road, Leith
Child born 1890 Year 1891 Court Edinburgh

( I note that the Gillespie family are living at 52 Jane Street in the 1891 census).

Hi yes I was aware of the paternity as her brother was also illegitimate.

I dont think Margaret died shortly after birth because in later years on William's service records she is listed as a next of kin i.e. Margaret [sister] and also a Mrs Gillespie [Grandmother]

For info.

1891c William age 26, leather dresser is living with his parents and siblings
address  1, Anderson Street, St Cuthbert, Edinburgh, South Leith, Midlothian, Scotland

1901c William is married living 3, Ferrier Street, Edinburgh, Leith, South Leith they have 5 children, first child born 1893

Is it possible that baby Margaret was informally adopted and is on the census with a different name?

What year was his service record and does it give an address for Margaret?

It’s strange that she’s not listed with her grandmother Christina on the 1901 census, could she be with another family member in 1901 ?

Hi Ladyhawk
The service record was for 1912 and Margaret [sister] and Mrs Gillespie [Grandmother] were listed at 78 Leith Walk.
You would have thought something would have come up for Margaret in the 1911 census

Did he re enlist? I can see a service record for William with an attestation date of 25 Sept 1907  joining the Royal Scots. His place of birth has been incorrectly transcribed as Leigh, Midlothian. The record I am looking at has him discharged as medically unfit for further service in July 1911. ( Fold 3 seems to have a record showing that he had previously attested with the Royal Scots militia but I am unable to view the original).
