I think it is a mix of electoral rolls and census. Sorry I wasn't clear about this and where they were.
I need to find his father John who died in 13 November 1884 Otautau, Otago. and his mother, Elizabeth Beck (Gillespie) died 7 June 1897 Wairio, Five Forks, Otago. This would be for 1881 for both of them.
I think there should be something 1898 for the son John - see below.
Census / Electoral Rolls
Year name occupation residence electorate qualification property qualification
1881 John Beck Farmer Wairio Wallace Freehold section 169, deferred payment, Wairio
1893 John Beck Farmer Wairio Wallace Freehold section 169, deferred payment, Wairio
1898
1902, 1903, 1908, John & Agnes are at Gummies Bush. Farmer, section 169, Wairio
1911 John Beck, groom, Agnes Beck, married, Elizabeth Beck spinster, 45 Earn Street, Invercargill, (no house there now).
many thanks for your help.

Hi Bronwen,
Sadly, New Zealand Government does not release genealogical information from censuses. Instead genealogists have to use other resources such as street and phone directories, electoral rolls, juror lists, property owner lists, school records, local history groups, etc.
There were some early and frequently one-off informal censuses that can be accessed, although these may not provide much information for genealogical research.
For further information see:

Many thanks to both of you. I get very confused by I also have some information from the electoral Rolls, But I think you only got to vote if you owned land at that time. I better investigate when they started and stopped.
Very best wishes

Hi Bronwen,
I don't know how much information you have on John Beck [died 1884] but his obituary gives some detail about his background:

reference to Five Forks [North] Otago seems a long way from Riverton Southland. Is this a mistake or a clue for a different avenue for searching?

I picked that up somewhere and hadn't checked it. However I have just had a quick look on the
On the NZ Topo Maps there are five places in Southland with Five as the starting name
Five Fingers Peninsula, Southland
Five Fingers Point, Southland
Five Rivers, Southland
Five Rivers, Southland
Five Roads, Southland
So quite likely I have it wrong. I would need to connect one of the above with Wairio.
Many thanks
