Hello,
I have found a very strange entry in the 1939 England on Wales census.
Buckinghamshire, Newport Pagnell.
I am tracing my family and I have looked up a person called Gwendoline Finch but there’s a line through the entry and the name Mary G Chick and lots of other words I can’t read.
Can anyone decipher this for me?

These registers were used for various official purposes for many years after 1939.
Gwendoline Finch has been scored out in green and the name changed to Mary G. Chick. Mary G. Finch married Leslie W. Chick in 1950, so this has been updated to her married name. One of the annotations was added in September 1951 and another in March 1960. Presumably, at the time of the 1939 register she was called by her middle name.

The 1939 National Register (n.b. Not a census!) was updated by the NHS after the war, until the 1990s.
Changes of name were recorded - and that probably happened in your case.
