Today, I found the death record of Sarah Johnston who died Mar 27, 1890 in Wroxeter Township, Huron Co.,Ontario. She was age 63, wife of William Johnston, hotel keeper. I am looking for the maiden name of Sarah who was born 1827-1832 depending on which record you are looking at.
William died June 1, 1903 in Wroxeter. I think they probably married 1851-1861, probably in Ontario although both born Ireland. I found them in 1861, married, in Howick Township, Although William was a farmer in 1861.

In 1871, they are still in Howick but William is now a tavern keeper. https://www.rootschat.com/links/01the/
In 1881, they are in Wroxeter. Sarah dies 1890 of uterine cancer.
William’s death is on findagrave although they have his age at death as 31 instead of 81. Sarah is not on findagrave although I was told by the administrator of Howick Township they are buried together.
Thanks for any help.

Would there be an obituary for William Johnston who died June 1, 1903 in Wroxeter Township, Huron Co., Ontario?
-
Hi,
From the Wroxeter Star newspaper, 4 June 1903, page 1, second column towards the bottom.
"One of the old residents Wm. Johnston, age 81..born Fermanagh, Ireland...came to Canada
50 years ago settled first on a farm, then ran a hotel.....he had no near relatives...."

Nothing for Sarah, newspaper coverage was spotty in that area in 1890.

I am so delighted to see your reply, dbree. I was able to follow the link and find the obituary. However, it is impossible to read, all blurry. I think it may contain other important clues about William. Does it mention his wife’s name?
One important clue was that he had no near relatives. There is an online tree which names 6-8 siblings although I wasn’t believing it for a minute.
Is there any other way to access this obituary so that I may read it?
Thank you so very much

I finally found William on the 1901 census, using the name Esty in Wroxeter Village (Asa and Gertrude). My problem was that I was putting William's birth as 1822 (as per 1871 and 1881 census) but the 1901 census says he was born Aug 22, 1831 and emigrated 1856. Narrows down the marriage timeframe since he was married before the 1861 census to Sarah.
