Title: 1665 burial - English and Latin
Post by: mijath on Friday 08 November 24 12:06 GMT (UK)
Hi, the fourth entry down on the attached image - 'Mary the good old wife of Richard Styringe a shepherd'

Can anyone help interpret the two lines beneath this. I think I know what English says, I'm wondering what it means and if the Latin below is related.

Many thanks

PS - a poignant name for the illegitimate child in the first entry...

The English second line says:

...after a storme from xtmas till then was buryed...

I would say that the weather was stormy from late December to March the 15th.

The next line begins:

si sol splendescat = if the sun begins to shine

The full line can be found on the internet if you search for "si sol splendescat"

ADDED:

The Latin refers  to the  feast of Candlemas (2 February),  aka the day sometimes called Groundhog Day.
