Title: Buchanan family help
Post by: fletch001 on Sunday 03 November 24 09:38 GMT (UK)
Good morning All,
Hope someone will be able to help with a few of my Buchanan missing data. There are a few but i will start one at a time, many thanks for any help you may be able to give, or point me in the right direction.

Firstly, I have Sarah Buchanan supposedly born 1758 in Appin and Lismore, Argyll but was baptised 13 March 1768 Lismore, Argyll, mother and father was Anne Buchanan and Hugh Buchanan.

I cannot find any evidence that Sarah was born in 1758 and secondly she married Duncan Kennedy around 1780 but cannot find any marriage documentation.

That is the first part of my quest so hopefully someone may be able to help, thank you all for all your time in this matter
Regards
Mike

Where have you got the info that Sarah was “supposedly” born 1758 & that she married Duncan Kennedy?

When & where did they have children?

Hi All,
Trish & Col,
You have the correct Sarah Buchanan, unfortunately I had some information from other FT's stating her birth was 1758, that is most likely incorrect.
I have Jean Kennedy and Ann Kennedy as Duncan & Sarah's children.
The main problem is that I cannot find a marriage for Duncan & Sarah. Once this is solved, I can move on to the next problem.
Many thanks
Mike

Records on SP, if they did marry there.

Lismore
Births 1758-1819, marriages 1777-1801, no deaths

Asppin
Births 1751 – 1819, marriages 1767-1819, no deaths

Then Lismore & Asppin births 1819-1854, marriages 1821-1854, no deaths

Statutory Registration from 1855

Hi Colin,
That is the big problem, i have tried Ancestry, SP, FindMyPast and FS with no luck, they have some of their childrens births but not the marriage of Duncan & Sarah. Not a clue if they were married at all or documents may be lost?
Regards
Mike

All,
Next problem is Sarah Buchanans father, Hugh Buchanan, he has a possible DoB of around 1736 from other FT's, but the only Hugh Buchanan I have was baptised Feb 1771 to John Buchanan and Mary McPhale.
Does not look right to me when Sarah's baptism is correct at 1768.
Any help greatly appriciated
Mike

You will only find the original records on Scotland's People.

Mike,

Hi, I think you need to be more flexible in your spelling.

Try H*gh Bu*n on SP, many to choose from.

Hugh most likely been born before 1737 but if that was in Appin or Lismore no records and no record elsewhere in the County. There are a few outwith Argyll but quite distant.

Colin
PS: I have been using wildcards.

Probably the record, if it ever existed, has not survived.

See https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=714261.0

If you think you know which parish they were married in, you could take a look at the Kirk Session records of that parish on Scotland's People.

Forfarian,
I have read your article regarding SP and other sites and totally agree. However, a bit expensive and the different spelling of names does not help.

I have used up a lot of credits to find out it is the wrong person due to different spelling of names etc. But i keep on trying although some documents may not have survived and your FT ends there.

Regards
Mike

Forfarian,

It's a lot cheaper than the corresponding services in England/Wales, Australia, New Zealand etc. And there are great swathes of the world where there aren't even indexes. Let alone free-to-use ones.

And you can search with wildcards - for example b*c*n*n should pick up all variants of Buchanan. You can't do this on all of the corresponding web sites, so you have to search every conceivable variant of a surname. And in some commercial sites it can be difficult to narrow down the search to what you actually want.

If it's not on Scotland's People it's unlikely to be on any other site, because (as far as Scotland in concerned) almost all of what is on the commercial sites is indexes or transcriptions of originals that are on Scotland's People, so any record that has not survived to be made available on SP is not going to be available on any of the commercial web sites either.

forfarian,
Looks like some have not survived. Been trying different wildcards all morning on SP and still no further forwards. I try to narrow it down but the site goes blank, no further information.

However, the persons/couples children show up and confirms the parents which i am looking for. Not giving up just yet, i will keep trying.
