Title: Help finding Rees's
Post by: pedroparker on Monday 21 October 24 21:05 BST (UK)
Hi,

I'm having a lot of difficulty tying down and locating some of my Rees family from Llansamlet Swansea.

John Rees b.1837 Llansamlet (married 7/11/1857 llansamlet) to Margaret Sims b.1839 llansamlet - d.1884/5

They had I believe 8 children. All bp in Cwm Salem chapel llansamlet.

I believe John Rees remarried in Bridgend in 1886 to a Mary Ann Williams b. 1858 Ynysmeudwy and had 4 more children from this 2nd marriage. Possibly more.

1st marriage children:

* Margaret b.1859
* William b.1862
* David b.1864
* Gwenny b. 1866
* Hopkin b. 1870 D. 1936 M. 1895 Swansea to Mary Jones
* Elizabeth b. 1872 d.1947 M. 1902 Swansea to John Abraham Thomas
* John b. 1873
* Catherine b.1876

2nd marriage children:

* Mary b. 1896
* David Charles b. 1892
* Samuel b. 1893
* Elvira b. 1899

Apart from Hopkin b. 1870 and Elizabeth b. 1872 I've not managed to locate the others to marriages or past the 1881 census etc.

Any help or information would be great if possible. If anyone could shed any light on these other children then that would be brill

Kind regards and many thanks in advance for any kind researching and help..

Have you confirmed Margaret's death?  www.freebmd.org.uk

Have you checked the children's births on GRO online to determine the mothers maiden name?

https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/Login.asp

When was the second marriage?  He was b 1837 & she was b 1858.  He would be 57 when child was b 1892

Hi CaroleW,

Thanks for your help.

I do have a death certificate with a family member for her but have both 1884 and 1885 in my tree notes, but is definitely one of these years.

I haven't sent for any birth certificates as of yet but will if don't have any luck before hand.

The second marriage we believe was in 1886 in Bridgend. We have a Photo with/from David Charles with family believing he lived in Pontycymmer.

Hope this is of some help?

1911 census with the children from the marriage, but the father is Thomas and over 10 years younger than John.
Thomas 62 b. Pentrechwyth

Thanks Osprey.

That does look like the same children which is confusing and Pentrechwyth we still have family and know well. I need to get to the bottom of this as we know they are family but bits are not quite adding up.
May be possible that he was John Thomas Rees and falsified his age for work or for there not to be such a gap with wife? A shift from spelterman to coal miner wouldn't be unheard of for the area.  ::)

I'm open to any evidence or theory to possibly unlock this side to the family. :)

Thanks again Osprey.

Mansel Road is a 2 minute walk from Pentrechwyth, and I've got the deceased death range of father to work from <marriage 1924.

Am still drawing blanks on this after trying to connect and sleuthing.

Am focusing efforts on trying to find the 1st marriage children's marriages to see if any of them have father deceased at that date. Maybe this will rule John/Thomas Rees being the same man or not. If the later, it's then working out how both sets of children are my relatives as we have photos of both and know they are from my Gu's (grans) side of the family. ::)

Thanks Osprey,

Am going to go over it again. There is a possibility of a mix up but am not sure.
Margaret Sims had a sister Ann Sims who married a Thomas Rees b.1849 as you said on 1881 living next door. But as far as I'm aware they only had 4 children;
John b.1872
Hopkin b.1873
Elizabeth b.1876
Thomas Edward b.1880

Happy to be proven wrong to get to the truth though. There are too many Rees  :)

That's great, thanks Osprey.

I think I'm having a moment of Rees brain fog with too many Rees in my head. That does sound more plausible and correct with the dates and maiden names etc. thank you.
I can work and see bit more clearly now... and sleep better tonight.  :)
Thomas's 1st marriage 4 children I have information on but John and Margaret's I'm finding difficult to tie down.
