Hi,
There is a book on the 1st floor reading room of Wellington National Library called `The Hills of Herbert`. It is a family history of the Hill family in New Zealand. There is a chapter titled Robert William Hill. Robert married Ellen O`Shea and it is details about Ellen I am interested in. I have a DNA connection to one of her ancestors and I think Ellen may be the sister of my great grandmother. However, I need some details to verify that, such as date of birth, place of birth and parental names if possible. A telephone photo of any relevant pages would be hugely appreciated.

Have you asked your library if they can get it on Interloan?
I see it is held in some other libraries.
(Assuming you are in NZ of course)

Hi,
I am in Germany

Hi,
I am in Germany
Ah well. It was a good idea.
For others who might be able to help..it is also in the Hamilton public Library, and several of the university libraries.

Hi Tablecloth, and welcome :)
I can have a look for this book for you.
This topic was posted in New Zealand Resources & Offers. I'll move it to the main New Zealand Board so I don't forget to action it.

For your information, the above gives details of data collected at a death registration. Of course this is only as accurate as the knowledge of the person providing the information.
If applying for such a document, the cheaper option is a printout. It may contain more information than a certificate and can be emailed to you.

Thank you ! All of that is very helpful. That gives me the name of the father and an approximate year of birth. I also see a lot of useful data is collected at death, which is also very helpful. Thank you again.

Hello again,
Do you know if Ellen nee O'Shea had a sister, Bridget? The above appears to be the two girls on their way to Canterbury, New Zealand in 1874.

Hi,
I am not sure the dates work for that, if she was born in 1859. I applied for the death details and unfortunately there are no parental details and the place of birth is simply county Kerry, however it does state she had been in New Zealand for 55 years. In which case there is an entry for an Ellen Shea on an 1877 sailing that just about works.
I am pinning my hopes on the `Hills of Herbert´
-
Of course you are correct about those dates. Another senior moment.... ::)

Hi Tablecloth,
Just to provide a timeframe for my next visit to National Library, it will be next week.

Hi, a quick update. I wasn`t sure what was happening so I contacted one of the universities directly in New Zealand and they have kindly scanned and emailed the relevant pages of `The Hills of Herbert `to me.
-
Understood, thank you.

Hi tablecloth,
Interested to know if the scanned pages contain the information you have been seeking?

Seems I was a bit optimistic in what I might find. All it says about Ellen is “ In 1879 Robert married Ellen …… “
-
Is anyone aware of whether immigrants coming to New Zealand formally registered anywhere when arriving in 1877 ? I am trying to think off where a record of Ellen´s birthplace and mother´s name might be.
-
One of my great-grandmothers emigrated to New Zealand from Ireland around 1861. After marrying in this country, she had nine children. I obtained a birth printout for each child and it wasn't until the last birth that "Old Palace Green" (sic) Limerick, was recorded at registration as to where the mother was born. The rest just showed Ireland. So maybe you could choose that route and be lucky? It would still leave the parents' names to be found but it's a start.

Hi Tablecloth,
To answer your question, no, people just got off the ship and got on with settling in.
But if she was from Ireland then she might appear in local Roman Catholic church records.

...and also investigate the records of County Kerry.
