Title: Camberwell OLD Cemetery Map
Post by: Lensmeister on Saturday 19 October 24 11:25 BST (UK)
Morning all,

I hope someone can assist.

I am looking for a map of the plots/grave locations within the cemetery itself.

My wife Great Grandmother is buried there at Square 79, Grave 19521 (according to Find a grave website - https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/218306975/susannah-hill?_gl=1 Hope the link works ).

Not sure if her husband and children are also buried there.

Hi. According to Ancestry, over 400 people with the surname 'Hill' have been buried in that cemetery over the years. Who in particular are you looking for? (Names and dates?)

Sorry, just realised your link takes you to Susannah's record on FindAGrave. But it includes confirmation that her husband and two children are buried there too. Not sure what you are asking?

Hi again. If you follow your link and click on 'Camberwell Old Cemetery' it will take you to the page for that cemetery. If you then click on the photo you can scroll through a number of images. A few of them include maps.

Bad news, I'm afraid. Square 79 is in the the heavily overgrown part of the cemetery in and around the figure-of-8 paths on the right on the map you've been directed to on Find a Grave. It's in the lower right corner of that area, well off the nearest path and unlikely to be possible to get to the grave safely, if at all. I have seen detailed grave-by-grave maps for some squares, presumably supplied by the office (at Camberwell New Cemetery) but I doubt that they'd be of any use in this instance.

For anyone else coming across this thread, I'll mention that the aforementioned map is out of date as there has been relandscaping and re-use of squares 1, 6 & 7 and thereabouts around the side gate on Wood Vale and 21 & 100-104 off Underhill Road. It's unlikely that any old gravestones in these areas can be found, and many elsewhere throughout the cemetery have also been removed.

The above situation is why there are well over 2000 photo requests on Find a Grave, most unlikely to ever be fulfilled.

Having given all those gloomy tidings, there is now a cemetery friends' organisation which may be better placed to help and advise than me, though do feel free to ask, especially before travelling any distance.

Yes, there's an ongoing battle everywhere between people who want cemeteries, or at least parts of them, to be one or more, but incompatibly all, of:-

a) left overgrown as wildlife sancturies
b) cleared at least to the extent that they can find their ancestors' graves
c) cleared for for new burials
d) cleared because of (perceived) danger from rickety monuments
e) cleared for housing/offices/supermarkets etc.

Attached is a map of the end of interest. It isn't as pretty as the one on Find A Grave, but has clearer numbering.

If relying on a satnav, make sure it takes you to the junction of Forest Hill Road and Wood Vale. There's a tendency to use the postal address on the Council website, which is the office at Camberwell New and where the TfL website sends everyone who looks up which bus to take.

A little more info. Using the Plot Number search on Find A Grave reveals that Susannah and Alexander Francis Hill are each buried with 6 other unrelated people who died around the same time. These are therefore most likely common graves and unmarked or had miniature headstones now lost in the undergrowth.

Alexander William Hill in Square 93 at Camberwell New is similarly with 4 unrelated others. This is another common grave area with few marked graves and mainly bare grass (at least it's not dense trees!). I think all have been photographed by me and others with no Hills found, nor any of the other people who share his grave. (If you're lucky in such cases, at least one person has a gravestone and that locates them all.)

Sorry for the glum tidings again.

Thanks Chris

I'll drop the cemetery a line see if it is possible but sounds like it is a bit of a bust.

I wanted to be able to take my wife over there as Susannah had a bad time in her later years.

Thanks again
