Title: James Dundas Janet Clarke
Post by: RICHIE on Monday 14 October 24 21:34 BST (UK)
After a search on Scotlands people I have found the marriage banns for the marriage of James Dundas and Janet Clarke who were married in Bathgate Nov 13 1675. I was hoping to possibly find James Dundas's father but unfortunately I'm finding it hard to read the writing. I can make out the name John Dundas but I'm unsure if this is the father of James . Can anyone possibly help with reading the attached copy of the Banns . Thank you.

Novr ye 13 1675 James Dundas in yis paroch and Jannet Clerk in Livingstone paorch booked yr names in order to mariage John Burges ?drys[alt]er? In Bathgate cau[tione]r for both ye parties ?given? to ye poor 2-10-0.

I'm not 100% sure that it's Burges but I am 100% sure that the first letter is not a D. Compare it with the B of Bathgate in the next line and with the D of James' surname.

A cautioner was someone, usually a friend of the person(s) involved, who stood surety that the wedding would actually go ahead. AIUI the couple usually 'consigned pledges' which meant they paid a sum of money, and if they didn't subsequently go through with the wedding the pledges were forfeited.
