Hello fellow Family Researchers
My maternal G G Grandparents were Jonathan Laurie and Eliza Carrick (1860-1919). They had at least one child, my GG Mother, Annie (1872- 1923), born in Streatham, Victoria. The documents I have been able to research have the family name listed variously as Laurie, Lowrie and Lourie. I suspect the origin may be Irish, but eqully could be Scottish. Sometimes the written transcripts are hard to distinguish the actual letters, and I suspect the spelling was due to the actual government official taking the notation, no doubt a familiar story! I do remember my late mother referring to her Grandmother as "Annie Laurie just like the song", so have always stuck (rightly or not) with that spelling.
Can anyone assist with: The origin of the name and therefore the "correct" spelling and any information about Jonathan and his origins. I have a separate thread request for info about Eliza Carrick and her family, but all help, no matter how small, would be greatly appreciated.

I believe the name to be Scottish in origin.
There are numerous variations of the spelling - Lawrie, Lowrie, Lawry, Laurie, Lorrie, Laury, Lowery, Lawry.
There is no such thing as a "correct" spelling. Standardised spelling is a modern notion.

Do you have any certificates?
Could you check your information as you have Eliza CARRICK born 1860 and a child born 1872.

You need to look at marriage records, immigration records, birth certificates of children to obtain as much information about Jonathan, his father's name, his birth place, etc, as possible.
If you already have this information, then you would have to be willing to post it here, so others may be able to help.

If Eliza was born in 1860, did she really have a child in 1872 at the age of 12?

Obits do not tie in either?

Eliza obviously had numerous children. What information do their various birth certificates give about parents age, birth place, occupation, etc.

Thank you for responding. Yes, I was aware of some of the different spelling, which makes verifying information that much more difficult. I agree that standardisation has come about with a general increase in overall literacy.
I do appreciate your guidance that the name is most likely of Scottish origin.

The first child born in 1870 by a mother who was 10 years old ???
It would seem that birth certificates have not been viewed. Victorian certificates contain a wealth of information.
I would agree, you need to revisit your research.

Thank you so much Cando
I do have some of this, but not all. This gives me leads to follow up and verify at my end. :)
Interesting that Eliza is listed as Carrigg (the Irish spelling) not Carrick as my documentation lists for Annie.
With much gratitude

I should have added that I have accessed BDM (multiple states where available) and retreived as much information as I can without downloading every certificate. I do where I can but the cost ultimately would be prohibitive for me to do this widely. Similarly, most of time is spent after hours, so I do rely on online information more than physically going to the geneology sections of libraries.
I do take your point about the need to revise some of my information. Many dates are abt so opens up +/- a year or two. Still, all your points are valid, and as a relative novice, I am extremely grateful for your assistance.

The information I have posted is from my own resources ie CD’s of Vic BDM. I cannot find a marriage for John and Eliza however a researcher is claiming they married at Ballarat in Feb 1869 and Annie was born Sep 1869. It would appear that her birth wasn’t registered until 1870 as noted on the Pioneer CD of Vic BDM.
Also John was born Plymouth c1842 and Eliza, Ireland c1848.
It’s possible their marriage wasn’t registered.
As these are your direct ancestors it would help your research to buy a couple of certificates. Online purchases are around $22.
Please don’t quote full messages in the replies. Makes it difficult to follow.

Thank you.
I have purchased several certificates.... sometimes you think you have the right link but unfortuately it doesn't pan out.
I appreciate your information, but also your advice.
Still finding my way around using this forum effectively and have noted your comments.
Again, thank you.

Hi Julie,
I am not sure I understand what you are saying above.
So you have certificates but what is the information on them.
In what way does "the link" not "pan out"?
No-one can help if you do not share the information on- for instance- the birth certificates of children of John and Eliza which will detail the parents' origins.
